Chapter 459: 7.18.3 Dropping like a bomb.
Their grip was strong, I could feel them cutting into my flesh as well as my bones, which was a feat in itself and proof that the ghouls that grabbed me underground were at least at the level of Adept.
No, I would say that they were much stronger than that because I could feel a level of resistance as I tried to copy their genetics by absorbing a piece of their flesh. "Enough," I spoke as my hands turned longer and sharper.
Turning into a hook-like and clamping onto the walls of the tunnel, I slowly descend to the ground.
But with the bit of growls, the force on my body increased, as the ghouls increased their speed. Causing many of my spiky bones to splinter and break apart. ’This is troublesome.’ I knew that things had gone in the way I never expected, I had attracted the eyes of something that was out of my control.
Something strong.
"Ho..." Stop, I sent a signal from my mind, attempting to control these beasts. Just an experiment on my end, but after a bit of slowdown, my descent resumed again. ’I do have some effect.’ I tried to signal them again and again, but after the first time, I noticed no change in their actions. The most my eyes could see in this dark tunnel where even moving my body was a struggle, was a tentacle with bony hooks at the end that tightly wrapped around my feet.
’It’s big.’ I understood it from the shape alone.
I was no match for it. But it didn’t mean I had no way out.
With a bit of my will, my body lit up with flames, burning not only my clothes but also the tentacle that was clamping on my leg.
But besides the sizzling of some flesh, not much else happened. ’What is going on?’ It was an odd feeling for me after a long while.
A hint of expectation mixed with fear, which truly was a fresh sensation that I hadn’t felt in a long time. ’Ah, an adventure whose result I can’t predict at all.
I thought, before finding myself wet all of a sudden while the tunnel itself turned smoother, as if made of flesh.
’Ho. I am inside the nest?’ It could be around five hundred meters below ground from where I was dragged from. Though I can’t say for certain, I understood that the distance that we cleared earlier was just a drop in the bucket, we were still far from our target.
No, it was next to impossible for us to reach the target with the big tunnel we had been using. ’It feels more like a trap at this point.’
With a slide sound, my body came into a large room of sorts, with the floor filled with rotten organic liquid of some kind that smelled bad. "... where?" I looked around, finding that the tentacle as disappeared, but that was not of my concern to begin with. ’So many of them?’ I could see it, the whole walls were filled with countless ghouls, some of whose vitality matched that of a Master Ranked Knight.
"Finally... See... lord."
’What...?"
I turned toward what appeared like a tower inside the cavern, a tower with countless heads intermingled together to form a massive spire of flesh. It was my first time seeing something so horrendous, so grotesque that I wanted to puke.
But more than my disgust towards this monstrosity was curiosity. ’This thing can speak?’ I had heard from Boman that there are intelligent ghouls in existence, but this was the first time I saw something like this in front of my eyes.
"Master... see... good... see" Each head spoke a word, making me queasy for the first time. Each word felt grating to my ears, but I didn’t back down out of fear or anything, instead, I walked closer to it sensing that it didn’t mean any harm to me at the moment.
With the small amount of clothes that I could see, most of these heads belonged to the soldiers that had disappeared from the battlefield, though among these heads, I could notice the heads of some children as well. ’Refugees... there hadn’t been refugees since five years ago.’ Where did these kids come from?’
I had no answer to such questions, what I can answer was the misconception this thing had about me. "What are you." I asked it, the weird thing that seemed to consider me its lord.
"Me born... me heard... heard anger... heard confusion... so came.... Eat and eat.. Grow bigger."
"Hmm, you heard?" Although the words were jumbled together, it wasn’t like I couldn’t extract some meaning from them.
This is why I got curious, what did this thing hear that it approached me?
"Your thoughts... everyone.... I stop.... Another stop... " It continued to speak and the more it spoke, the less I understood. "Enough, just tell me, why you brought me here, and if possible I want you to stop the attack on humans above."
"No... food?" The thing asked, his head tilting sideways, all of them at once. "No food... no children.... Nest dead..." It would seem that this thing could understand my words, it could even respond to me without much struggle, making it possible for us two parties to have a dialog.
This is why I made such a request, I had hoped that my words might do the trick and make things easier for the soldiers above. "Enough, if you can’t stop it, then forget about it." I cussed for a bit, finding that my burnt clothes wouldn’t grow back This was a weird experience, to say the least.
I was covered in organic liquid of what seemed to be countless ghouls and surrounded by the smell of rotten flesh and dead bodies.
But I didn’t find any of it disgusting, instead, I could breathe freely in such a disgusting place, I could even act naturally in front of such an abomination after the initial disgust, a sign that I am not what I used to be anymore.
"Angry... more ... food?"
"No, just show me a way out, I need to do something," I spoke to the spire of heads, but it would seem my words didn’t seem to reach it, as it tilted its head to the side.
"I asked you to show me a way, or I can just go out on my own." With those words, I turned to look at the meat hole through which I had fallen out, and I was going to jump toward it when it automatically closed off.
"No..." The thing spoke, causing many others of the holes all over the nest to close up like a flower.
"You, what are you doing," I asked, finally taking a guarded position, wondering what this thing was planning.
"Can’t go... can’t lose... merge." With those words, countless tentacles broke out of the walls, lunging toward my body.
’Shit.’ With the fire covering my flesh, I dodged while turning my hands into bone sickles, cutting away at the tentacles, which were barely injured after each strike, if not for the flames, it would have been much harder for me to hard them.
’Still, it’s not really working.’ I wonder what was wrong, why were the ghouls showing such a level of immunity toward the flames of samadhi that were said to purify all that was unholy?
In front of the ghouls, they acted more like normal flames instead of spiritual ones that had been protecting me all this while.
"This is troublesome." I jumped around, finding that the current amount of my limbs was not enough.
No, not just limbs, Nothing was enough. I was way weak in front of such an odd enemy.
’The ghouls.’ I turned to look at the nest, specifically the pupae that were gestating countless amounts of ghouls.
’Food.’ I knew that on my own, this fight was impossible, so I had to make a drastic choice.
And I did just that, sacrificing my limb and flesh, I jumped around the tentacles and punched a hole inside what seemed like a meat sack with a premature ghoul inside.
"Stop..."
"Absorb!!" Ignoring the shout from the side I felt a hint of vitality entering my body, along with a weird feeling on my back.
Which made me look at this little ghoul deeply. "Wings?" I smiled, then turned to look around. ’It’s a feast then.’
But before I could make any drastic move, it would seem my action had offended the spire made out of hears, as suddenly the air inside the cavern suddenly turned cold.
’Fuck!!’ I looked at the head that slowly floated out of the organic liquid that filled the floor with this cavern. And it was not just one.
’All Masters.’
These things were not meant for me, they were meant for any intruders that dared to come close and harm the core of the nest.
But it would seem that my actions might have offended the beast, or it’s just that it felt threatened by what I did.
Well, whatever the case, things were looking a bit gloomy, to say the least.
But before I could be overwhelmed by the surprise might of the nest, a sound came.
A whistling sound that caused the temperature of the whole cavern to suddenly rise.
’??’
And before I could even respond, the hole through which I came from suddenly exploded with immense light, as a figure covered with white flames crashed directly over the Master ranked ghouls, turning them into ashes in an instant.
