Chapter 162: Egg Hunt

The team passed through the ruins of the entrance hall, the rubble crunching under their heavy boots as they quickly moved forward. They had no time to lose. Plenty of Guilds had already entered, so if they took too long, they wouldn’t be able to make a satisfying contribution... And reap the desired awards.

"Hey, Jose," one Esper whispered to his colleague. "Do you think that... Huh?"

He blinked, suddenly pausing mid-sentence. Because as he turned his head, his friend was not there. Or anywhere in sight, really.

"Hey, where’s Jose?" he raised his voice, calling for attention from the rest of the team.

"Wasn’t he with you?" another Esper asked.

"Well, he was there just a moment ago..."

"Maybe he didn’t enter?"

"I thought I saw him coming in though?"

"Then where is he? We’re still at the entrance, so there was no way for him to go missing!"

"Should we go back to look for him?"

"Out of the Gate? Forget it! If he chickened out, then that’s his problem. We don’t have time to babysit him! Let’s just go!"

"Right, he must be safe outside. So just ignore him!"

The friend hesitated for a moment, glancing at the Gate, but in the end, he shrugged his shoulders and followed after the rest of the team. They were right, Jose must have simply not entered!

They were indeed right. Jose was outside the Gate. Locked in one of the stalls in the toilets at the parking lot, to be precise. While the ’Jose’ that entered with them... had bolted away as soon as they stepped inside the dungeon, and was now running high up in the sky, watching the world below him with his Mana Scan, as he dodged the pesky pterodactyl monsters that tried to nibble on him. Now that he was in his real body, they didn’t pose much threat and he could slaughter them all on his own... But he didn’t want to waste his time on fighting, not this time. It wasn’t what he came here for. He looked around...

And there it was, a green glow rising above the horizon, visible even from far away. Caused by the disgusting green flames, his S-ranker aunt’s ability.

With his target in sight, he charged forward, ignoring the pterodactyls that tried to attack him with their sound waves. They barely affected him anyway. Just as he thought, his real body truly was the best!

He ran above the fields, forests, and lakes, above the groups challenging the monsters with varying efficiency, heading toward the source of the glow. His aunt, naturally, wasn’t the target... Not only did Lane never possess women - he tried it once before, out of curiosity... And he didn’t last too long before abandoning the idea and swearing to never do it again - but he also absolutely abhorred spending even a day in the body of one of his ’beloved’ family members!

However, where Gracie was, the rest of the Allen Guild members attending the summit were also bound to be. Including Oscar, his new pick.

As he approached the team, he pulled out his phone, checking the dungeon map he downloaded... It soon proved to be completely useless though. While it was quite detailed, and its depiction of the area was accurate... It only applied to how the dungeon USED to be. Until it expanded. Which wouldn’t be an issue if the Allen Guild were to hunt monsters in the old territory...

But no, they had to charge ahead! Explore the unknown!

Lane clicked his tongue in annoyance. Ignoring the fact that it was one of the family traits he also shared...

He stopped a safe distance away from the group, circling around them as he investigated the new area. Perhaps... If he played it right... He might use it to his advantage, actually. If he didn’t have a map... neither did the Allens.

And just so it happened that there was a massive cliff a bit ahead! A very... crumbly cliff. Perfect for plots such as separating a team! All Lane had to do was push the group in that direction, nudge the cliff a bit to help with its disintegration, and he might have a great opportunity to snatch his target away on his hands!

He pressed his lips, his eyes wandering around as a plan formed in his head. If he remembered correctly, there was a T Rex lookalike’s nest not far from there, he noticed in on his way... If he were to steal an egg, perhaps he could make the monsters chase after him, and lead them there? With too many enemies on their backs, the Allen Guild would have no option but to flee, heading straight toward the cliff...

It seemed doable. Lane nodded to himself, his lips curving into a smile, and in the blink of an eye, he vanished from his spot, running toward the nest to put his plan into action. He slowed down as he got close, trying to quietly approach...

But the monsters’ sense of smell was extraordinary. Lane barely got near enough to spot the eggs, and the T Rexes already noticed his presence.

Well, whatever.’ Lane shrugged his shoulders... And dashed forward, grabbing the egg, and bolting away. He HAD to be noticed anyway, or how else he’d get the monsters to follow him?

"ROOOOOAR!"

A massive roar shook the world, making the air tremble. The T Rexes got to their feet, the ground and the trees all shaking with their steps. Lane had four... no, five of them chasing after him. More than he wanted... But it was still fine. Probably.

He ran toward the members of the Allen Guild... And as he got close, he took a massive swing...

And threw the egg their way. It drew a large arc in the air, before breaking on one of the dinosaur kangaroo hybrids’ head, its contents splashing all over, falling onto most of the people gathered. Especially Gracie.

"ROOOOAR!"

Another roar shook the forest, even angrier this time. Lane couldn’t help but chuckle, as he activated his cloaking ability, trying to at least lower his visibility, and quickly moved high up with his Sky Step, getting out of the T Rexes’ way. Although he was the culprit, the egg - or rather, its sad remains - was now with the Allen Guild, thus changing the monsters’ target. Even if any of them were smart enough to still want to catch Lane, T Rexes couldn’t fly, and Lane was already too far above their heads.

Back on the ground, a large wave of green flames swept the area, as Gracie yelled, "Move! We can’t deal with so many of them!" and the team rushed straight ahead...

Exactly where Lane needed them to be.

He quickly followed, hiding himself underneath the cliff’s precipice, running in place to maintain his elevation. And once he heard the steps reach the cliff... He took out a heavy sword, stabbed it in between the rocks, and activated its ’shockwave’ ability.

It was such a good idea to have a wide assortment of weapons always at hand in his spatial bag!

Lane smiled, satisfied with himself, as massive rumbling resounded within the rocks above his head.
