Chapter 1033: Chapter 1033: Don’t yell, it’s me!
The issue is that she is the wife of the Zhou family, and her daughter is marrying into such a place; how will she ever hold her head up high in public in the future?
"So what do you want instead? Let the whole county know that our Zhou family has such an embarrassing incident, that we can’t even control our own daughter, and let her do such a disgraceful thing?"
Elder Mr. Zhou glared at her and retorted.
"This..."
Madam Zhou paused mid-sentence.
"Enough, my wife, stop being stubborn with your father. It’s already good enough that Yan’er can find a family to marry into; just go and choose a marriage arrangement for her," Old Master Zhou sighed deeply.
In the end, they decided to give up on their disappointing daughter. It was better than losing all their face, right?
"But..."
"No buts."
Seeing his wife still trying to speak, Old Master Zhou interrupted her again.
"Just tell the outside world that Yan’er is married off to another county. As long as no one knows the truth, and since Yan’er is a young girl, in a few months, no one will remember her," he said.
"I’m worried that Yan’er might make a fuss. What if she runs away?" Madam Zhou expressed her concern.
If her daughter knew she was being married off to such a poor and remote place, wouldn’t she create a scene?
Who would willingly spend their whole life trapped in a ravine, being ordered around by the in-laws, never able to make a name for themselves? Would she be willing?
"Dare she run away? If she dares, watch me break her legs!" Old Master Zhou snorted coldly and said.
"After all, one can still get married with broken legs. You don’t need legs to bear children; just keep the belly intact!"
"Hiss!"
Outside the window, in a corner of the wall, the maidservant hiding and eavesdropping couldn’t help but gasp in shock.
Fortunately, she covered her mouth in time, preventing a scream from coming out, or else she would have certainly been discovered.
"I can’t let this happen; this family is too wicked. I must tell the mistress," she thought to herself.
She was Zhou Yan’s personal maidservant, and it was only by following Zhou Yan closely that she, among all the maidservants, could walk with her head held high in the Zhou family.
She was indeed very grateful to her mistress, Zhou Yan.
Struggling, she crawled up from the corner, not caring about the grievous wounds on her back, and after a moment of thought, she ran towards Zhou Yan’s room.
...
Shortly after, the night grew heavy.
Zhou Yan had finished both steamed buns in the ancestral hall and her mouth was very dry, but she still gritted her teeth and endured.
Outside, the maidservant kept looking back as she ran towards the ancestral hall, and because she was in such a hurry, she almost stumbled over something and nearly fell.
Luckily, she was steadied by a hand that appeared out of nowhere.
"Ah... Mmm!"
Startled, she screamed, but another hand quickly covered her mouth.
"Chunxing, don’t shout; it’s me!" The man hurriedly spoke.
"Brother Xilong, it’s you! You scared me to death," Chunxing exhaled deeply upon seeing him.
"What’s going on? Why do you have a bundle? Are you leaving?"
Xilong examined Chunxing from head to toe, noticing that she was holding a bundle tightly, and asked.
"It’s not me who’s leaving; it’s the mistress. I must hurry and get the mistress out of here, or she won’t survive," Chunxing swallowed hard and spoke to Xilong.
Upon hearing this, Xilong immediately pulled Chunxing into a corner.
"What’s going on? Speak clearly, what happened to the mistress?"
