Chapter 2143: Chapter 2143: It’s Not a Capital Offense

Not long after, several deafening explosions emanated from the imperial tomb, shaking the entire mountain range a few times.

The Tomb Guards tasked with safeguarding the tomb swiftly rallied from all directions, completely encircling the mountain range in an attempt to locate the source of the thunderous noise.

"Report!"

A Tomb Guard hurried over, approaching a figure clad in armor identified as the general.

"General, the northern vein of the Emperor of Wei’s tomb has been blasted open, and the Western Underground Palace has many footprints left behind. Countless treasures are scattered outside the Western Underground Palace."

"What?!"

Upon hearing this, the one known as the general was utterly devastated.

He was the general charged with the tomb’s protection, the one who had entrusted his entire fortune and life to the safety of this place.

And now, not only had the tomb been bombed, but the treasures most cherished by the imperial family were all cast aside on the ground?

Who on earth would do such a thing? Were they insane?

To scatter the treasures all over the ground... If it were him, he would have certainly taken all those treasures and...

"No, that’s not right."

The general’s train of thoughts halted abruptly, and he stared at his subordinate with a grim expression.

"What treasures are those?"

Before the subordinate could even respond, the general flung his robe behind him and hastened towards the Western Underground Palace.

Shortly thereafter, the Tomb Guards watched their general sitting amidst those treasures, his entire being shrouded in a dense aura of death.

"How could this happen, how could it be?"

He murmured incessantly, wishing he could flay the thief who had plundered the imperial tomb’s treasures a thousand times over.

This wasn’t simply a case of the treasures from the Western Underground Palace being carelessly scattered - clearly, it was because they had taken too many treasures and, fearing discovery by the tomb’s guards, discarded those they deemed unimportant.

If his guess was correct, the thief had absconded with even more valuable and expensive items from the tomb.

"General, what’s wrong?"

A Tomb Guard who had not yet grasped the situation saw their commander looking so utterly forlorn and asked.

It was merely a scattering of some treasures, after all, they weren’t lost, and though parts of the imperial tomb were damaged, it wasn’t severe. Even if the Emperor of Wei assigned blame, it shouldn’t warrant death, should it?

"General, if we report to the Emperor truthfully, considering your many years of hard work and distinguished service, he won’t impose a severe punishment."

"Shut up!"

The general cursed in response to these words.

How could there not be a severe punishment? It would be letting him off lightly if only he died.

Perhaps it might even lead to the execution of his entire family!

Was the Emperor not known for being ruthlessly decisive? Was he unaware?

How many years had he served the Emperor, from childhood following the current Emperor of Wei, his trust in him had always been his proudest achievement.

Otherwise, the Emperor would never have assigned him to guard the imperial tomb – a place every Emperor of the Ziyan Kingdom deemed of utmost importance.

Who could have imagined that it was precisely because of the Emperor’s trust in him that he would meet his downfall within this very tomb?

If the thief had simply stolen the items, that would have been the end of it. After all, not the generals guarding it were allowed inside the Western Underground Palace; no one would have known the treasures were stolen.

But that despicable thief also left some outside the underground palace and, what’s worse, even set explosives throughout the tomb.
