Chapter 695: 10.09.3 Skip it.

Life is cruel in these parts. The poor had no choice but to compromise their dignity, and their own family, to eke out a livelihood.

Selling children was far more common than one might expect. Of course, the same was not true for the girl. Ignorant as she was, her mind went numb as she was led by her father toward the carriage, where a stout man stood.

From the looks alone, it can be seen he was strong, far stronger than her father. "How is she?" Her father asked the man, as he wiped the dirt off his daughter’s face. Completely oblivious of her broken state of mind at this point.

And in this dark, with barely any illumination from the stars above and the lantern on the carriage, none noticed the blood or injury on the girl, all they cared about was her facial structure and the slaver nodded. "She is a fine one." There was no question over why there was mud on her face, there were no surprises over her lack of struggle. She was, as they say, a walking dead.

She had endured too much that night, and her mind had crashed out. There was nothing she could say that would change things anyway, nor the strength to achieve it. So going numb might be the best way to save her mentality.

’No...’

"No... I won’t go, not with you. The man you sold Jina to, sell me to him." Her mind opened up, the face of her youngest sister, the only one that was left of her family. In her mind, this father of hers was already dead. It’s the only way she can maintain the meaning of the word family.

But her burst of outcry didn’t do much, the man just laughed at her, tightly holding her arm till it hurt before saying. "You are mine now... the sale is already made." He spoke, turning to look at the father, who completely ignored his struggling daughter and started to walk into the home without looking back.

"Hah, this scene always..." the man mumbled before he opened the carriage to show its walls lined up with chains and a small dog that was bound at the end. "Don’t struggle and get inside," he spoke, but the girl didn’t budge, she struggled and kept calling out to her father to sell her to the one that bought her sister.

But there was no response and the slaver also reached his limits as he said. "You foolish girl." With a single slap, her body turned loose, almost causing her to lose consciousness. But she endured, her cries never stopped and the beatings never stopped.

Sadly, the slaver didn’t go too hard because he feared harming the merchandise, which increased his frustration. "Girl... consider yourself lucky it’s me and not the man your little sister was sold to."

At the mention of the Jina, the girl turned silent. "You know who it is? Sell me to that guy, and I won’t complain, just let me be together with her."

"Did you not listen to what I said?... that man caters to mages, and all his merchandise ends up in the mage tower for experiments." He spoke, seeing that the girl was a lot more silent when the topic of her sister was up.

"Mages?" Confused she asked. The most she had heard about were knights and nothing more.

"Then sell me to the mages, I will do my best to fetch you a good price."

"Foolish girl, no one that goes into a mage’s tower ever comes out. Your sister is the same as dead, so forget about her." When the slaver spoke these words, he had already succeeded in putting her into the carriage.

Though it was at this point, he saw that the girl’s face looked toward the Hut, her eyes moist, her mind couldn’t just handle the ups and downs at this point.

’Why this misery.’ She wondered, looking toward her house, where the three siblings played together.

Although they were poor with barely any friends among the villagers, the three were happy even though their mother had died due to infection two winters ago.

’Why us? ’ She had never before questioned this simple question: Why were they treated differently than the rest? The untouchables looked the same, albeit with slightly darker skin. They bled the same, and they even spoke the same language.

So why such cruelty towards them? Why were they treated less than animals? Why them?

Why her?

So many questions that her brain hurt, so much misery that she didn’t even want to breathe anymore. The idea of hanging herself against one of those chains came into her mind, her hand moving towards them, hoping to escape all this misery.

"Foolish one, losing such a great opportunity to exact your righteous fury." A voice came, startling the girl who looked around the dark carriage, before noticing two iridescent eyes, lighting up in the darkness.

"Monster?" She questioned, her head tilting to the side. "Embrace me.... Devour me. Give me freedom." Was this a hallucination? Was this a dream?

She didn’t know, her mind was too weak to process such thoughts, leaving only her true thoughts in the open.

"No, not a monster, but something closer..." I spoke, as small eyes started to light up in the dark, eyes far smaller than the ones before. "A god, I am."

"And if you wish to save your sister, devour me." Spoke to me as I walked toward her in my small body. "Eat me, and be free and strong enough to take what is yours."

******

It’s been seven years since that night.

A night that was considered a nightmare for certain people in the village of Kudul. The night in which a swarm of rats came and ate countless people alive, leaving nothing behind besides a few lucky survivors.

The rats never discriminated, they ate the men, the women, and the children, leaving nothing behind in their wake.

And with that, they ate all that might hold a trace of the girl, who she was, where she lived, and what happened to her.

After that night, the girl had entirely disappeared from the world. Of course, the reality was far from that.

"Sister, you are back?" Jina was older, appearing to have entered her teens. "You should have come earlier, you missed Charmel festival... there were so many good things to eat this time." The girl named Jina currently lives in a dormitory paid for by her sister’s hard-earned cash. As for what her sister did? It was no secret.

The armor on her sister’s body mixed with all those scratches, it easy to see what her profession was. This is all the more reason why Jina never wanted to let her sister leave her sight. But this is life, the easy life which is all she could remember is only possible due to her sister’s sacrifice.

"Don’t worry, just something came up recently, I will be on time next year." the girl spoke, her smile brighter than ever, and each of her actions worry-free. However, before she could go out for a sister’s day, a whisper spoke in her ear. "The sapling failed... hunt some more fertilizers."
