Chapter 421: 7.08.1 We messed up.

The nobles that were forcefully conscripted into the military were most of the time, the problem children.

Their parents had hoped that they might learn something from the hardship they suffered on the border. Some were forced there due to a crime they committed and this was a great way for them to redeem themselves.

But born with a golden spoon in their mouth and never facing any hardship in their life, it’s hard for these people to change their nature. And even in the barracks, they are considered a problematic bunch only capable of doing small things on the side, as no general would even depend on a spoiled child to do something important.

Of course, there are exceptions to such kind of nobles, there was a subset of highly talented ones that arrived here to make a name for themselves. But they were limited in numbers, not even exceeding a dozen, and usually due to their talent, they ended up attracting the problem children to them, who had hopes of rubbing off some of the achievements of these talented individuals and hence earning the right to return to their old life faster.

It’s why, among the Nobles, there were many curious about the talented prince who seemed to be appreciated by General Vera a lot. If they can follow him, who knows if the annoying missions that were thrown on them can be easily diverted to someone else?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful?

"Is this what they think of me?" Amir wondered, reading the report that was in his hand. "Leeches, the bunch of them." He read the report provided by Ludwig and was surprised to find a total of seven clichés formed around a total of seven talented commanders who hold noble identities.

Among these, there were only three individuals that Amir had to keep watch over. The older son of Duke Pulwas, a Mage going by the name of Qubair Pulwas from the Arcane line and master of the element of water and a defensive specialist.

The second who also had the biggest following was the daughter of Viscount Talhisi, who worked for Duke Wortham.

Her name was Sehra Talhisi, also a Mage from the Arcane line and master of dual elements of Earth and Air, who seemed to be ahead of Qubair through her achievement due to her spells capable of changing the face of the whole battlefield.

For the third, now this was one problematic individual that Amir seriously needed to take care of.

For he was none other than Ludwig’s very own brother, Lucious Von Bloodcrow.

A born monster as they say. He had reached the rank of Master at the young age of twenty-five and then stagnated for the next decade, showing no growth whatsoever.

The reason?

He got corrupt after being claimed as a Genius since his childhood, in his eyes, even with any effort, he would one day automatically enter the ranks of Grandmaster on his own, so why struggle like the rest of the surrounding plebs?

Instead, he forced himself on vices, enjoying life to the fullest before responsibilities fell upon his shoulders.

A man who really seemed to not care about the world around him and just lived to enjoy his life to the fullest.

But the report Amir received showed a different picture entirely.

"So he was sent here to suppress Ludwig?" No wonder Ludwig lacked any following even while holding complete control of his camp.

None dared to venture into his camp, not due to his incompetency or some other odd reason. But all of them were forced to ignore Ludwig’s existence due to his step-brother.

’The step-brother that probably is responsible for the multiple assassination attempts on him.’ Amir knew that this one was going to be troublesome. As from the reports, this Lucius seemed anything but normal.

"Were you aware of Prince Lucious? How is he considered among the lower-level soldiers?" Amir wondered if he would be able to learn something about this new cousin from Lavani. But all he got in return was just a shaking head. "He is in Camp Bloodwater, there is little to no interaction between us."

There were a total of forty-one camps established along the borders with Yethel, though Amir lived in none of them and instead lived in Camp Bravo which was established next to the barracks.

While his cousin Ludwig’s camp was just adjacent to his camp, making it easier for the two parties to interact with each other, as the distance that both had to travel was not much in comparison.

While Camp Bloodwater was situated a hundred kilometers away from the barracks, so it was easier to see why there was not much interaction between the two sides.

"The name Bloodwater doesn’t sound like something anyone in the Military would come up with... did its name change after his arrival?" Amir asked, but still got no answer in response. It would seem that there was little Lavani knew about the situation.

Which was to be expected. The way for nobles to control the lower masses is by keeping them ignorant. It’s why they can maintain an air of majesty around them by keeping things about their life a secret.

So it’s no wonder people will hide such details from someone of Lavani’s level.

’Ho, this is going to be troublesome.’

*****

And troublesome it was, as miles away in a camp, a man sat on his chair, smoking a piece of cigarette lit by none other than the Chief Commander of this camp, who maintained a servile attitude toward the almond-skinned man, white hearing the reports from his underling.

"It would seem that thick-skinned pig plans to drag an ignorant worm along with him," Lucius spoke, flicking his cigarette butt into the eyes of the report narrator, causing him to wince a bit, but the man didn’t stop and kept speaking what he had learned about Ludwig and his recent meetings with some unknown prince.

And when the report was done Lucius turned to the rest of the nobles on his table and asked. "I wonder what my fellow friends might be thinking?" There were a total of Five people on the table, aside from Lucius. And each of them came from a promising background with a bright future ahead of them.

That is if not for their crimes that were too cruel to be ignored and the only way for them to redeem themselves was on the border.

Sadly, for people like them. Few regiments would bother taking them in, not to mention, that there was no place for them in any camp who wished to maintain a level of unity among the soldiers.

Which finally forced these five to follow the only man that would accept them. The only man with power and authority who could suppress the eyes of disgust that were thrown their way by the aloof commanders.

Now though? The Chief Commander was nothing more than their servant.

Wasn’t this just wonderful?

"Prince Lucius, it’s obvious, isn’t it? The nerd prince was made a fool by the Pig Prince. I think the correct thing for us to do is to help the Nerd Prince realize his mistake." One among them spoke.

An idea that was soon supported by others, saying. "The Pig Prince probably chose camp Bravo for this reason alone, he would pick ignorant ones in his camp before they became aware of his status in the camps... his evil truly knows no bounds."

Their words were filled with worry about Amir.

They considered him a fool, an ignorant fool who knew nothing of the world and hence needed to be protected.

Otherwise, there would be people like Ludwig there to exploit him.

And they can see why Ludwig would want to do that. Because they wished to do the same with Amir as well.

’Why is General Vera so interested in this Prince?’ They have recently become aware of the special treatment this Prince gets from General Vera. How this new Prince never has to make any rounds and enjoys his time in the barracks and visits the palace of nerds Sector 32 from time to time.

That’s all he has to do and he still gets called by General Vera often and receives a treatment that these people can only dream of.

Which made them wonder, what made this nerdy Prince who didn’t even come with a Knight so special?

Was he really so talented? Could he be their chance to escape this boring place earlier?

Such thoughts came into their head and went soon after, as none of them dared to betray Lucius, nor did they hope to leave him. Not after their Lucius Seven became Lucius Six in a matter of weeks after one of their old members couldn’t handle the pressure and dared to leave their group.

He was considered kill in action, but everyone among the group knew what had transpired, but chose to remain quiet for their own safety.

But what would happen if a Prince-like Ludwig were to join their group as well?

A prince who seems to hold no interest in politics but seems to hold enough potential to be noticed by General Vera.

And if they were to borrow his reputation, they might just earn the right to escape from this place, while their boss Lucius might get an even better underling than them, who he can torment.

Yes, nothing was better than this.

It’s why all five unanimously had the same idea.

’I thought I was bad.’ One of them thought with a sigh, which he didn’t wish to display in front of Lucius.
