Chapter 514: Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing

Xu Feng was surprised at how quickly time had passed and how life seemed to be moving at a speed he couldn’t keep up with. Time was always elusive, but according to his new chauffeurs, his math hadn’t been adding up at all.

The apocalypse had begun almost two years ago. It was about two months until that two-year marker, which meant it was the end of September, and the chill in the air made so much more sense. It was fall, and winter was on its way.

The men had spoken about how harsh last winter was and asked about his plans for surviving the cold season, but Xu Feng ignored them. These two idiots were not his friends; he knew that they knew that, but they somehow believed he was some pushover they could manipulate.

Xu Feng rolled his eyes, refocusing on the passage of time. With his new understanding, he now realized he had been "asleep" for over two months. That was when this group of ruffians had last seen "Zee," or Xu Zeng.

According to them, they had parted ways during a zombie attack and had been coming back to this location whenever they could to see if they could locate Zee, their good "friend."

Xu Feng rolled his eyes again.

The two henchmen didn’t realize that Xu Feng knew exactly what they were up to. They were no friends of his brother. Instead, they wanted to make sure the ability user they had used as bait was dead and wouldn’t be a future problem for them.

Instead, they found the ability user’s brother, who looked similar enough to be kin but had differences in speech and facial features.

Xu Feng forced himself to focus on the real, important information. He had been "dead" in Donghua for nearly ten weeks now.

How were Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang coping with his death? How were his children doing? Were Xu Si, Xu San, and Xu Hu Zhe okay? He had left so many behind, and his brother had to clean up his mess.

Xu Feng sighed aloud, and the two men flinched ever so slightly, but Xu Feng could feel their tension rising again. He didn’t care about their feelings. The two men, Zhang Wei and Li Hao, were useful for now, but they weren’t nice people, and even now, they were plotting against him.

It was clear they were trying to bait him into returning to the base so he could be easily dealt with.

He hadn’t lived in this new apocalyptic world for long, but his imagination seemed to align with how society had changed. There were new rules in these bases where survivors congregated, and these men were part of the same group as the other man and Ling Ling.

While they might not see eye to eye with that pair anymore, Xu Feng was a threat to them, too. They were hoping to use him and get rid of him before he realized they had plotted against his brother.

Their power was centered in their home base, the Aran Base—a stronghold that spanned the small suburb of the former Aran upper-class housing district. Xu Feng knew where the district was; it should be around four hours away from Xu Zeng’s makeshift base.

Well, that was under normal circumstances. Under normal conditions, with no zombies, that was how long it would take to travel between the two locations—the Aran district and the agricultural school.

Xu Feng wasn’t heading to Zeng’s base, though. He was currently, "foolishly," letting the two men drive him to Aran Base.

After saving the two from the zombie cat that had trapped them in the basement of the Piggy grocery store and bandaging their wounds—neither had turned into zombies, so they shouldn’t be infected by the cat—he gained their trust enough for them to think they could con him.

Instead of being grateful for his life-saving grace, Zhang Wei and Li Hao had been trying to get information on where he and Zee lived.

They had dealt with Xu Zeng several times, but his residence wasn’t at Aran Base, and it was clear they wanted to usurp the hidden home Xu Zeng had built by getting the information from Xu Feng. Xu Feng rolled his eyes again as one of the men began to pry for information once more.

"Our great Xuan benefactor," Zhang Wei said, trying to sound sincere. Xu Feng had told them his name was Xuan. Yes, he wasn’t very creative, using his lovers’ surname as his fake name, but no one would ever know!

"We were only able to safely escape under your watch. After we return to Aran Base and collect our belongings, we will be forever indebted to you and will live our lives serving you!"

After Zhang Wei spoke, Li Hao followed up with more flattery.

"Wei is right, we are more than willing to work like a cow and horse for you and your brother." The way his eyes shifted after he said the word "brother" made Xu Feng’s brows twitch. It was obvious the two were being untruthful, but in their eyes, they were pulling the wool over Xu Feng’s.

It irritated him to think how they had managed to con his little brother with such half-assed flattery. Xu Feng leaned back in his seat, crossing his arms as he listened to their exaggerated promises.

He was unsure exactly how Zeng had interacted with these men before, but he did remember his brother having containers filled with purified water. Maybe Xu Zeng was trading with someone at the base for resources? Maybe it was these men he traded with?

Ability users seemed to be treated well at Aran Base, although these idiots had eventually plotted against Xu Zeng.

As they continued driving, the roadways were strangely quiet, the streets empty except for the occasional group of wandering zombies that excitedly followed the car.

Xu Feng watched them through the window, his gaze steady and calm. He was relaxed in the back seat of the sedan, while Zhang Wei and Li Hao were visibly uncomfortable in the front.

The car they were in was hot-wired, a skill that Xu Feng assumed one of them had learned out of necessity in this new world. The sedan was old but functional, and it served its purpose well enough for now after they siphoned gas into it from other nearby cars.

As they drove through the quiet streets, Xu Feng took note of the scenery. The once bustling suburb was now a ghost town, its buildings and homes deserted looking, windows shattered, and streets littered with debris.

The world had become a husk of its former self, stripped of life and filled with danger.

He glanced at Zhang Wei and Li Hao, who were now whispering to each other, their voices low and conspiratorial. Xu Feng could hear what they were saying, but he continued to play dumb. They were trying to figure out how to deal with him once they reached the base or if they should have him lead them to his home first.

They thought they were clever, but Xu Feng had seen their type before...he had read about their type before. They were wolves in sheep’s clothing, pretending to be harmless while they planned their next move.

Xu Feng’s lips curled into a small smile as he looked out the window, the landscape passing by in a blur. Some roadways were pilled up with abandoned cars, while others had been purposefully moved by some sort of force. The pathway they used was carefully chosen.

As they approached the Aran district, Xu Feng’s mind shifted gears. He needed to be ready. Whatever awaited him at the base, he had to be prepared.

He’d wanted to make more stops along the way, but the men weren’t in good condition to battle any unplanned zombies, and they needed Xu Feng in good condition to protect them before they reached safety.

The few places they’d stopped at were at Xu Feng’s insistence, and even then, they’d refused to step out of the car to help. That was okay with Xu Feng, it just meant he could put away things in his space without a second thought, and bloody his pipe up a little more.
