Chapter 1412: Chapter 1412: Dare Not

"Silence! I will deliver a just verdict on this case."

The County Magistrate once again struck the gavel.

Su Yunjin and Wan Ruyan both closed their mouths.

Today, the Magistrate had called Su Yunjin and Gu Ya to court after finding sufficient evidence.

Now it was time to present the physical evidence.

"Bring forth the physical evidence," ordered the Magistrate. The evidence included half a packet of abortion drug, the oil paper that Mrs. An used to wrap the drug, and the remaining powder on the paper.

To be more cautious, Su Yunjin had also saved and brought the pork bone soup that Mrs. An had cooked with the abortion drug. It was currently winter.

Although it was not the coldest part of winter, the soup preserved in ice could still be kept fresh for a few days without spoiling. The soup remained unchanged, even in taste.

"My lord, I also have a piece of evidence."

Su Yunjin spoke.

The County Magistrate glanced at Su Yunjin and calmly ordered, "Present it."

Gu Ya was holding the soup pot.

As soon as the Magistrate finished speaking, Gu Ya walked over and handed the pot to the clerk, who respectfully took it to the Magistrate.

Wan Ruyan saw the evidence on the court and her previously arrogant face instantly fell. What to do? What if the Magistrate finds out she was the one who drugged the potion? She would be ruined.

Wan Ruyan felt utterly hopeless.

The County Magistrate spoke unhurriedly.

"Miss Wan, this half packet of abortion drug was found on you. Tell me, where is the other half of the packet?" Wan Ruyan had swapped half a packet to Su Yunjin’s mother-in-law, Mrs. An, and kept the remaining half for herself.

How could Wan Ruyan dare tell the truth?

Trembling in panic, Wan Ruyan couldn’t find a suitable excuse. While she remained silent, Gu Ya spoke, "My lord, the half packet left was indeed swapped with my wife. The packet that my wife almost consumed is identical to the one seized from Miss Wan."

"My lord, the abortion drugs sold in the town are all the same. You cannot convict me based solely on their accusations," Wan Ruyan shouted in protest.

The spectators outside the court also murmured among themselves, most of them feeling that Wan Ruyan had a point; indeed, one couldn’t simply pin the crime on her based on half a packet of identical abortion drug.

The County Magistrate looked towards the Pharmacy Shopkeeper from Baoji Hall, who slowly began to speak, "My lord, when Miss Wan came to me, she specifically asked for a stronger abortion drug and even paid extra. The drug I prepared for Miss Wan differed from the usual due to its strength. I added extra crab powder, which I personally made and is not found elsewhere, and I can recognize it by smell alone."

Hearing this, Wan Ruyan collapsed to the ground in fright.

The County Magistrate instructed the Pharmacy Shopkeeper to smell the evidence.

The shopkeeper first smelled the drug found on Wan Ruyan, then the residue that Su Yunjin had collected.

After smelling both samples,

the shopkeeper respectfully reported back,

"My lord, I have thoroughly examined it. The half packet on Miss Wan and the half packet from Madam Su were indeed personally prepared by me."
