The Handsome CEO Is My Husband -
Chapter 66
Chapter 66: Chapter 66
First Nathan and now Liam were driving Adeline to lose her mind. Neither of them realised the danger that came from provoking her father. What they needed to do to please him was quite simple yet both were against it.
It infuriated Adeline even more to have Veronica sitting at the table watching this play out. Veronica was one of the reasons Liam was in a bad spot with his grandfather.
"I have sent you to good school after good school and it seems my money was wasted since you are not smart enough to realise you’re going to get yourself killed. And all for what? For her? It’s not worth it," said Adeline.
Recently, Adeline wondered if her father was behind what happened to Veronica. He had been growing impatient with waiting for her to get rid of Veronica. The only thing that stopped her from thinking it was him was because the plan failed.
Veronica wouldn’t be sitting around enjoying dinner if it was Adeline’s father behind this.
Adeline wanted to tell Liam that she didn’t want to lose him over his misbehaving but couldn’t. "I have raised you to stand by your family."
Veronica thought this was funny since Liam was standing by his wife. ’Well, she doesn’t consider me family.’
Veronica enjoyed watching Adeline and Liam speak as it allowed her to better understand his relationship with his family. Strangely, it seemed that Adeline was either very afraid of her brother or father.
If she was, why as Liam’s mother would she want to throw Liam into their arms instead of trying to free herself so they wouldn’t be used?
Veronica felt someone’s burning gaze on her and when she looked away from Liam, she found that it was Nathan staring at her. She didn’t believe that they once got along. He stared at her like there was something he wanted her to say.
"You look well, Veronica. I figured you were sick which is why you left my charity event early. I heard a little funny story about you," Nathan said, no longer interested in what Adeline and Liam spoke about since there was something more important to uncover. "I hear you don’t have your memories."
Liam stood up as his parents made him lose the last of his patience. "I said to leave us alone. It would be good news to see the two of you kicked out of a restaurant. Even better if you’re thrown out by your son. I don’t have the patience to deal with you two."
Liam showed up to family events if it was important but that was about it. He asked not to be approached but they still kept coming like this.
Nathan came between Liam and Adeline. "Now son, don’t act up. Be careful how you speak to the people who gave you everything you have. I just might take it back."
"Try to," Liam challenged his father. "I want to see you try. Humour me."
Nathan slowly started to become bothered by Liam’s attitude. He put Liam in the position he had now. "Let’s sit and have dinner like a normal family for once. We’re starting to grab a lot of attention and this getting to the press isn’t good for any of us."
Liam refused to sit with his family.
Nathan sighed since Liam wouldn’t budge. "Fine. Enjoy your dinner. I wanted to eat alone with your mother anyway. I’ll see you very soon, Veronica."
Adeline didn’t want to move until Liam promised to visit her father but the mention of gaining attention convinced her to drop it for now.
Liam was being a fool right now in Adeline’s opinion. The longer Liam waited the more he was welcoming someone to attack him to get him to fall in line and seeing what happened to Veronica, the attacks must have started.
Adeline walked away from the table first leaving Nathan behind to do the goodbyes.
Nathan reached to touch Liam’s shoulder but stopped himself when he saw the look Liam gave him. He didn’t doubt that if Liam could bite his hand off, he would.
Veronica watched as Nathan hurried to follow his wife. "I don’t want to meet with your father any day of the week. Someone from my family told him about the memory loss."
Liam sat back down. "My mother met with Beth and your mother. I’m tracking all of them."
"So, your family is filled with stalkers," said Veronica. "Your mother is very afraid of her father. I’m starting to question again why you aren’t afraid."
"He can be intimidating but I wasn’t raised by him like she was to be so afraid of him. He gets loud, threatens you, and finds some way to get you locked up though he’s the one running around killing people. I would be in more danger if I got involved in his plans than avoid him," Liam said.
Veronica worried for Liam’s sake and her own. His grandfather wasn’t sounding like an easy man to deal with. "I think you need to be a little bit more worried. You have money but I don’t know if it can help you put up a good fight against someone like that. What if he gets angry and tries to do something to you or me?"
"He has always tried something on us. If there’s anyone who hates our marriage more than my mother it’s my grandfather. Like his children, he had his grandchildren’s life mapped out to fit what he wanted. There’s danger in going to him and staying away. Staying away gives me more peace," Liam explained.
From gathering information on his family to one day expose them if needed, he knew just how much he could get his hands dirty if he were to join his grandfather.
"I won’t be the same man you once loved if I join him and if I were to join him to protect you, he would still try to get rid of you as you do not fit his plans. Trust me that I will protect us this time around. I can’t go through this again," Liam said, his plans different from before after almost losing Veronica.
He had to stoop to the level of the people around him or even lower to protect her.
"I do trust you. What would it take for all of them to give up?" Veronica wondered as they weren’t listening to Liam saying no. "I’m honestly scared but not enough to leave you to protect myself. I’m starting to wish I could hit a few of them over the head so we could all have memory loss,’ she joked.
