Chapter 332: Too Well Done

Lane tapped his fingers on the table, staring intently at the screen. He was sitting alone in his apartment. It was Damien’s team’s day off, but Damien still had to go to work. After the recent dungeon break, things at the Association got chaotic, and Damien was way too busy once again... Every day, he left early in the morning, and was back late at night, which greatly displeased Lane. With how busy Damien was, he didn’t have much time for Lane... Of course, Lane couldn’t help but complain.

Even though he was just as busy himself. Although he had left most of the management of the secret organization to other people, he was still the Boss. Any important plan needed his approval before it could be implemented. Unless he wanted to back out of the organization completely, he had to do his part...

And he couldn’t back out. Putting aside that he no longer knew what he wanted himself... Leaving the organization would cut him off from most of the sources of information that he had established. He could bear the loss of money, as he still had other investment, but if he didn’t even know what was going on around him... He might not be able to deal with the Allens. Not to mention, the secret organization would still carry on, just with someone else, most likely Blanc, at the lead. Who knows what they would do next?

So, he had no choice but to begrudgingly read through all the reports.

Which brought him to the current moment.

He was sitting cross-legged on the floor in his living room by the coffee table, sipping on a super sweet frappuccino he had ordered. It’s been a while, and the ice had already melted. Blanc’s report, detailing the current situation in the Capital and the ways they could utilize it to proceed with their plans, was opened right in front of him. He had already read it twice, then moved on to the rest of the reports, before eventually going back to it once again.

He had to admit that it was really well done. As expected of Blanc. But at the same time...

It had only been two days since the recent dungeon break when the report had arrived. Only two days, and Blanc had already managed to put together a report like that.

Almost as if he knew that a dungeon break would happen in Branwick.

It seemed that he was getting bolder and bolder. Was he no longer afraid of Lane? Or did he think that Lane wouldn’t do anything to him? If so...

Then he was right. There was nothing Lane could do. Not unless he wanted to suffer heavy losses. At most he could demote Blanc... And even that shouldn’t be done without a good reason. After a few years in the Forbidden Zone No. 74, Blanc surely must have had a solid support network.

At this moment, Lane suddenly regretted taking his position as the Boss so lightly in the past. He was the Boss in name, but he never paid too much attention to all the details of the organization, leaving it all for his subordinates. He knew more or less what was going on in the lab thanks to Ava’s collaboration, and he had a good grasp on the military department, as it was within his interests... But as for the rest, he only skimmed through the reports. And he rarely even visited the Forbidden Zone No. 74, so his presence in the minds of the organization members was also rather blurry and insignificant...

There was no use in regretting it now. Lane let out a sigh, and picked up his phone, dialing Blanc’s number.

After just two signals, Blanc picked up the call. "Hello, Boss? Have you read my report?"

Lane’s eyes twitched. He had only just answered the call, and before Lane even had a chance to say anything, Blanc was already asking about that? Just how impatient he was?

He held back his annoyance, though, and answered, "I did. I’m calling regarding that."

"Great. Now, as I detailed in the report, there are currently five Restricted Zones within the Capital, located in various parts. If we plant Fertilizer around each of them, we can force them to extend. With the influx of the Mana activity in several places at the same time, the Awakened Association won’t be able to handle it, and-"

"Not so fast," Lane interrupted. "I have read all that you wrote... But I have no intention of approving of this plan."

Blanc went silent for a moment. When he spoke again, though, he didn’t sound surprised at all. "Boss, if you have read what I’ve wrote, then you must also have seen my justification as to why it is the best time for us to take action. May I ask what part of it you disagree with?"

Then, before Lane could answer, he added, "Boss, I advise you to think about it carefully. While I understand that you must have your reasons... Some of our members are getting impatient... They don’t understand why, when things are going so well, we’re not speeding up the progress, but instead are slowing down..."

"...Are you threatening me?" Lane’s voice turned sharp.

But Blanc still answered smoothly, "Of course not. I’m just reporting to you the unrest I have noticed. It wouldn’t be good for anyone if it developed into an internal conflict, right?"

Lane almost laughed out loud. "What a great subordinate you are!"

"...Thank you for your compliment."

Even though they only talked over the phone, the tension between them could still be felt in the air. Really, Lane wanted to just reach out and strangle the man...

But he couldn’t. Even if he could somehow teleport to where Blanc was, he still wouldn’t be able to do anything. Eliminating Blanc now wouldn’t solve the problem, on the contrary, it would make things worse... There were other smart people with their own plans and ideas who might step up when he was gone. And Lane didn’t have time to deal with them one by one...

At least Blanc was still obeying Lane, even if only on the surface.

So, he took a deep breath, and explained,

"The reason is very simple. If we use those Restricted Zones, the Capital might become inhabitable."
