Chapter 425: Is It Too Late to Apologize?
Lee Hua stood shakily in the corner of the dimly lit courtyard, the weight of his past bearing down on him like an oppressive fog. Memories of rejection and betrayal swirled in his mind, each one a painful reminder of his own inadequacy in the eyes of his family.
In his moment of need, shame, and deep vulnerability, they treated him like a stranger, their coldness cutting him to the core.
As he unwillingly replayed the scenes in his mind, he felt the sting of their disdain, the way they kept their distance even as they hurled mountains of insults behind his back.
It was as if they reveled in tearing him down, blaming him for their own misdeeds and failures. It was like a pastime, one would think they received silver to bad mouth him. After all, silver and recognition was all they needed.
Honor was a distant thought.
All that backlash he faced was for the actions they caused, but it didn’t stop them from dragging him through the mud, then eventually, dragging his children through the mud as well.
None of them were spared, they were outcasts that no one would outwardly help, they didn’t want his "disgusting" ways and his horrible luck to rub off on their families and their children.
Was that what was happening now? Would Master Xu Zeng hold a meeting with Master Xuan Jian to publicly shame him? Then after, his children and him would be kicked out?
Lee Hua didn’t know what to do next. How should he beg to keep his children here? Winter was coming, and had more savings from birthing Da Long and Xiao Long than he managed to save alone in the last five years on his own.
Realistically he could rent a home somewhere, but... He didn’t want to!
The thought of leaving this uncertain home, of starting over in a world that had shown him nothing but cruelty, filled him with dread. He had worked tirelessly to provide for his children, to give them a better life than he had ever known.
To lose everything now would be a devastating blow.
But as he looked down at Lee An, clutching his pant leg with innocent trust as she dozed standing up, knowing her dad was here... He knew he couldn’t give up.
He shouldn’t have tried to climb such a high mountain.
Even Lee Mo’s steady little breaths could be heard like a beating drum in his head. Sleeping in a strange man’s hands, unafraid of the world—the positive changes a few months had made in Xiao An and Xiao Momo were too many to count.
His children depended on him, and relied on him for safety and security. He couldn’t let them down, no matter how hopeless the situation seemed.
With a heavy heart, Lee Hua wondered if it was too late to seek forgiveness, to beg for another chance. He knew there was no excuse for his past mistakes, but perhaps there was still a glimmer of hope for redemption.
"Midwife Lee," a soothing voice interrupted Lee Hua’s tumultuous thoughts, pulling him from the depths of his despair.
He felt like a caged thing, but the man beside him’s gentle whisper was exactly what he needed.
Startled, Lee Hua looked up to meet Min’s gaze, finding a strange comfort in the man’s reassuring presence. Despite the chaos around them, Min’s whisper was like a lifeline, offering a calming wave of peace from the relentless negativity.
As their eyes locked, Lee Hua couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude wash over him. Min’s smile was like a ray of light in the darkness, his rugged features softened by genuine warmth.
It was a familiar sight, one that had brought comfort to his little Lee Mo and himself countless times before. The man clearly liked children, and didn’t even have a problem with little gers.
This wasn’t the first time the man had helped Lee Hua and his children.
Lee Mo had become accustomed to everyone from Blooming and Budding Courtyard at this point in time and was turning into a free spirit, but Min had been one of the first people he clung to, after Xu Feng.
Min’s strength was solid. Yet, despite his imposing stature, he handled Lee Mo with a gentleness that was shocking. He carried Xiao Momo like the most delicate little flower in the world.
The little ger’s trust in Min was with good reason.
When the little ger wanted hugs, he didn’t ask his own Dad, Lee Hua, he instead ran to Min, who carried him effortlessly, taking him to finish his tasks around the estate like a jade ornament.
It was amazing how such a strong presence could be so gentle, and still so firm and muscular underneath it all. At that thought, Lee Hua’s face reddened. ’Firm and muscular?’
But as Lee Hua realized he had been leaning against Min without even noticing it, embarrassment washed over him, chasing away the rest of the negative thoughts.
Midwife Lee, just like his Xiao An was leaning against him, swaying from side to side, he had been leaning against Min’s body.
It was the only thing holding him up. Him a widowed ger with two children, was leaning up against an unmarried man in broad daylight—okay, it wasn’t daylight...
Still, he could accept being a hidden bed partner, but this was too much. He would ruin Min’s reputation! After everything the other had done for him, that was too much! "Excuse me, Brother Min," He mumbled, quickly averting his eyes.
Quickly straightening himself, Lee Hua recoiled from the unintended intimacy. He couldn’t bear the thought of tarnishing Min’s reputation, especially after all the kindness the man had shown him.
Several days ago, he was informed by Xu Hu Zhe that he would have a new living quarters arranged in the servants’ living area. It was similar in size and design to the space they had been living in.
Strangely enough, in the two months they’d spent in Nanshan Estate, their belongings had more than doubled. Min had quickly volunteered to help them move as soon as Xiao Momo had complained about his tired arms.
