Chapter 605: 9.12.2 Rudhir and the cat.
It was a trap, an unexpected one as he barely understood the nature of his opponent until he was caught. It was past and the path of Transmutation and illusion was barely developed. The majority of mages at this time were arcanists, and their mind was too limited to what the term element even meant.
They haven’t explored the micro-universe that was the building blocks of the world, which can be seen from their simpler spells that lacked firepower in Farhad’s eyes. It would be appropriate to call these spells just manipulation of elements on the surface level.
So why did he fall for it? Obviously Farhad, after learning the goal of Lord Dilbur, there was no need to struggle too much. Killing will only get you farther than the goal and turn the whole scenario chaotic. So it’s better to play along the game and learn the situation at his own pace.
Now, bound in a tomb made up of gravel, Farhad floated up into the air, barely given enough space to breathe, not like he had a need to. "Hasina, you can come out now, the situation has been handled."
At her beckoning the old woman came out, showing a level of subservience in the air, which slowly divided up to expose the figure that had been talking all this while.
It was a young woman, though her looks were the only thing young about her, Hasina remembered when she was just a young girl, this woman looked the same as she did now. And even then, she didn’t know Mage Dilbur’s real age.
"I apologize for my mistake Lady Dilbur."
"There is no need, without you, I wouldn’t have obtained a specimen as great as this, and besides, I want to know how he was able to travel underground at such a speed. It shouldn’t be a curse." She thought.
Generally, a Curse Master would only have one curse housing in their body, the rest, they can use cursed items as tools to deal with the enemies if the need is for some variety. But Farhad, his own body showed signs of multiple curses once he got into action. That intrigued the mage. Making her glad that Hasina was followed tonight. "But this just happened to be a happy coincidence, I would expect you to be more careful from now on, for who knows, who else has eyes on your family." She spoke with a smile, before gesturing Hasina to follow her to a hole that appeared out of nowhere.
This whole forest was currently affected by a magical formation that could hide from not only foreign eyes but could even fool curse attacks to some extent. But being a paranoid person, Mage Dilbur also chose to build her tower inverted.
And she was not alone here. "Gaur, come and take this man to my lab, use the strongest cage available." Many apprentices were working under her, with Gaur and another one being at the Master level, and completely capable of starting their own Tower.
But they never did, because working for Mage Dilbur was far more rewarding. Not to mention the protection her existence provided, as not everyone had a magic circle protecting their tower as powerful as her.
"As you say, Tower Master." Gaur bowed, before leaving the scene with Farhad in toe, who really had no space to breathe. Or so his opponent might have thought. But that was not what Farhad was thinking at the moment. ’It’s really somewhat similar.’ His old school, Lucien’s abode was also a situation underground due to them dealing with death and corruption a lot.
And although the case was different considered that this place was built for earth mages, it still somewhat reminded him of his past. A weak and ignorant past where he was treated worse than trash.
He couldn’t help but wonder what his life would have been like if Jester hadn’t come to mess with him. ’A worse life, probably.’ Shaking his head off the thoughts, Farhad started to feel the various mages that lived in the tower, which didn’t even exceed a total of fifteen individuals. But they were not the only people here.
There were some humans kept in cages, some barely alive, and some feeling more like a beast. This is what Farhad expects of a Mage tower, the old mage tower that barely had any morals when exploring the world of magic. They didn’t mind using human materials, which is now a taboo in modern days.
’The food she brings, it’s obviously for someone here, one of the mages?’ Farhad felt, trying to keep track of the old Hasina. But the further deep he went into the Tower, the harder it became to keep track of her due to all the magical interference that messed with his senses. Of course, it meant that Farhad found a few more of these test subjects, one worse than the other, and it didn’t take long before Farhad finally saw the state of some of them.
’What is this?’ From the little hole into the rock tomb that floated beside the mage named Gaur, Farhad saw the state of those that he had felt not too long ago.
They were pitiful. Some of them had different minerals growing out of their body, while others were spread apart on the operating table, while still being alive. There was no distinction between the old and young here, no one cared about that simple stuff. In the eyes of these mages, the common mortals were nothing more than research subjects.
’A past that had already come to be, none of my actions would ever help these people.’ And Farhad didn’t break his cool, he kept his mouth shut and his head clear.
"Master Gaur, please wait a minute, what is it that you are carrying?" Asked a young woman matching the same gait as Gaur, she appeared to be the other Master of the Tower. "A curse Meister that Master caught not too long ago... she seemed pretty jubilant over it."
"Master being happy? Now that is a rare one... I can’t recall the last time she was as happy as you make it out to be." She thought before her eyes lit up and looked to the back. "The last time was that boy right?"
"The Dhuma kid?... you are probably right, but she also got disappointed after what happened later." Gaur spoke before shutting his mouth. The failures of his master were not to be talked lightly, for God knows her wrath is worse than the devils.
On the other hand, Farhad was on the side, listening intently over the matters, before his eyes lit up. ’The Dhuma kid? There was one more?’ From the looks of it, not all members were present when Farhad initially went to that family. ’Interesting..., one of their members is here and now they are even bringing food to the kid?’
As for who this kid was? It didn’t take long before he finally reached the last of the labs and and slowly placed in a cage specifically made to hold monsters. "You sit here now," Gaur spoke, before turning to look at the other barely alive materials and one goal cage that was currently covered in a dark cloth. "Rudhir, you can finally have some respite, a new one is here." He spoke before leaving the scene calmly.
This was his master’s personal lab and with the magical defenses placed in this room, any mistake on his end would mean his death, and he had already seen what happens to those who get too curious in that room. He was not always the top apprentice under his master.
Though his fears and ruminations did not matter to Farhad, he just looked around the misery and then the man individual in the biggest cage of this room. ’Vitality is very low. Is he even alive?’ Thought Farhad, before his eyes lit up because he noticed some movements from the cage, followed by a sound.
A sound too feeble to be heard by normal humans, but Farhad can understand each word clearly. ’Oh, I pity you... I would try... for your freedom.’ It spoke in a tone that held some kindness that was rare in Farhad’s life to witness.
’Am I being pitied?’ Being pitied was not even the issue, the real issue was the figure who pitied Farhad.
A figure that should be dead, but had remained alive.
A figure whose flesh had atrophied, but was somehow able to move.
A figure whose eyes had gone white, but somehow able to see.
And it was with all these traits combined, that this boy slowly moved the cover of his cage, exposing his figure to Farhad.
’What?’ In front of him appeared a boy who was not even a decade old. But his dark skin was covered in wrinkles and his hair was white. There was even a nauseating smell of rot and piss wafting off his cage, that was a sign of death. But this man somehow survived.
But that was not all. ’What... what is going on?’ Before Farhad could do a thing, he felt movement in the flames of his heart, it moved in his body, trying to break free and burn the very existence of this very boy.
’What is going on?’ This, usually happens when a curse tries to infiltrate his body, such anger, such strength. If not for his control, the figure would have burst out of Farhad’s body and burnt this boy alive.
And yes, it was not purification, but complete annihilation. That’s the intent he felt from the flames.
’Something is odd, should I break it?" Farhad wondered before a ting sound came from the distance, and he saw a small cat saunter into the room and come across Farhad’s cage, and then to his horror, it slowly spelled out the word. "Save boy." with its tiny claw.
