Chapter 49: A dangerous situation.
Wei Li’s body hung pierced by the arrow, refusing to fall to the ground.
The force of the strike was so great that the arrow was deeply embedded in the tree.
"We’re under attack! Get down and don’t move from your spots!" Ray Kang shouted mentally to all his team members.
Everyone gripped their bows and arrows tightly, ready for what was coming.
Their heartbeats quickened, and their bodies trembled.
At this point, even if they wanted to run, many of them wouldn’t be able to move—paralyzed by fear.
"Don’t tell me Wei Li is dead," Jin Chao thought, and his heart sank even further.
The death of his comrade crushed what little fighting spirit he had left.
Wei Tong moved closer to his partner, and the two of them tried to shield each other.
Their hands were trembling.
They were surrounded by darkness from all directions, with no idea where the enemy was—or how many there were.
"Kogan," Mei Lan remembered.
She looked around but saw no sign of him.
During their split, some had stayed close to their partners by chance, while others had ended up separated by distance.
"I hope he doesn’t move from his spot," Mei Lan wished she was next to Kogan, so she could protect him.
If something were to happen to him tonight, it would be the end for her.
"Wei Li has been hit. Most likely, they targeted him because of his voice. Get down and try not to make any sound," Ray Kang reminded them.
He knew that Wei Li had been killed, but he didn’t want to tell them directly — it would only spread fear.
During the previous ambush, while they were returning from the camp, many of them had been killed.
In this squad now, only Ray Kang, his partner, Kogan, Mei Lan, and a few others had survived that massacre.
That’s why they could be considered slightly more experienced than the others.
"Kogan, don’t move from your position. I’ll circle around from the other side to distract them," Ray Kang relayed his plan to Kogan.
He spoke to Kogan almost as an equal, since they were both in the first rank — although Ray Kang was at a higher level within it.
"Kogan! ... Kogan!" Ray Kang called out after receiving no response from him.
"What is he doing? Tsk, he could’ve been a great help," Ray Kang gritted his teeth.
If Kogan had been trained as a First Rank from the start, then even if he was deaf, he could have offered at least some help in this situation.
But now, the burden fell entirely on Ray Kang, and he knew he couldn’t afford to fail this time in protecting his team members.
’Wei Li is injured!’ Mei Li trembled.
She was overwhelmed with panic.
She hadn’t been trained for combat. Even if she had learned some basic techniques, in the end, it all came down to the first strike.
The one who attacked first would be the one to take control of the situation.
"Don’t tell me I’m going to die here."
Two streams of tears slid down her soft cheeks.
"No... worse than that, how is Wei Li?"
She looked toward where Wei Li had fallen—but how could she see anything in this darkness?
She couldn’t bear it. She wanted to know how he was.
"Wei Li, are you okay?" she whispered weakly.
"No," Ray Kang raised his head.
Whoosh!
An arrow pierced deep into the tree trunk.
"Just as I thought... the one targeting us is a First Rank. Could it be Liu Jian?" Ray Kang wondered.
Mei Li had whispered so softly that even the nearby members hadn’t heard her—
Yet the attacker had fired an arrow directly at her.
That meant the attacker had sharp senses—
which also explained the strength behind his strikes.
"We’re in trouble," Ray Kang frowned.
Mei Li’s eyes widened in sheer terror.
A strong hand was pressed against her mouth, while another arm was wrapped tightly around her.
She turned her head slightly to see who it was.
Medium-length black hair, and eyes with a strange hue—a blend of black and yellow.
Who else could it be but her saving angel—Kogan.
The arrow had been aimed directly at her head—
but at the very last moment, Kogan pulled her away.
A white light flared briefly from Kogan’s hand, then vanished instantly.
At the same time, a deadly arrow shot toward them with terrifying speed.
But Kogan dodged and pulled Mei Li with him at the last second.
’This guy is incredibly precise,’ Kogan thought.
He released Mei Li and looked at her.
"Wei Li is dead. If you don’t want to die too, do not make a single sound."
He transmitted the message to her mentally.
Mei Li was stunned by what she had just heard.
"Wei Li... is dead. Dead!"
Her lips trembled, and her eyes were bloodshot from crying.
What did that mean?
"Captain, what do we do now?" Kogan transmitted.
"Why didn’t you answer me earlier?" Ray Kang felt a wave of worry.
"I moved. I found Mei Li—we’re together now," Kogan explained.
"Mei Li?" Ray Kang was slightly surprised. "So... she’s alive."
When she whispered earlier toward Mei Li, Ray Kang heard her and also heard the arrow pierce through—so he assumed Mei Li was either killed or at least injured.
"As I said before, I’m moving from the side, and when I find the chance, I’ll strike. Then you’ll escape away from the noise."
"But the problem is, I don’t know how many there are. It could be a whole gang surrounding us. Also, their leader will be constantly on the move, which makes finding him difficult," Ray Kang explained.
He faced two problems: first, not knowing the number of enemies,
and second, not knowing their location.
As a captain, he had to find the gang leader attacking them—or at least locate a First Rank individual—so he could suppress the greatest threat,
while his team dealt with the rest of the gang.
