Chapter 2010: Chapter 2010: Is This a Human Bone?!
"Sang’er, you’ll have to take on extra work tonight and do a few more portraits of your father. Tomorrow I’ll have Zhe Jue and the others go out and inquire. Just relying on Auntie Chang simply won’t do."
"Alright."
Lin Caisang naturally hadn’t placed all her hopes on Granny Chang.
"Wait a moment before you go out, and tell Zhe Jue and the others to be more vigilant tonight. I always feel that there’s something odd about this place, but can’t quite put my finger on what it is.
It’s better to be cautious."
"I’ll go right now."
Sui Zimo responded and turned to leave the room.
...
In the kitchen, Shijian and the book attendant were busy, working alongside Granny Chang—washing vegetables, chopping meat, and tending to the fire. They took care of everything.
Under the stove, the book attendant had already lit the fire, added a few pieces of firewood into the stove, and then stared at the slowly strengthening flames.
However, as the light in front of her grew brighter, she noticed a long bone, already somewhat charred, that was amongst the fire.
Even if she didn’t cook often, she knew that nobody used bones for fuel, right?
Thus, seizing the moment when Granny Chang said that she was going out to catch a fish from the water tank to make braised fish for them, the book attendant quickly used tongs to remove the bone and wrapped it in her own handkerchief, tucking it inside her chest.
Right after she finished doing this, Granny Chang entered, holding a fish.
"Ah, I forgot to tidy up the master’s room."
The book attendant stood up from the small stool, pretending as if she had just remembered that she needed to do something for the master, and her face went a bit pale.
"Book attendant..."
Shijian, hearing her words, turned her head to look at her.
She wanted to ask when had their lord and lady ever needed them to do these menial tasks? The lady had always done them herself.
However, when she looked at the book attendant, she didn’t voice any of her doubts, instead telling herself that there must be a reason for her actions.
"I’ll help Auntie Chang here, you go ahead."
"Okay."
The book attendant agreed, then took a glance at Granny Chang.
"Shijian, I’ll ask Jiang Zuo and the others to come in to help you."
With that, she left, and soon really she brought Jiang Zuo and Jiang Li into the kitchen, while she went to her own lord and lady’s room.
"What is it?"
Sui Zimo looked at her, asking.
"Lord, I found this under the kitchen stove. I don’t know what animal this bone belongs to and thought to bring it to the lady to take a look."
The book attendant took out the handkerchief-wrapped bone from her chest and held it up in front of her own lord.
"A bone?"
Lin Caisang, hearing her words, looked at the handkerchief in her hands.
Finding a bone under the stove shouldn’t be anything strange, right? In the past, in the village, those greedy young wives would also secretly eat some meat by the stove, and naturally, the bones would be tossed aside.
Nonetheless, she took the handkerchief from the book attendant’s hand and unfolded it.
Suddenly, her pupils contracted sharply as she looked at the charred bone inside the handkerchief.
"You say this was found where, under the stove?"
She raised her head to look at the book attendant, pressing for an answer.
"Replying to the lady, it was found in the fireplace," the book attendant replied.
"What’s wrong?"
Sui Zimo saw his wife’s complexion was off and leaned in to take a look. The next moment, his expression darkened.
"This is a human bone?!"
