Chapter 1417: Chapter 1417: Not Killed by You?
"Although I didn’t cremate Old Master Chen’s body, it was I who collected his ashes," she said.
"Hmm?"
Lin Caisang raised her eyebrows, glanced at Sui Zimo beside her, and then looked towards Ling’er.
"Here’s what happened: one night, quite late, when everyone in the residence had already gone to bed—you might also know that members of the Ghost Clan often stay awake at night, as do I—I went out to look for something to eat and just happened to run into Grand Old Master Chen returning alone from outside, and he was covered in the stench of death."
Since Grand Old Master Chen was of the Ghost Clan, I paid extra attention to him, and with Old Master Chen’s inexplicable death, I was even more puzzled, so I went to Old Master Chen’s grave to check...
Upon inspection, I was shocked to find that Old Master Chen’s coffin had been opened, the body gone, and in a clearing in the woods, I found a pile of ashes that had already been burned. I used my ghostly power to examine it and discovered it was human ashes."
"That was Old Master Chen’s ashes!" Lin Caisang said with utmost certainty.
"Yes."
Ling’er nodded her head.
In that place, under those circumstances, aside from Old Master Chen’s ashes, there were no other corpses, right?
"I thought, since Old Master Chen was after all Madam Chen’s husband, it wouldn’t be right for his body to be exposed to the wilderness, so I collected his ashes, put them in a pot, and placed them back inside the coffin," she explained.
Upon hearing this, Lin Caisang pursed her lips.
"Old Master Chen, it wasn’t you who killed him?" Sui Zimo stared at her and asked.
"How could that be?"
Upon hearing his words, Ling’er let out a strange cry.
"I’m still investigating the peculiar aspects of Old Master Chen’s death; how could I kill him at this point?" she exclaimed.
"Old Master Chen’s peculiar aspects?" Lin Caisang picked up on these words.
"Yes."
Having come this far in the conversation, Ling’er naturally did not deny it.
"I noticed that whenever Old Master Chen lost his temper and hit Madam Chen, there was always a unique aura about him that I couldn’t quite understand."
"So you’re saying that Old Master Chen really wasn’t killed by you." Lin Caisang stated.
"Of course not."
Ling’er shook her head; there was no way she could have killed Old Master Chen.
"With the Madam... in this state, and Old Master Chen being the closest family to her two children, how could I possibly harm the Madam’s two children? With Old Master Chen around, the children of Madam Chen could still lead a good life in the Chen Residence, right?
Despite Old Master Chen’s constant berating and beating of Madam Chen, he still cared deeply for the two children," she said.
"Is it possible that when Old Master Chen was hitting Madam Chen, the person residing in his body wasn’t actually him?" Lin Caisang voiced her suspicion.
Upon hearing this, not just Ling’er, but even Madam Chen fixed her gaze directly on Lin Caisang.
"Perhaps it is so," Sui Zimo agreed with Lin Caisang’s words.
It might just be the best explanation; from what he had gathered, Old Master Chen wasn’t known to be easily angered or violent, and there had never been incidents of him hitting anyone in the past.
How could he have laid hands on his own wife just because Grand Old Madam Chen and Old Madam pressured him? Especially when this wife had borne him two sons!
"Madam Chen, what do you think?"
He turned to Madam Chen, seeking her opinion.
"I..."
Madam Chen opened her mouth, bowed her head, and carefully recalled the times she had spent with her late husband.
