Chapter 73: [Volume 1] Chapter 73- Committing murder.

After all, they and Esme had been married for two months now, and only *now* did they suddenly care about asking him why he got married. "Just wow," he thought, frustrated by their timing.

"It was our mother’s decision, and we’ve done nothing wrong. If I recall correctly, many of the ones you’ve ’approved’ either fled or met mysterious ends. So, forgive me if we made you think your blessing means so little to us."

For a brief moment, guilt flickered across the elders’ faces, but it was quickly replaced by defiance.

One elder spoke up again, his voice dripping with contempt. "I don’t care about what you’ve done in the past. But how could you let that woman—someone from God knows where—take control of the Aron Group? Do you even know what she’s been doing with the company?"

Ray’s expression hardened as he answered, his tone colder than before. "First of all, she’s not an outsider. She’s my wife. She’s *our* wife. And second, I know exactly what she’s been doing. I gave her power of attorney myself. And we didn’t see anything wrong with the way she’s handling our business."

The elders erupted in disbelief, one of them shouting, "You’re all useless! You let that idiotic woman think she can control everything, and look at you! One’s a cripple, another only knows how to shout like a woman in court, and the last one is stuck in a lab, wasting his time on worthless experiments!"

Hearing the elder’s words hit like a blow to the gut. The one thing the brothers could never tolerate was anyone insulting their mother. She had been a remarkable woman, supporting them even when they were mers. So when someone spoke ill of her, they lost their composure completely. Their expressions turned cold, a clear warning that the line had been crossed.

"Uncle, that’s enough. I think it’s enough," Harry said, his voice steady but filled with anger. The elder, still trying to speak, felt a lump form in his throat as he caught a glimpse of Ray’s fierce gaze.

At that moment, another elder, feeling his authority slipping away, shouted, "What is this? Is this how your mother raised you? Is this what she taught you? You’re a disgrace to her name! You useless bums—after two months of marriage, you still can’t get her pregnant and dare to speak to your elders like this?"

His words hung heavy in the air, igniting a fire in the brothers that they struggled to contain.

"This is what happens when your father was a nobody—rich but without brains. Your mother was foolish to marry a mer like him, and look at you now, following in his footsteps. You’re just as worthless," the elder sneered.

At the mention of their father, one brother lowered his head, the weight of the words settling heavily on them. Their anger, once boiling, felt like it was ready to fade. Their father had been an ordinary man, a second-generation rich kid, but weak in body and spirit. All his inheritance had gone to his sister, leaving him with nothing. People often called him a fool with a golden spoon—rich but unable to command any authority.

Their mother had loved their father deeply, caring for him without hesitation, even as his health failed. She had devoted herself to him, and his early death had left a void that still stung. Now, hearing insults thrown at their family made it all the harder to bear.

"At least they’re much better than you!" a voice rang out, louder than necessary, causing everyone to stop and turn. The brothers’ eyes lit up with recognition and relief when they saw Esme coming down the stairs. The elders, however, were shocked—according to their information, she was supposed to be gone for three to four days. How could she be back so soon? It hadn’t even been three hours.

As Esme descended, her expression was icy, her clothes slightly disheveled. She walked directly to the elders, and in a moment of unexpected fury, she grabbed a bass. Instead of striking the glass table like last time, she swung it hard against the wooden sofa arm, splintering it into pieces. Holding a large chunk of wood, she approached the elders, her anger palpable.

Then, without hesitation, she climbed onto the newly brought glass table, glaring down at them with the bass piece in hand. "What’s going on? Care to say that again?" she demanded, her expression fierce. In that moment, the elders felt as if they were facing a madwoman, the air thick with tension and defiance.

The elders began to shudder, leaning back in fear as Esme brandished the warped, broken piece of wood near one of their necks. "What? What happened? Say more," she demanded, her voice steady, sending chills down their spines. The elders exchanged terrified glances, one of them thinking, *Is she crazy? She’s going to murder him!*

Esme met his gaze with a chilling smile. "Of course I am," she replied, making their fear intensify. Panic surged through them as they realized she was openly admitting to the act. "It’s illegal! You’ll go to prison! You’ll be sentenced!" they stammered, desperate to dissuade her.

Esme just smiled wider. "No, I’m not going to prison. Don’t worry." She stood up and casually rubbed her neck, then turned to one of the servants. With a nod, the gates and windows were closed, and the servants retreated to their rooms. Soon, the hall was utterly silent, devoid of any witnesses.

The elders, now pale, watched in horror. "What are you doing?" one managed to croak.

"Nothing. Just cleaning the crime scene," Esme replied, her tone almost playful.

"Crime scene?" they gasped, fear overtaking them.

"Yeah, a crime scene. If I commit murder here and any of you run out to call the police, then I might end up in prison. But if I kill you and bury you in my backyard, without any witnesses, who’s going to arrest me? Hmm."

The room fell into a suffocating silence, the reality of her words sinking in.
