Chapter 384: TGoJ 6.14

Whether it was in my previous life, or the following unlife. One thing that never changed was my inability to truly feel fear.

Death never scared me, nor did the death of my close companions, all I felt when something bad happened was frustration and anger, but never fear.

For an undead being like me, fear itself held no power, as I have long overcome the greatest source of fear of all, death. Making it harder for me to come to grips with this emotion of fear.

It’s why, when showing my hatred for Remira due to the fate that her friends had brought me, I never appeared scared.

There was never fear on my face at that moment, nor is it now. So why.

Why would this woman who I had chosen to act as my champion would say something like this?

"Why would you ask me such a thing?" I asked, curious and a bit befuddled by her question. As she seemed to think that I was scared. Which I was definitely not.

"There is no shame in saying that you were scared... we never did talk about what happened after being shot in your heart that day." She said, showing some pity to me... no, the pity she showed was not to me, but to "Crow".

Yes, a misconception, it was definitely a misconception born out of a lack of understanding of me. Which was good, I guess?

"You think I was scared of her?" I asked, feeling a bit offended, which she caught on to pretty fast.

"Not scared of her, but scared of what might have happened if you were not lucky that day... I know it should be scary...." She genuinely appeared to be worried about me, which put me in a tough position.

I hadn’t expected a conversation to get so personal. I had come here expecting a lecture, where she would berate me for my offenses from before. Not this.

"Fine... I am fine, don’t worry...." I stopped her, seeing that she genuinely seemed to care, I also chose to abandon some parts of this drama and said some details straight away.

"The outburst from before was under the directions of our Master. He asked me to make sure we recover the mortal." As I spoke these words, it would appear as if she didn’t believe me completely and still thought that part of my outburst must be real. This made me a bit apprehensive about my decision to make her the new leader of Team 2.

But she was going to become one no matter what, as I as Crow was still learning to do.

"You received his order, and you chose to inform me beforehand?" She asked, curious over why I made such a choice and not tell her beforehand. But when I explained how he had asked me to do such a thing she turned silent.

"Part of the test I guess, he wanted to see how you would react with those two..." I informed her how Jester gave me certain lines and assumptions beforehand. Including the Pet bit, which I didn’t understand completely, but it still became useful from the looks of it.

And Sheva bought it without any questions. As she thought it was impossible for Crow to come with his prior retorts on his own, there should be some help. Which was now finally explained.

But in the end, she still ended up saying that if I felt scared, just come to her.

It feels a bit weird, I am not going to lie.

"Now the important bit is, why would Master want that woman?" Sheva had promised Remira that she would protect Number Two. So how could she let anything happen to her now that she had confirmed that her Master was interested in this woman?

’Let’s just learn who she is after we set sail.’

After the conversation was over, which included some more words that made Sheva request for a timeout. I walked out of her room and saw the bodies being moved from the hidden pier. "What are you doing?" I asked one of the slavers. Who appeared a bit confused, before telling me that one of the other ’Masters’ had ordered him to do so.

"Hah, don’t worry, ignore the bodies and transfer the food and items on the ship. Only enough to last for our journey, no more than that."

There was no need to take care of these bodies, they would rot and mummify soon enough with all this salt in the air. Not to mention, it’s not like we are going to come to this place in the future.

Instead, this place will go to be raided soon enough. ’This reminds me... a gift.’ As if thinking of something fun, I ordered a member of Team One to do something fun, before entering the place where the slaves were kept.

Which currently amounts to just Three individuals.

"Good job Paradi, you just earned back your life," I said to him who appeared a bit lifeless with barely any smile on his face. "What... What happened?... Do you think I am lying?"

"No... no not at all Mister Crow. I was just worried due to that woman... she might bring us disaster," he said, pointing toward my cute Selene with her flesh mask.

"And why do you think so?" I asked, curious over why Paradi would come to such a conclusion.

Wait, did he have a way to even look past such a strong hex that completely seals Selene’s true nature? No way, did I really stumble upon some prime gold vein?

"Just look at her... anyone in her position should be filled with fear and begging for mercy. If not that, there should be a hint of fear concerning one’s future or ignorant pride that makes one fearless."

"But she shows none of such emotions... she seemed a bit too."

"Don’t talk about me as if I am not here." She said while walking closer to the cage. "Crow is it?... I can’t wait to see our positions reversed." She said, appearing confident in her words, which made me laugh.

"Lady, don’t expect any leniency just because of your connections. Miss Sheva won’t be able to save you for long." I laughed out loud, as I opened her cage. "But for now, how about some proper game I caught this morning?" I asked with a smile, and under the confused gaze of Paradi, Selene also smiled as she said. "I am famished for something fresh."

"Huh?"

******

Let’s go back to an hour ago when I was still having my discussion with Sheva.

"Yethel’s undercover agent?"

"That’s what I was told about... " There was no need to expose Selene’s background, as it would cause even greater questions to be put forward. So for now, the most I spoke about was how she was an intelligence operative working directly for Yethel’s intelligence service, and not Jester.

"As I said before, the primary mission was to recover her in any way possible. And I succeeded at it." Recover was the keyword, it means that the object or individual already belonged to Jester or any affiliated organization, and we were just taking our things or people back.

"This is too much... if she worked for Yethel, why help Remira g... Forget that I asked.’ The meeting itself was proof that all of it was premeditated, so it was easy to see what mission that woman might have had.

However, what made her frustrated was the very fact that Remira had been fooled so thoroughly.

So much so that she even went ahead and put a powerful mental ward on Selene.

Just what is Jester’s plan and how was he able to achieve this?

"Should I call her? For answers?"

"No, just feed her for now... and don’t tell others about her true identity. We will have the rest of the conversation on the ship."

Which made the current scene possible. Making many among our group curious about why did I bring this woman to our dining table.

"Just focus on eating, this is the last bit of fresh food we will eat for a month at least..." And with these words of Sheva, all of them went back to focus on their last good meal.

After that, nothing important happened.

We climbed the ship, and it departed around 1 of the night.

*****

"This is wrong... we shouldn’t have let her go so easily." Frustrated was written all over Farhad’s face as he crushed the stomach of a tree with his claw-like hands. "I, I would have easily held them back while the two of you made an escape and asked for help." He said in frustration, forgetting about the sniper that could have killed the two escapees easily if they had tried as such.

Which was the reason why they were forced to this point to begin with.

"Don’t think harder, we are out, and you should go back to your ho..."

"I can’t go back."

Remira took a sigh in frustration.

She can see why Farhad had become like this. Well, Farhad had told her before.

"He said that as long as I don’t go back, he won’t ever touch my family again." It was a promise he made with Jester in order to ensure his family’s survival. Which had been his driving force for long after learning what had happened to the other families whose members dared to participate in Ikaros Yethel’s assassination.

Which is why, Farhad can’t go back, not to his home at least.

"You think he will keep his promise?"
