Chapter 440: 7.13.4 Aftermath.

Originally, the plan was for Amir to protect the soldiers that carried the flamethrowers, but when they reached their job site, things took a turn for the worse pretty fast, as the population of ghouls exceeded their expectations.

’This can’t be.’ He thought, looking around these mindless monsters that jumped into the flames themselves.

As for those that can ignore the flames and stuff rushing toward them, they faced the blades of Hemant and Amir, who dispatched the ghouls cleanly, leaving a wriggling corpse in their wake. Which was to be expected, as the two were Master ranked knights, dispatching a few ghouls was simple for them.

But the issue was still the quantity of their enemies.

"The location of the closest nest has been determined... it’s two hundred feet at one o’clock." Although the trenches and the boulders that were put here to guard against the mortar and bullets were advantageous while fighting Yethel. Things changed pretty fast when these very overground tunnels were used by the ghouls to hide their tracks.

It was only through the maps that the logistics officer possessed and his experience that was he able to predict their direction.

So they followed, never daring to jump out of the trenches and doing their work as it was expected of them.

If this job was handed to a master-ranked Knight like Hemant or Amir, they could have easily reached the destination in a few seconds and dropped the explosive into the nest. But there was a reason why the Knights were conserving their strength while dealing with the ghouls. They feared a greater enemy, an enemy with a thought of their own.

The elites of Yethel might use this chaos to enter into the enemy lines and create further chaos. But what they didn’t know was that a weaker group had already been walking deeper towards the enemy lines.

Particular platoons of Yethel soldiers comprised a team of five jumped over the expected traps and walked over the mines that were deployed by their soldiers. But it didn’t mean that they could rush to their destination willy-nilly, there were always mages waiting to harm them. So they covered themselves in camo and hunched like turtles to hide from prying eyes one were not a mage of high caliber, it would be harder for these people to be discovered so easily.

As for the knights who had their superhuman senses active all the time, they couldn’t detect the feeble life force of mortals among the crazy amount of ghouls as well, so this was the perfect opportunity for mortal platoons to seek out the state of their enemies and do some preparatory work.

And that’s just what they did.

"Are you sure this would work?" I asked, looking at Henkle, who was the leader of our short group.

"It should work... otherwise, our country just sent us to the death." Henkle as always remained cold, containing little to no warmth in his words, but there was some sarcasm.

Being a lowly soldier, with only a basic level of literacy, Henkle was not aware of how most things worked, all he did was follow orders and believe in the words of his superior, as in his experience, that was the only way for him to survive to this day on the battlefield.

As for the specific subject we were talking about.

"See, one just moved right past your body, but didn’t border with us." The topic of the questions was none other than a special cream that all of us were forced to lather on our bodies. A cream containing a special pheromone that makes it ignore us.

These beasts were nocturnal anyway, lacking sight. Which made it far easier to fool them when half of their focus was directed toward the city of Durum, while the other half of their mind was confused with the sudden need to prostrate to the being that existed in that city.

To them, as long as no one is there to stop them, they won’t bother them. But if you antagonize them, their ravenous nature will surface, and you won’t be able to stop them at all.

So more than anything, this cream acted as more of a placebo for the soldiers, with barely any true function to speak of.

It’s much easier for them to believe in a nonsensical cream with added rules of what not to do than just rules that might put a seed of doubt in these foolish men.

And as we went deeper into the territory, it was then a missile flew over our head, followed by subsequent multiple missiles that lit up the sky. "Wha... what is that?" Some of the soldiers in our group had wondered this question, but even Henkle was speechless over it.

"Don’t think too much, whatever it is, they are on our side." He spoke before progressing deeper and deeper into the territory, sometimes he had to crawl on the ground with their body, while other times dragging their bodies through fences.

And before long, they came to a stop.

For ahead of them, although the path appeared simple, the truth was, that this was the most dangerous moment in their life.

"A minefield."

"Are you sure this is it?"

"This is the place... " The location appeared as a road, a path made to transport soldiers or supplies during the war, which might be the reason it was so flat.

But those experienced understood that this was a trap and if Henkle didn’t think wrong, not far from him, there must be some snipers in the hiding, aiming their scope in their direction.

"There are no covers from this point on." It was a death zone, impossible to cross unless you were a superhuman.

But they were not intending to cross it anyway.

"Hope that this works." Henkle gave the order and his men spread apart in a long line, dragging their bodies on the ground ever so slowly, not intending to make a sound.

Before each of them, including me took out a small cylinder and then the pin out of that said cylinder, causing it to create a slight ticking sound, which was a sign that it was activated.

"Let’s move." Then we slowly backed off and repeated the very same process in multiple areas. Hoping that none of us are found out.

But things are never so simple during the war. "You bastards... tell me... What was that just now...?" A sound came from above, which meant, there was a mage above them.

*****

Death is ever so simple.

"Am I to participate in this?" Farhad wondered, overlooking the corpse of a beast that was strewn on the table.

"Is this your first time seeing this?" To this question, Farhad nodded. This was the first time Farhad had seen a ghoul, specifically a dead ghoul which seemed to still be alive, from the looks of his wriggling flesh.

Which even astounded Priest Boman, who felt a bit disturbed seeing such bizarre movement of the beast.

But what many ignored was that there was something else in Farhad’s eye than confusion and disgust.

He felt a bit of pity as well.

Farhad got curious for a bit, he wondered what would happen if he were to touch this flesh.

But soon, he refused such random thoughts, there was something in his head telling him, that it would be better for him to stay away from these ghouls as much as he could.

No, it would seem it was part of a memory that belonged to Jester, that had warned Farhad from ever approaching a ghoul or their nests. ’Why the warning?’ He wondered for a bit, before looking at the corpse again, which had come to a stop after being showered by potent mana from Priest Boman’s body.

"It would seem, it’s only immune to the material methods, the light of our god is still capable of burning it." The Cardinal Light of the Red Sun, or the flames of Purity as they were called were unique to the church of Red Sun.

In simpler terms, they were the concentrated form of the first rays of sunlight from the morning that were capable of purifying even the greatest of the evil. And it was a light that was very dangerous to Farhad due to his very nature as an undead.

But Farhad never feared it for one reason only, the flames of Samadhi he possessed held somewhat of a similar aspect in it, but stronger and more potent. Nothing that came out of the first Knight was mediocre, including the flames inside Farhad.

"Well, there is nothing more to see, why don’t we meet with our collaborators." Things were serious at the moment, but Boman was not in a hurry. There was no need to rush things in a city that barely let any church take hold for decades.

So he was having fun while wasting as much time as he could, letting the other side get desperate for their help.

Or so would have happened, when multiple missiles exploded over their head, shaking the building and causing them to wonder in horror over what just happened.

Rushing outside, they found a bunch of Radiant Knights and soldiers looking toward the city of Durum, which was currently engulfed in flames.

If not for the shield to hold back the explosions, it would have been leveled by now.

"Had a legendary being made a move?" Priest Boman couldn’t help but wonder, before turning his eyes into the corner and finding similar explosions all over the sky.
