Chapter 158: 3.07.3 Unexpected changes.

It was not a trap made for him, which was a bit unexpected. Due to this, the situation called for some change in plans. He never would have assumed that someone would attack Krugal the same day as him. Though with some thinking it was not hard to assume what was what.

Though still a bit unsure, any oddity was considered proof in his eyes, and an attack on this level was much weirder. What made his assumptions even more sure was the event with the driver.

A bit guilty over the death of an innocent man who obviously had a family like how he used to have one. It still proved that on the way here, the original Driver was swapped for some reason. And from the looks of it, the one attacking these men is the same driver, who came back in clothes similar to his own, holding a blade that matches the shape of his hand as well.

’This can’t be.’ As if coming to an understanding, he looked to the sky and followed this driver back into the house, walking close by and seeing what he had done.

Oddly enough, he didn’t kill the boy and ignored him, irrevocably saving the life of Sheva, who wouldn’t stand a chance in direct confrontation. ’He just came to shut up the link.’ This is what Max understood.

Meaning the enemy was on guard and had learned someone was hunting them, or at least looking for them. This is why the a need to cut off the tail. Which Max doesn’t wish to see happen?

And besides, if the Jester’s words were to be believed, then the whole family of Smeltver needs to suffer. And for that, Krugal needs to stay alive.

"Sheva knocks the kid out, our enemy is a Master level."

"From the looks of it, even the boy’s old man is a knight, just a weaker one."

"A welcome surprise, this means he can eke out a survival against the attacks of the assassin." Otherwise, with just the bodyguard in support, Krugal would have long been dead by now.

But currently, he along with his bodyguard was fighting their own driver. An odd reality that was weirder the more one thinks. Causing many questions to pop up in Max’s mind.

Questions, whose answers he was looking forward to.

"Give me some support after you are done with the boy." With those words, he rushed to the scene. Reaching the crashed floor of the house and the fight going on between the two parties. ’Still weird, no matter how you look at it.’ He still couldn’t feel any powerful vigor from this driver. He still looked like a common human to him even now.

But how would a common human deal with two adept-level figures on his own?

Something didn’t make sense. Nor do they have to. The fight came first and he started to assess the combat strength of all the parties and made his own mind on how to deal with his enemies.

Striking the driver first would be stupid, he would be ganged up by the two dwarfs. ’The bodyguard it is.’

Putting poison back on his dagger, Max took out a vial of Armor shredding acid. As the two Knights were covered in high-quality armor already which seems to be a common tool among the dwarfs. An armor that is equipped with a single click of a button.

’I need one.’ He thought with a joke while throwing the vial of acid toward the back of the bodyguard. Who was caught off guard by the attack?

"There is one more. Didn’t expect them to send more." Cursed Krugal, but Max just smiled from the darkness after changing his position.

Then counting till seven, he got out of his cover and kicked the back of the bodyguard, causing the Bodyguard to take an extra step forward and come to a halt. "What kind of feeble attack was this?" he wondered in his mind, even thinking if the other party really was sent here from those people.

Though none of that mattered, he reacted instinctively to the attack, swiping his giant axe to the backside, causing the bastard to run and hide in the broken house once again. "Gelith...?"

"No worries sir, keep focusing on this one. The other one is feeble." Gelith, the bodyguard explained, after making sure he was not targeting again.

"Hah, so these things are smart enough to use harassment tactics. This one is probably new." Confusing words from the mouth of Krugal, which Max just noted down in his head and waited for his poison to work.

As he had expected, the next swing of the bodyguard named Gelith was much weaker than before, his breathing was heavy and he struggled to exchange blows with the fast-moving assassin in front of him.

Bang bang dhuck, sounds came and Gelith was thrown to the side causing worry to prop up on Krugal’s face.

"Don’t be happy so early." Knowing that there was another one of ’its’ kind hiding in the darkness, Gelith would probably lose life if left unguarded while he recovers. So in a hurry, he aimed a small mechanical gun that was attached to his arm and then fired it.

"*Boom." An explosion, an explosion so big that it would attract many eyes to this house. But Krugal didn’t care.

It was already much harder to keep his real strength a secret to this day, which became useful as it actually did increase his chances of survival with his employers underestimating him and only sending one of the stronger ones.

But now, he didn’t even care for the multitudes of munitions he had kept hidden all this time. Nor did he care about the amount of eyes he might attract here, which would put not only his but his innocent son’s life in jeopardy as well.

Though he believed that his son was a dead man if he died anyways, so why not stay with him in this life by surviving this attack?

"You bastard, you fucking forced me." Taking out another giant bullet and lodging it inside the mechanical gun in his hand, he walked to Gelith while ready to fire his gun once again. But no one attacked him anymore.

"Old friend, you have faced stronger opponents. Don’t fail me now." Krugal tried to lift Gelith up. But he couldn’t. It was as if Gelith was dead. "Your eyes, they still move." To knights, darkness was not much of an issue, so he could see the flickery and even feel the breathing of his friend. Meaning he was very much alive.

But for some reason, he couldn’t move.

"Was it a spine injury?" Krugal wondered, before sighing and saying. "Act dead, close your eyes. I will kill the two rats and bring my son. I know a few people that can help you." Smeltvers never had their own bloodline, they had obtained their bloodline through intermarriage. Making it harder to accurately define what kind of powers his opponent might have.

So Max remained in darkness, wary of the hand cannon attached to Krugal’s armor and looking toward the "human" level figure who was biding its time and using the smoke to hide its existence.

"I know you are not dead, you and your friend."

"And you should know I am not easy to silence. I have done what you asked and this is how you treat me. But, I know this was going to happen anyway."

"Just go tell your master. I will disappear from this city, from this country. I am ready to sign a contract in return for assurance of my safety."

"Leave me alone, leave my family alone. It would already be harder to explain what happened here today to the police. I wonder if you wish to make it a bigger matter."

"As the next round is something you are very familiar with and I don’t intend to use it here, as you know what might happen if I do."

At those words, Max could finally see a change in the assassin’s behavior. Before it had been sitting, hiding in the cloud of dust and ready to pounce at Krugal. Now it was much more casual and silently walked out from the dust and stood in front of Krugal.

"Master did say something like this might happen." Spoke the man in a broken voice. A voice that Max had heard a few times before. But now that he heard it again, he didn’t like its tone.

Not one bit.

And his reason for this was simple.

’I messed up.’ He thought to himself.

"But the master also said to first eliminate the third party. In his own words."

"Few rats have snuck in, it’s your job to eliminate them."

I wanted to laugh.

Laugh at Max’s bad luck.

He came here to save his enemy and ended up being pitted instead.

How can one’s luck be so bad? It almost reminds me of a certain man I had met in the past.

But unlike that man, Max had someone with him.

"Eliminate us?... I will eliminate your child before you do anything." Sheva came to the rescue. Her Knife is deeply embedded into Krotal’s jugular.
