Chapter 58: Chapter 58

Veronica once guessed that she had lost the phone in the water where she fell which was why Liam was unable to find it but now, she could confirm that someone did have it and turned it on at least once.

"I knew you wouldn’t forgive me right away but I will do anything to prove how sorry I am. Throwing you under the bus wasn’t worth it since Adeline is still on me. She’s never satisfied and I am just tired of it," said Julia.

From the beginning, Julia knew she could never please Adeline but still tried to appear perfect. She was lucky to have Liam since he wasn’t like the rest of the family to judge every little move she made.

"I understand but I am a little tired right now. Liam and I just got home. I will think about it and reach out to you," Veronica said, needing to see for herself one day if the messages did show they were read.

Julia wanted to go inside to keep talking but settled for Veronica wanting to reach out to her later on. "Okay. I can wait for you. I’m sorry about running through your gates to get to you. I was desperate to speak to you. I know Liam must be pissed."

’He is," Veronica replied, looking back to where Liam took the car. "Don’t do that again. We have all this attention on us now and the last thing we need is for anyone to record you running through our gates. I don’t want to be blamed for you acting like that."

"Right," Julia said, only now thinking of how this could be flipped for Veronica to be blamed. ’I wasn’t thinking. If anyone finds out about this, I will say that it is all my fault. Well, I won’t keep you long."

It was hard to stand here and not be invited inside but it was the consequence of betraying two people who genuinely cared about her.

Julia was upset with Adeline as much as she was upset with herself. Adeline was too hard on everyone, backing them into a corner to threaten them to fix the flaws she saw so the family looked perfect. Julia was certain that Adeline nitpicked everything about the pets in the family.

Julia turned around to leave Veronica.

"Julia," Veronica called before Julia could get too far out the gates. "I lost my old phone so if that number sends you anything, please tell Liam.

Julia noticed how Veronica wanted her to reach out to Liam instead of giving the new number Veronica would have now. She just smiled and nodded her head, accepting to do what Veronica wanted to get back their old friendship,

"I can also spy on Adeline-"

"I don’t want to know what Adeline is doing. I don’t want to think or see her. I don’t mind if you tell her this," said Veronica.

Julia took Veronica’s response as a low blow. It came off as Veronica anticipated that she would run and tell Adeline what she was up to. "You know, I think if given the chance you could speak to Adeline about something other than her wanting you to divorce Liam, you would have used my secrets."

"Don’t put that on me. I never did it and I don’t plan on using you to get close to Adeline. I don’t ever want to get close to her. The truth is that you stabbed in the back to get her off you. Accept that you screwed up and not try to say that I would do the same," Veronica replied, starting to be annoyed with Julia.

Julia shouldn’t have come here thinking everything would be fixed with an apology and Veronica wouldn’t think it was likely for Julia to use her again.

"I just. I have to go," Julia said, continuing to head out the gate before she made things worse. She made a stupid comment. Veronica knew many of her secrets that could get her in trouble with a lot of her relatives but none of those secrets came out.

"These people are all strange," Veronica muttered.

There didn’t seem to be one sane person around her or Liam and it started to make her question if they were both also insane and failed to notice it.

Veronica jumped when the gates started to close again though she didn’t have the remote and turned around to see that Liam was waiting for her. She had something important to tell him so she couldn’t wait around to see that Julia left.

Liam thought something was wrong with the way she practically ran to him. "What did she say to you?" He asked, ready to send someone after Julia.

"She said something to prove that you are right. Julia said I read a message she sent me. Well, she believed I did since it showed that it was read. Someone was using my old phone. Since I am awake, they must be nervous or curious about something," said Veronica.

"Come inside. I need to check something," Liam said, offering his hand to walk inside with Veronica but then he caught himself and stopped it. ’Sorry," he apologised.

One lunch date didn’t mean anything.

Veronica noticed him pulling back and said, "You can hold my hand when you want to. I don’t see a problem with it."

Veronica noticed each time he tried to reach out to her or kiss her goodbye when they had to part and stopped himself before he could. He was used to doing these interactions so he couldn’t help it.

Liam had earned himself getting to do these things again since he was so honest with her and after the lunch today, Veronica started to like him. She was a bit far away from love but at least she felt something for her husband.

"Okay."

His response gave away that he was still going to stop himself from touching her.

Veronica sighed. She couldn’t be upset that he was being a gentleman to respect that she didn’t remember the man she fell in love with.

Veronica walked by Liam as he held the door open for her. "So, what will you do now? You should be able to track it now that it is being used right?"

"We should. I need to call someone right now. I’ll tell you what we find out when we are done. I don’t want to bore you with waiting so-"

"I know. I will find something to do while you work on it," Veronica replied.

Gone were the days when he kept things from her so she trusted him. At least, she thought he wasn’t keeping anything from her. Liam was answering all the questions she threw at him which made it somewhat easy to act like she had her memories when someone approached her.

Veronica watched as Liam headed upstairs to make the call. They needed to move fast to track the phone but at the same time, after coming from a good lunch she had been anticipating what they would do when they got home.

Veronica looked around the home, not knowing what to do with herself. "Sleep it is," she decided.

***

In the city, Beth returned home with Evelyn after what she saw as a successful start to her becoming a model. The appointment Evelyn set up after meeting with Veronica had put Beth in another mood.

"You should put on one of the masks we bought today. I’ll speak to your uncle about renewing your membership at the spa. My little model," Evelyn said, excited to throw Beth into that world. She would be right there at Beth’s side from beginning to end. "It would be perfect if you end up going into acting. I can teach you a few things."

Beth tried not to laugh. When was Evelyn going to stop telling lies about once being an actress? If no one could take one look at you and recall your work then you were not an actress worth speaking about.

Beth needed a break from Evelyn’s excitement. "I am going to take off my makeup then we can look at the photos I took today."

She was almost tempted to post the photos she took with Evelyn to show how Evelyn was running around like a doting mother. Beth was certain Veronica watched her page to see what she was up to. She hoped it hurt Veronica to see her mother interested in what someone else was doing.

Beth dropped her bags on the floor for someone else to put away before her uncle came home to see him. She headed to her bedroom which started to feel small considering the new work she was getting herself into.

She locked the door so Evelyn couldn’t come and tell her about something else she could help with. Evelyn annoyed her at times but she had to keep Evelyn close to show Veronica.

Beth went to her vanity to sit down and take off her makeup. She set her phone to the side, taking a break from it as too many were sending her messages about Veronica’s current state.

The sound of a phone vibrating annoyed her.

"Who is it now?" Beth angrily questioned. Fear replaced anger when she noticed that her phone didn’t vibrate.
