Chapter 603: 9.11.5 The weird thing.

The history of Dhumas was the history of this Town. It was the classic rise to power, but some conflict arose in between. Mining rights came into question once the Dhumas were able to afford them, putting them in competition with other families.

But one way or another, the Dhuma’s kept winning one after another. On the surface might seem normal if it was the world of mortals, but in this world with curses everywhere, it was bizarre how none of the family members of Dhuma’s ever suffered any accidents. Even when their enemies would die off due to curses at random, the Dhuma remained free of this.

Which is what Farhad pointed out. "The Dhuma’s came out unharmed through all these competitions? Don’t you find it odd?" Both sides employ Curse masters to harm each other. These were not the present day when church services for purification were everywhere, in the olden days, the curse held actual danger that was not so easy to ignore.

"Well, there were deaths, but not on the Dhuma’s side." Spoke Ashwin, slowing down a bit. It’s not that he didn’t notice this oddity. Most in the city knew about this, but when one thinks about the guardian of the Dhuma Family, they usually attribute the Dhuma’s safety to her. Which was understandable, considering how little the current populace understood curses.

In their eyes if someone is deemed a Curse Meister, didn’t it mean they understood how to deal with curses?

But that was a wrong thought to have. Curse Masters are users of curses, but it doesn’t mean they are knowledgeable about it. There are limits to their understanding and the reason why they were inferior to the Exorcist, who can be considered the true masters.

Making the Curse Meister pretty limited. The best method they can employ is forcing the curses to jump from one place to another and then sacrificing the one that now carries the curse.

Which can be as simple as a small chicken to even a human being.

But that is definitely not the case in this scenario, as such things are hard to hide nowadays. This means that there is something else going on in there.

’So I should make a move?’ Farhad thought before looking toward Ashwin and saying. Enough for today, I will be taking a rest." He let him go out while he remained in his room all alone.

There was no need to act at this time, he would move at night.

Which came faster than he anticipated. Truly, a world without clocks really moved much faster than he would have anticipated. ’Move’ Of course, there was one difference in how he moved, There was no need for him to move above ground, that would make him noticed easily by others, as rarely anyone goes out once the sun goes down and those that do stay are generally pugilist or some dangerous elements that finally had the time to act, like the certain nocturnal species of beings he had smelled in the morning.

Who posed no threat to current Farhad unless there was a true blood close by, which was hard considering the mage wouldn’t allow such a being to get close to him. Farhad was pretty much free to cause as much havoc as he wanted.

But he won’t. There were certain rules to places like this, and if he had learned anything from Jester’s memories, then it was to find the core of this dream and break it. Which is what he intends to do at this point.

His body slouched and then turned into a bizarre beast with countless beastly arms with bones sticking out of them.

It was his digger mode, formed by combining all the mutative cells go ghouls that were good at digging into one optimized being.

And he dove into the earth, moving like a mole rat but at a speed akin to a swordfish in water. Which did end up causing some disturbance above ground due to how fast he was moving underground, but it was also due to this very speed, by the time people had reacted and became curious about what broke their sleep, Farhad had long left the area.

’I didn’t notice it before, but the earth, it smells.’ Farhad thought to himself, finding that even the land itself carried a certain level of Curse energy, showing that the misery he had watched above ground might just be a start, if a curse was born on this earth, famine would be the least of people’s worry. Which did open his eyes somewhat.

Humanity was able to survive such an ordeal and come out on top, showing their tenacity and adaptability. ’Jester’s actions don’t seem that cruel in comparison.’ The deaths and misery that the public suffered all their life were truly horrific in Farhad’s eyes, which increased his appreciation for the modern days.

However, that appreciation for modern times was also followed by a sudden realization. ’Misery is still misery, I am a conduit of one.’

Shaking his head from the distracting thoughts that suddenly overcame his goal, Farhad soon reached the mill that was currently closed at the moment. But the mounds that were slowly smoking on the side remained the same.

’The security is lost.’ There was only a single Curse Mesiter sleeping in the guard’s room, while those that were awake were mostly mortals. Even then, they barely had any energy or intent to guard the site. ’Expected, let’s move in deeper.’ Farhad then drilled at a much slower rate deeper into Dhuma territory and arrived at their residence.

Which were still lit up with some activity, though from the fluctuating vitality of these individuals, Farhad knew that something odd was going on. ’The symptoms?’ He wondered, slowly crawling out of the ground and compressing his body as much as he could, before in his animal form he entered the house by easily making a hole in their wall without even using any effort.

And the moment he stepped into the room, his skin turned translucent, adapting to the lights and colors around him, almost becoming intangible to look at.

This was his partial invisibility, enough to fool the majority of mortals. Not like this would see much use as Farhad can stray away from any humans just by detecting their vitality.

"They are still suffering?" Came an old voice, that did interest Farhad, as it would seem that the old man was not among those that were currently crying in pain.

"Everyone still is... this one is far longer than before." Spoke to the Guardian of the family Hasina with some worry. "Is it right for you to send that man away? It would have been good to keep him here... I had seen his talents, they are real." Unlike the cold character she showed to Farhad before, this Guardian was speaking in a kinder tone about Farhad unlike before. Which might be an act now that Farhad thinks about it with added context.

Of course, the old man didn’t care. "And let an outsider learn of our secrets? I can’t allow it. Unless he became my servant using a vow, I can’t allow anyone else to learn of him." There was some anger in the old man’s voice, an anger that was mostly filled with helpless defeat.

There were certain things he couldn’t say, things he couldn’t accept, things he couldn’t do for the prosperity of his family.

"Just two weeks more, after it, we can deal with him... my kids need to just handle the pain for two weeks, and they can do it. I believe in them."

’The curse was real, though unlike what they said before, they might know the source of it.’ Two weeks.

Why two weeks? Wondered Farhad who they were talking about and why they needed to wait if they knew who the culprit was. Things didn’t add up properly. Something odd was going on in here.

"What about the other method I suggested? Putting weak ones in hospice, the drugs will alleviate the pain for a while or knock them out to even notice the pain." At this suggestion, the Patriarch shook his head in acceptance. "We can go for that. Though the servants that will look after them need to be vetted by me beforehand, I can’t allow any random elements to cause any further chaos in my family."

"I already know this... and look at the time, guess it’s time to feed that thing." She spoke, finding that it was the appropriate time to find that thing which had been causing them so much trouble.

’Guess I don’t have to wait too long to learn what the issue is.’ Farhad soon followed after the old woman.

It was not the first time he had used stealth, he had done so countless times on the battlefield, using it to ambush his enemies, which had made him a master of sorts that helped him stray away from the eyes of the old woman that seemed a bit jumpier than usual.

’Let’s see where she goes, was Farhad’s thoughts before finding that instead of moving someplace into the residence. She soon left the house with a small clothed box that seemed to hold some food.
