Chapter 320: Start of the New Job

"So? How do I look?" Lane smiled, showing himself to Damien.

He was wearing the Association’s uniform. Although he had only obtained the Esper license the previous day, it had been over a month since he had signed the contract. His uniform had long been issued, and everything had been arranged, so that the moment he had finally passed, everything was ready. He could start the job the very next day.

Damien finished fixing his hair back, and turned his eyes to Lane, pausing for a moment.

Lane did look good. To begin with, his face was pretty enough that he would look good in anything. And his body was also great - tall and fit, slender. With well-defined muscles, but not too bulky... Even though the Association’s uniform wasn’t designed to be flattering, the clothes fit Lane extremely well.

However, at the same time, it looked oddly out of place. While Lane’s figure might have been right for it, his pink hair... When paired up with the military style uniform, it seemed oddly mismatched. Not only their color, but also the fact they were slightly messy... The hairstyle was a stylistic choice, of course, and it worked well with Lane’s facial features, but not with the seriousness and propriety a public servant should display.

Which was understandable. Lane was most certainly not made to be a public servant. From his identity and past, to his attitude and personal beliefs, he was not the right fit for the job. Nor did he ever show any actual interest in it.

If it wasn’t for the fact that he was dating Damien and had shared his secrets with the man, ’Lane Allen’ would never become a member of the Association.

When he thought about it that way, Damien felt a little guilty... But it was too late for Lane to back out now. And besides, Lane had previously joined the Association with his fake identities, so there must have been something he was trying to get out of it... Although, whether that was a good thing or not, Damien didn’t know.

Either way, Lane was already a member of the Association now. As for everything else, Damien could try to figure it out step by step. For now, he just let out a sigh, and stepped closer to the man.

"Your collar is uneven," he said, as he reached out to fix Lane’s uniform...

The closer he looked, he more wrongs he noticed. It wasn’t just that the collar was uneven. The top button was unfastened, and so was one on his chest pocket. His shoulder marks were twisted. His sleeves were unbuttoned and rolled up once. His uniform shirt was sloppily stuffed into his pants...

Damien looked over Lane carefully, fixing all those mistakes one by one, until Lane’s attire was finally correct. His eyes then fell on the messy pink hair...

But he let it be. Technically speaking, it wasn’t against the dress code, so although it was still a bit inappropriate for the job, at least in Damien’s opinion, he let it be.

Although it was unserious and improper, Damien liked that pink messy hair. It suited Lane very well.

"Alright, let’s go," he said as soon as he finished fixing Lane’s uniform. It was still a bit early, but Damien wanted to stop by his office first, and Lane offered to come with him...

To which Damien agreed. While he wasn’t sure if he would be able to do much paperwork with Lane around, considering his experience the last time he had brought his boyfriend with him to his office... But he didn’t want the man to be late on his first day either. If Lane came with him, at least he would have a chance to keep an eye on him...

They had more inspections scheduled that day. Only two, but they were C and B-rank Gates, so they would be more consuming, as there was more terrain to cover. Once they arrived at Damien’s office and he sat down behind the desk, Damien checked the locations and the maps of the dungeons first, before moving on to the rest of his paperwork...

Surprisingly, Lane was very well behaved. Unlike what Damien had expected, he didn’t pounce at him after sitting still for a few minutes. Instead, he made himself comfortable on the uncomfortable couch on the side, playing some mobile games...

In fact, he was so well behaved that Damien couldn’t help but worry that he might be sick, and lifted his head, casting concerned glances at Lane from time to time.

And eventually, Lane also took his eyes off the screen, pausing the game.

"What?" he asked, meeting Damien’s eyes with a wide smile.

But Damien only maintained eye contact for a moment, before shaking his head.

There was no way that Lane was so quiet for no reason. He must have been scheming something... But if Damien asked, Lane would most likely only tease him about it. And although Damien didn’t mind that, he was now at work and had things to do, so he just said, "It’s nothing."

Lane’s eyes narrowed, staring at Damien intently. In the end, though, he didn’t say anything.

Naturally, he could guess what Damien was thinking. And indeed, it wasn’t that he wasn’t tempted to climb onto Damien’s lap and complete the necessary checkpoints of a proper office romance...

But things were different now. There was a spy from the Allen Guild in their ranks who would try to find a fault with Lane whenever he could. So, in order to avoid any unnecessary complications, Lane had to tread carefully. It was fine for Lane to have sex with Damien in their free time, even in the office, but if they ended up late because of that, then that might affect Damien negatively. Thinking about it, Lane felt a massive headache incoming. On one hand, he wanted to show off his relationship with Damien to Ethan (as well as the rest of the world), while on the other, he had to make sure he didn’t act too out of line...

Living honestly as ’Lane Allen’ was so complicated.
