Chapter 511: Zombies Are Great!

Navigating the mess was a challenge on its own. Debris littered the floors—overturned shelves, scattered food items, broken glass. Xu Feng moved carefully, and his steps were deliberate and measured. He couldn’t afford to make too much noise, but thankfully, the men’s half-hearted search created enough background noise to cover any minor slips he made.

Their careless rummaging worked to his advantage, masking the occasional crunch of something underfoot or the soft scrape of his feet against the floor. He needed to find a way out of this building before the men realized they weren’t alone.

Also, he needed shoes, but that was a secondary problem. As long as he didn’t puncture skin, all was well, right?

As he crept along the aisles, Xu Feng’s thoughts drifted back to his brother. What had Xu Zeng been up to that he would cross paths with such unsavory people? How had he become entangled with these dangerous men?

The last time he’d been in this zombie paradise, Xu Zeng seemed to be doing fine, living in seclusion in his own little bunker. What had brought him to this grocery store basement? Why did these men seem to be looking for his brother?

The questions gnawed at him, but they would have to wait until he was somewhere safer, somewhere he could think clearly.

As he carefully maneuvered through the store, his eyes caught sight of something on the floor—a fallen piece of treasure! It was a lone, forgotten piece of underwear. Xu Feng’s eyebrows shot up in surprise.

He wasn’t sure about the size, and it was clearly women’s underwear, the lacy kind, but beggars couldn’t be choosers. In his current state, anything was better than nothing.

He quickly scooped up the small treasure, tucking it away for the moment. The bundled lacy garment wasn’t much, but it was a start.

Ignoring his nakedness for now, Xu Feng refocused on the task at hand. He had to keep moving, had to keep his life first. Xu Feng quickened his pace, careful not to make any sudden noises that might alert the men. The closer he got, the more he could feel the tension ease from his body. He was almost there, almost out.

As he neared the exit, a faint noise behind him made him want to freeze. His heart skipped a beat as he listened but continued to move forward.

He strained to determine if it was just the men still searching or if something more sinister was creeping up on him. The sound was faint, almost imperceptible, but Xu Feng’s instincts told him not to ignore it.

If a zombie jumped out of nowhere, he might actually welcome it if the man-eater could distract the two men.

Xu Feng slowly turned his head, eyes scanning the dark aisles behind him. The store was silent, except for the occasional creak of the building settling and the distant sounds of the men rummaging on both floors.

But that noise—what was it? Xu Feng’s pulse quickened as he considered the possibility of an actual zombie lurking in the shadows or maybe even a third person who had been waiting in the wings.

He couldn’t afford to linger. Gathering his courage, Xu Feng picked up his pace toward the exit sign, his heart pounding in his chest. He pushed the door open just enough to slip through, the cold air from outside hitting his face like a splash of reality.

The world beyond was quiet for the moment, the back alley deserted except for the stray pieces of trash blowing in the wind.

Xu Feng didn’t hesitate. He stepped into the alley, pulling the door shut behind him as quietly as possible. The ’fresh’ air was a welcome change from the air in the grocery store, but the smell didn’t get better. It actually got worse.

He took a shallow breath, steadying himself as he surveyed his surroundings.

The alley was narrow, lined with dumpsters and crates, with a few possible hiding spots should he need them. At one end was the open street leading back to the front of the store, and the other end led to what looked like the actual back of the grocery store, where there would be additional parking spots. He had actually exited from a side door.

The back parking lot seemed to be the safer option, but Xu Feng was still naked and without shoes. He wasn’t some amazing car thief who could hot-wire a car and make a speedy getaway into the sunset.

Across the alley was the doorway to another store.

From the outside, you couldn’t tell what was in the store, but it would put some distance between him and the men searching for him. With a bit of a running start, Xu Feng ran and thudded against the door, but it only shook a bit.

Pausing briefly to see if anyone heard him, Xu Feng was about to try again, but instead, he reached out and turned the doorknob.

Click.

The door opened outward with little resistance. Xu Feng couldn’t help but roll his eyes before walking into the store quickly and locking the door behind him promptly.

His chest was rising and falling with this teeny bit of action. He really wasn’t meant for this type of adventure... but he was a dad now! He had the courage to fight for his family!

After his mini pep talk, Xu Feng could only smile to himself and perk his ears for any signs of movement in his new location.

With a small pause and no signs of movement in the dim back entryway, Xu Feng took advantage of the moment to put on his brand-new lacy undies.

"Not bad," he whispered to himself. They fit just right, if not a bit scratchy, but at least he wasn’t baring his all to the zombies...

Being back in the modern world made everything seem to rush back to him. His next instinct was to flip the switch to his right.

Flick.

Flick, flick, flick.

The power was out. It made sense, but somehow, Xu Feng was still a bit aggravated.

With a sigh, he made the decision to move further away from the piggy grocery store. With pipe in hand and ears perked, he moved through the side entrance into the store... it was a bookstore. No clothes.

The books were nice, but he needed clothes. Xu Feng wasn’t sure what time of year it was, but it was chilly. Underwear was only the bare minimum. He needed shoes and clothes, and if he was making a list, a danbao would be nice, a baseball bat or two, and lots of seeds!

For a brief moment, Xu Feng allowed himself to relax. He had made it out of the grocery store, and for now, it seemed like he was safe, but while zombies were less scary than humans, he wasn’t crazy enough not to be cautious.

Xu Feng moved through the dimly lit bookstore, shelves towering around him, filled with dusty books that no one had touched in a long time. The smell in here was much less nasty. It didn’t seem like any humans or zombies had been in here for some time.

The air was musty, the silence oppressive, but there was something comforting about being surrounded by books. They reminded him of his past life, of simpler times when he could lose himself in stories rather than being trapped in one.
