Chapter 492: The Adopted Child

Chapter 492: The Adopted Child

Feeling a soft touch on his temple, Xu Feng stirred slightly to see Yang leaning over him, his expression tender and caring. The kiss planted on his temple was a gentle reassurance, a silent understanding passing between them.

His Yang could be quite cold to others, but that was a more recent development. The Yang he knew from the past always had a smile on his face, at least he was always smiling when Jian was present. Sometimes, they would start out their relationship on not-so-great terms, but his smile would eventually shine on Xu Feng too.

It had always been like that. He could always melt their snake’s heart. Xu Feng smiled slightly, even as his body seemed to protest the motion.

"I know this isn’t real," Yang began softly, his voice filled with that annoying sadness again, "but please give me permission..."

Xu Feng waited for the man to continue, but he seemed to lose his courage along the way. "Permission?" He helped even as his eyes threatened to shut.

"With Jian... give us permission..."

Xu Feng blinked, feeling a wave of confusion wash over him at the unexpected request that seemed half-finished. Forcing his brain to fill in the gaps would be tedious normally, but it was even more difficult as sleep called his name oh so enchantingly.

Despite his weariness, he searched Yang’s eyes for any hint of doubt or hesitation. But all he found was a deep longing, a yearning for something that seemed just out of reach.

"Always," Xu Feng replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "I was the interloper. You never need my permission. I only wish I could watch."

With those words hanging in the air, Xu Feng’s eyelids grew heavy, his body succumbing to the call of sleep. He wasn’t sure if he answered the right question, but there was nothing he wouldn’t allow "them" to do. Well, there wasn’t anything that came to mind that they might need his permission for that he would be against.

As he drifted off into slumber, he felt a sense of peace wash over him, knowing that even in his exhaustion, he had given his blessing to the ones he loved. A feeling of wanting to return home seemed to bubble up from nowhere, barely controlled by his drowsiness.

"I missed you Feng Feng. I miss you."

"Hmmm." They were together at that moment, but for some reason, Xu Feng missed him too.

As he lay there, feeling the warmth of Yang’s body against his own, a sense of comfort washed over him. Yet, despite their closeness, a lingering sense of longing tugged at his heartstrings.

Perhaps if Yang held him even closer if their bodies were pressed together in every way possible, that nagging feeling would dissipate.

"I’ll take care of our family. I’ll make you proud. You’ll never need to worry," Yang’s voice broke through the silence, filled with determination and love.

A soft smile graced Xu Feng’s lips. "I’m already proud," he murmured in response, his voice barely above a whisper.

In that quiet moment, Xu Feng could sense something unspoken, a weight carried in Yang’s words, a thickness in his voice followed by a nasally sound. The arm around his waist tightened, anchoring him in place.

Any movement felt almost impossible, his body weighed down by exhaustion and Yang’s strength. He couldn’t help but think, ’This body is a bit troublesome.’ Even if Yang and Jian liked his smell, the body wasn’t as strong.

Yang’s next words caught him off guard, stirring a sense of curiosity within him. "You failed to mention that your brother is quite... peculiar," he remarked, prompting Xu Feng to furrow his brow in confusion.

"Brother?" Xu Feng echoed, the word ringing in his ears.

Yes, he had indeed heard correctly. Yang spoke of Xu Zeng, promising to care for him as his own brother. As the realization sank in, Xu Feng quirked his lips in a small grin. Zeng was always willful.

The snake’s reassurance that he would return from Jinghua as quickly as possible brought a sense of relief, mingled with a hint of sadness at the thought of him parting ways with their Nanshan Estate.

"I’ll watch over Xu Zeng better, and the two dragons," Yang vowed.

"A snake tending to a nest of dragons..." Xu Feng couldn’t suppress a giggle at the image that formed in his mind. But deep down, he knew that if anyone could handle such a task, it was his Yang.

"... hatch the children..." Yang was still talking, but Xu Feng could only hear keywords here and there. His time was running out, but the word hatch was clearly heard. He needed to help hatch the children. That was very important.

"If you leave, will you still visit me like this? It took an entire moon phase to have a dream like this..."

"Hmmm...Yes, I will always find you... In every lifetime I will find you... Jian... When I can, I will find you both..."

Xu Feng wasn’t even sure of what he was promising anymore. In fact, he wasn’t really sure what he was saying from the beginning. His thoughts seemed to pour from several different sources, all his lives vying to answer with their shared and unique knowledge without checking with him first.

He just hoped he made sense to Yang.

"I love you, Xu Feng."

"Love... you..."

As Xu Feng drifted, he found himself reliving a memory he vaguely remembered, a time he shouldn’t have remembered, yet there he was, reliving the moment he was "adopted."

The voices of his parents, their tones filled with uncertainty and determination, echoed in his mind.

"I thought you wanted to name him Dong Bo?" his father’s voice broke the silence, a hint of confusion and frustration lacing his words.

"Mother said, Xu Feng. His name is Xu Feng, the spirits agree," his mother’s voice responded, firm and resolute, echoing the wisdom of her mother. She had left the village to live in town with her husband, but she knew the old ways were not obsolete.

Those who were gifted were just that, gifted. Their wisdom should not be ignored.

A debate ensued, his father questioning the decision to give him his mother’s surname, while his mother stood steadfast in her conviction.

"He would take his mother’s surname? He isn’t going to take my surname? Wouldn’t that be strange? He will already be an adopted child if he doesn’t take my Sur—" The man started to justify why Xu Feng should take the surname Sun, but the woman cut in.

"Yes, mother knows best about these things." Her voice was even firmer this time, she believed in her mother’s judgment. They hadn’t even called her mother to tell her they found a child and wanted to adopt him. She was the one who called them! How would she dare to call the child anything other than Xu Feng?

His mother looked over at the child on the bed with an unknown look in her eyes. Xu Feng also observed himself as a child, asleep on the bed, his innocent face peaceful in slumber. He was just a small boy, barely two or three years old, yet there was a sense of fearlessness about him, a courage that didn’t reflect his tender age.

As his parents deliberated over his name, Xu Feng couldn’t help but marvel at the scene unfolding before him. He was witnessing the moment he was welcomed into a loving family.

"We live in the twenty-second century, we can’t be so superstitious!" his father argued, his voice tinged with uncertainty, yet a hint of reverence as he gazed down at his sleeping son.

But his mother stood firm, "I think we should go with that name. Xu Feng, doesn’t it suit him?"

The two watched the boy who slept so sweetly in a foreign place. His dark hair against unblemished skin. It seemed surreal for a child they found wandering around in the bushes stark naked.

He was nice and plump, not like an orphaned or abandoned child, yet... how had her mother called right at the correct time, warning them not to take him to the police station?

All children were registered at birth, but they would need to register "their" son late...

His father finally relented. "Hmmm, it does feel right," he conceded defeat almost too easily. He would let Xu Feng keep his grandmother’s surname, and they would keep Xu Feng. They always wanted a child, but his mother was infertile. The heavens had given them a gift, they shouldn’t question it.

That was the first memory Xu Feng remembered, one he shouldn’t reasonably remember at all. A memory in the third person, one that happened while he slept, yet he remembered it clear as day, and watching it from this detached perspective felt right.

Dong Bo might be a good name, but the name clearly wasn’t for him, Xu Feng was just right. His grandmother had made the correct choice.
