Chapter 1242: Chapter 1056, Return to the Capital (Two-in-One Mega Chapter)
Because he was traveling with three children, Xiao Yeyang did not hurry on their journey. Whenever they encountered lively places, Daohua would have the three children get off the carriage to experience the local customs.
After a shaky ride, it wasn’t until mid-March that Xiao Yeyang and his group entered the Capital Boundary.
"Mom, look quick, are we about to arrive in Beijing?"
Daozi leaned on the carriage window, excitedly pointing at the distant and imposing city walls.
Daohua smiled and said, "Yes, we’re about to arrive in Beijing." Then she pulled Daozi back to a seated position and let down the carriage curtains.
"Once we enter the city, we can’t be as wild as we were on the road."
Daozi nodded and sat up straight, "Mom, I know. Dad has already told me. He said Beijing is under the Emperor’s feet, with numerous rules. Everything we do represents our Prince Residence; we must not lose face."
Seeing Daozi so sensible, Daohua felt very relieved.
Once close to Beijing, Xiao Yeyang chose to ride a horse instead of sitting in the carriage.
Soon, the procession arrived at the city gates.
Without needing to check, the soldiers guarding the gate immediately went up to greet Xiao Yeyang when they saw him. It only took a moment before the convoy was allowed to enter the city gates without obstruction.
"Mom, Beijing is so lively!"
"Even more than our Xiliang."
Listening to the hustle and bustle outside the carriage, Daozi was able to bear it, but the twins could not. To soothe the little ones, Daohua could only lift the carriage curtain slightly.
Watching the three small faces curiously observing the street scene outside, Daohua said with a smile, "Once your father has taken care of all his business, he’ll take you out to play."
After a while, the Prince Residence arrived.
...
"Prince, Prince!"
Huai En rushed into the study in a fluster.
The Prince, who was arranging portraits of his grandchildren, looked up displeased, "Are you being chased by a dog, to be in such a panic!"
Huai En was breathing rapidly, "Prince, the Princess Consort has returned with the Little Prince and the others."
On hearing this, the Prince was momentarily stunned, then quickly put down the portrait in his hand and hurried out of the study.
Upon leaving the courtyard, the Prince realized he might have overreacted, as it seemed he was too eager to see Yeyang’s family. After some thought, he deliberately slowed his pace.
Even so, the Prince still arrived at the main gate almost on the heels of the Imperial Concubine Ji and the others.
"Prince!"
Seeing the hurriedly arriving Prince, Imperial Concubine Ji and the others felt somewhat slighted; surely, the most cherished ones by the Prince were still his legitimate children and grandchildren.
The salute from Daohua and the others took some time, and they were just about to enter the Residence.
Originally, the Prince had wanted to retain some dignity, as a father dignified; he couldn’t possibly go and welcome his son and daughter-in-law.
However, when a small pink figure huffed and puffed trying to climb over the nearly foot-high threshold of the Prince Residence with a pink suitcase, the Prince’s defenses were breached, and he rushed to the little bundle of joy.
"You must be my granddaughter, right?"
Daomang, a little girl with one leg crossed over the threshold, looked at the suddenly appearing, pleasing smiling face, blinked her large round eyes twice, and then a radiant smile spread over her face: "Grandfather, are you my grandfather?"
Although he was mentally prepared, the Prince’s still smooth face still broke into a broad smile upon the affirmative answer, "Yes, yes, yes, I am your grandfather. You’re Daomang, aren’t you?"
Daomang nodded her head vigorously like a pecking chicken, put down her carry-on suitcase, and stretched out her arms towards the Prince.
Seeing this, the Prince immediately joyfully lifted the little girl into his arms.
Daomang wrapped her arms around the Prince’s neck, smiling sweetly: "Grandfather, I missed you so much!" Her sweet, soft voice drew out long and tenderly.
Hearing her daughter’s affectionate voice, Daohua couldn’t help twitching at the corners of her mouth. Just listening to that tone, one who didn’t know better might think the little girl had deep affection for her grandfather.
Who knew, the two were meeting for the first time.
Watching his granddaughter being so close to him, the Prince felt as though he had drunk honey, his heart sweet as he mimicked Daomang’s tone, "Grandfather missed you too."
A child’s coyness is cute and endearing, but when a middle-aged man does it... it becomes a bit... cheesy.
Xiao Yeyang, trailing behind, couldn’t bear such a display from the Prince and forcefully made his presence known, interrupting the bonding moment between the grandfather and granddaughter.
"Father!"
Following behind, Daohua also bowed respectfully to the Prince.
The Prince nodded with a smile at the two of them.
After her parents had made their salute, Daozi then led his brother to the Prince, saluting: "Grandson pays respects to Grandfather!"
