With that thought, he stood up, peeked through the crack in the door to make sure that the courtyard was empty, then turned back and went to a corner of the room. He flipped over a broken barrel there, then dug out a wooden plank from beneath it.

With a ’clatter,’ several pieces of broken silver fell into his palm.

These were the coins he had earned over the years by selling straw mats and picking goji berries to sell in town. He had given half to Mom and Dad and secretly stashed the other half away.
