Chapter 154: T Rex’s Cousin Joins the Party
The rubble never fell on them. It just levitated in the air for a moment, before dropping on the ground with a series of loud thuds.
Right. Nyla’s main ability was telekinesis. Lane’s brain must have short-circuited, so that he has momentarily forgotten.
"Are you alright?" Nyla turned to Lane, dropping her hand.
"Ah... Yeah, yeah." Lane quickly let go of his sister, and jumped onto his feet. Because of his stupid stunt, they both fell down and rolled on the ground, and were now practically drenched in the red sludge. And, while Nyla’s suit was still holding on, Lane’s uniform... Well, let’s just say it had seen better days.
"Squawrgh..." Their pesky ’friend’ scrambled from beneath the rubble - Nyla only protected herself and Lane, so the monster ended up getting hit by a large piece of the wall - and shook its head. It blinked a few times, trashing around, its movements unsteady...
Lane was just about to take that opportunity to attack and deal with it once and for all, when...
"ROOOOOAR!"
Everything shook from the sheer force of the sound. It wasn’t a Mana ability, no, just a regular roar, but it was powerful enough to cause tiny rubble to roll around, and the sludge on the ground to ripple.
And, with the heavy steps that seemed to be able to shake the whole world, the culprit behind the rubble rain emerged onto the field.
"...Oh, shit," Lane groaned.
The new monster looked like T Rex’s cousin, twice removed. Except that it was a bit taller? Lane wasn’t sure. Most, if not all, of his knowledge regarding dinosaurs came from that series of dinosaur park movies, and he didn’t know how accurate they were.
And it was not alone.
Still, neither were Lane and Nyla. There were plenty of Espers left in the Arena, so the newcomers wouldn’t necessarily bother the twins specifically. So, instead of worrying about the potential threat, it was better to focus on the one at hand.
That is, the pterodactyl right in front of them, which still hasn’t given up on its desired meal.
Even though it was badly injured, from Lane and Nyla’s attacks, and then from getting smashed by a large chunk of the heavy wall. In truth, it had already lost, it just hasn’t accepted that yet.
A short chuckle escaped Lane’s mouth, as he stared at the monster preparing to attack them, despite its struggles. He had never seen anyone - or, well, ’anything’ in this case - so deep in denial!
"Let’s go for the wings," he said to Nyla. "I take the right."
"And then I’ll slash its throat," Nyla added.
They looked at each other and nodded, setting off at the same time. They slashed the softer skin underneath the wings in synch, Nyla almost severing it, Lane only making a gash due to Xavier’s lower strength, but at least deep enough to stop the pterodactyl from being able to fly. Then, Nyla ducked underneath its belly, rolling over to reach its neck - even though her skin was already red and raw from the corrosive substance, damaging her pretty face - and slashing with her dagger...
But the monster started trashing even more, spinning in place as it spewed the red liquid, splashing it everywhere... All while letting terrible, high-pitched squeaks.
And a moment later, its calls were answered, as another... no, two more pterodactyl monsters zoomed their way. Bigger ones. Parents, perhaps?
’Fuuuuck!’ Lane swore inwardly. Why couldn’t monster parents be like the Allens?
"Run!" he shouted at Nyla, rushing forward...
But then the ugly brownish-green mug of a T Rex lookalike came into view.
They had the two large pterodactyls on their backs, tyrannosaurs ahead of them, and on the sides... most likely more pterodactyls, or another T Rex!
"Fuuuuu...." Lane took a sharp breath, exchanging glances with Nyla. Then, as if on command, they both came to a stop, turned around on the spot, and charged at the nearest pterodactyl, that lowered its altitude to bite at them.
And attacked together, Nyla from the top, Lane from the bottom. They slashed, and instantly dodged to the side, putting some distance between them and the monster.
The monster picked Lane this time to snack on first. It lounged at him with his beak...
But Lane ducked, sliding on the ground, his skin burning from the sludge that seeped through his partially melted clothes. It was a good thing that he at least wore the vest he got from Damien, as it gave him more protection than the Association’s uniform.
He didn’t have time to worry about the pain. In fact, he barely even noticed it amidst it all, the chaos, the roaring and screams, constant shaking of the ground and the T Rex’s cousins ran around, bulldozing through the obstacles and snapping their jaws at the Espers. In front of it all, what was a little stinging?
Without a second of delay, he got up from the ground, and rushed toward the other pterodactyl, so that he and Nyla could give another joint attack a try...
Thud, thud, thud, THUD.
Lane’s heart jumped to his throat. So they had attracted the T Rex’s attention after all.
And it was now running toward them.
And stretching its large, ugly-ass head toward Nyla, spreading its jaws wide open...
.
What happens to a twin when the other twin dies? Lane didn’t know, and he didn’t care to find out. He wasn’t a scientist to conduct experiments.
Yes, that was the only reason why he did it. There was no other...
Ah, damn.
They were in public. Everyone was busy fighting, yes, but you never know who might see. Lane shouldn’t use any abilities aside from Toxic Ooze, at least not any obvious ones, just in case.
However.
There was still a fair distance between him and Nyla, and the monster was almost there.
He made a decision in a... No, it can’t be even called a decision, since not even a single thought was made. He just activated Sky Step and all the possible boosts he had, reaching his sister in a split second and pulling them both out of the way...
But he was a split of a split second too late. Because at that moment, he felt a weird breeze on his back, followed by a burst of sharp pain that made his vision momentarily turn black.
