Seeing Chen Qi staring at him blankly, Lin snapped, “What are you waiting for?

Hurry up and bring out the dishes.”

Before Chen Qi could explode in anger, Lin Fei handed her a plate of freshly cooked dishes.

“If your crappy cooking can’t pass the test with my parents, I’ll make sure you regret it!” Chen Qi shot Lin Fei a venomous look filled with threats, then headed out of the kitchen toward the living room with the dishes.

But, clearly, now was not the time to settle accounts with Lin Fei.

After all, Mr.

Lin, the high-ranking officer, was her only lifesaver at this moment.

If she lashed out and Lin Fei decided to quit, Chen Qi would have nowhere to cry.

Forcing herself to maintain the facade of the dutiful daughter, she continued towards the living room, where her parents were waiting.

Lin Fei had over and over again pushed Chen Qi’s psychological endurance to its limits.

Being someone who detests evil, despite her not overly broad-minded nature, Chen Qi certainly wasn’t going to let Lin Fei swagger around unchecked.

Although Chen Qi managed to restrain herself from erupting, that didn’t stop her from sentencing Lin Fei to death in her heart.

Er, to be precise, she assigned him a suspended death sentence, with his judgment to befall him after tonight’s fury.

Of course, these were just Chen Qi’s personal thoughts.

Meanwhile, Lin Fei, busy stir-frying in the kitchen, didn’t think he had committed any crime.

Imagine him, Mr.

Lin, coming over in the dead of night to participate in Chen Qi’s playacting, and even personally cooking dinner.

Luckily, neither of them knew what the other was thinking, otherwise, this boyfriend-girlfriend act would certainly not have gone on.

At the dining table, Chen’s mother raised her glass to Lin Fei with emotion.

“Lin, Auntie toasts to you.

I had given up hope of ever tasting a meal cooked by my daughter in this lifetime.

It’s you who have rekindled that hope.

Judging by this dinner alone, Auntie believes that you will definitely be a good husband in the future.”

“I also hope I can be a good husband, I just don’t know if Qi Qi will give me the chance,” Lin Fei toasted in return, not forgetting his role in the play.

If it weren’t for the clear knowledge that they were acting, and that just fifteen minutes ago, Lin Fei had insulted her repeatedly, even Chen Qi herself would have been moved by Lin Fei.

“She will, she must.

If she doesn’t give you a chance, I won’t acknowledge her as my daughter.

I have decided, you will be my son-in-law.” Chen’s mother, not aware of the real relationship between Chen Qi and Lin Fei, was clearly touched by Lin Fei.

More precisely, touched by the feast Lin Fei had prepared.

“Mom, what nonsense are you spouting?!”

Without much ado, her own mother was shoving her out the door; Chen Qi was immediately dissatisfied.

A hint of embarrassed annoyance flickered in her pretty eyes.

Outwardly displeased with her mother, Chen Qi didn’t forget to shoot Lin Fei a warning look.

“Alright, let’s eat,” said Chen Anbang, obviously much calmer than Chen’s mother and not particularly warmed to Lin Fei despite his outstanding culinary skills.

In fact, Lin Fei faintly sensed Chen Qi’s father was somewhat displeased with him cooking.

“I heard from Qi Qi that you work at Mu Group.

What exactly do you do there?” After a few drinks, Chen Anbang’s face relaxed, and he started to question Lin Fei.

“I was originally a General Affairs Assistant, but after the previous deputy director of the Security Department was dismissed, the company’s higher-ups learned I had served in the military and temporarily appointed me as the deputy director of the Security Department.”

When it came to work, Lin Fei naturally had nothing to hide.

Although Chen Qi’s father was already retired, he had been with the City Council, and if he really wanted to investigate Lin Fei, he would certainly have ways of doing so.

“Oh, you’ve served in the military before?” Chen Anbang seemed more interested in Lin Fei’s military background than his current job as deputy director of the Security Department.

“I was a conscript for a few years then had a rough time in the army, went abroad for some years, and came back when I got tired of it,” Lin Fei didn’t want to talk too much about his time in the military.

Because every time he mentioned it to others, it pained him.

“That’s a shame, the army is a great place to forge one’s character.” Having spent over a decade in the military, even though it had been a long time, Chen Anbang’s sentiment towards the military had not faded.

Lin Fei also had strong feelings for the military at one point.

If his brother-in-arms, Xiao Hu, hadn’t died, and had been posthumously acknowledged as a hero after his death, perhaps that sentiment might have persisted.

Unfortunately, there are not so many ‘ifs’ in this world.

Due to Chen’s mother’s intervention, Lin Fei and Chen Anbang did not drink too much, and by the end of the meal, Lin Fei had managed to win the approval of Chen’s mother.

On Chen Anbang’s side, however, there was no significant breakthrough.

“Walk with me for a bit,” Chen Anbang suggested after dinner, not giving Lin Fei any extra chances, and leading the way downstairs.

“It’s rare to find young people who can cook these days.

And there are even fewer like you who can make a good table of dishes,” Chen Anbang looked up at the sky in the small garden below the retirement apartment where Chen Qi’s parents lived.

“However, what I hope for my daughter is a man who can protect her, be her strong supporter, and not just a chef who can cook well!”

The last two words were aimed at Lin Fei, and the intention behind them was obvious.

“As a detective, she could face all sorts of dangers at any time.

Since you’ve once saved her, I believe you’re aware of that.

I’m getting old and can protect her only briefly, not for a lifetime.

So, I want her future partner to be someone who can step up and protect her when she’s in danger, not just a chef who only knows how to cook!”

That was the last straw; Lin Fei couldn’t stand it anymore.

He, Mr.

Lin, so what if he had some cooking skills?

To Chen Anbang, these did not form any positive traits but were instead looked down upon.

“I heard from Qi Qi that uncle, you were once a prominent figure in the military competitions in the army district?”

Chen Anbang frowned slightly, confused by Lin Fei’s sudden question, yet it didn’t prevent a touch of nostalgia and pride from flashing in his eyes.

“That’s all from my youth, what’s that got to do with anything now?”

Lin Fei flashed a toothy smile.

“Nothing much, I just wanted to seek some advice from uncle.”
