Chapter 2305: Chapter 2305: It’s Really Tragic
"He’s an alchemist, so what? Just because there’s a dead man lying on the roadside, does she really have to get involved?"
"I’d advise you to mind your own business. Sky City hasn’t been peaceful lately—murders like this have already occurred several times."
"Several times?"
Lin Caisang raised an eyebrow upon hearing his words.
"What’s going on? Somebody’s committing murders in Sky City, and the City Lord’s Mansion isn’t doing anything about it?"
She asked.
"Oh, they’re handling it—why wouldn’t they?"
The man spoke and let out a sigh simultaneously.
"The City Lord’s Mansion is indeed trying to deal with it, but there are times when even they can’t manage it all. Every one of the victims has been an alchemist, and they’re outsiders without any proof of identity. How’s the City Lord’s Mansion supposed to investigate under those circumstances?"
"Alchemists? Weren’t they invited by the City Lord’s Mansion? How could they end up murdered on the streets? That’s way too bizarre!" Lin Caisang asked again.
Broad daylight, the open sky—how could someone be killed just like that?
She turned her head to glance at the man lying on the ground. He was clutching his throat, blood gushing endlessly from his mouth. Even between his fingers, the bright red liquid was streaming outward.
It was obvious—a clean, swift slash had severed his throat.
Which meant, just moments ago, while he was walking on the street, the killer had crossed paths with him, pulled out a blade or some sharp object, and struck decisively at his neck, killing him on the spot.
If this wasn’t murder committed brazenly in broad daylight, then what was?
"Precisely because they’re alchemists, it’s not strange at all," the man added.
"Everyone knows the City Lord’s Mansion is recruiting people for the expedition to the Vast Forest, including alchemists. But they’re recruiting far more pharmacists than alchemists.
Yet, there has been a sudden influx of alchemists into Sky City, outnumbering the pharmacists severalfold. With too many contenders and too few slots, some people are bound to think—well, wouldn’t killing off a few competitors improve their chances of going to the Vast Forest?"
Thus, according to popular speculation, these street murders are inextricably linked to the expedition to the Vast Forest.
But of course, these are just speculations. No one dares to speak openly about it. After all, the expedition to the Vast Forest is for seeking cures for the City Lord’s wife and their unborn Junior City Lord.
Who would boldly claim that these deaths are due to the City Lord’s wife’s recruitment notice for pharmacists and alchemists?
"So that’s the case. I see now," Lin Caisang nodded slightly.
"That’s why, madam, you can’t afford to be merciful and meddle in this matter. If someone sees you, you might very well end up the next target," the man continued.
His words weren’t without reason. After all, just as plenty of alchemists had swarmed into Sky City in recent days, numerous pharmacists had also arrived in droves. There would surely be more coming in subsequent days.
And the number of pharmacists chosen for the Vast Forest expedition would undoubtedly be far fewer than those arriving in Sky City.
The same problem of too many contenders and too few slots existed for the pharmacists as well. If alchemists were killing one another, then wouldn’t the same logic apply to pharmacists?
"What a tragedy indeed."
The man shook his head and sighed deeply.
Lin Caisang noticed that within the crowd of onlookers, many others were sighing too—a young life, gone in an instant.
Yet, no one stepped forward to stop it or even save the man.
But Lin Caisang knew that saving him wouldn’t matter. He was beyond saving. Not only had his major artery been severed, but he had also been poisoned—a toxin that made healing the wound nearly impossible.
