Chapter 380: Blessing of the Nanny
Chapter 380: Blessing of the Nanny
Determination and all, neither man would stay too long in the mountains. Xuan Jian and Xu Zeng would even considerately take turns hunting to make sure one of them was in Nanshan Estate at any given time.
If Xu Zeng wanted, he could stay weeks in the solitude of the forest, he now preferred solitude after his experiences in Dongmen, but he would never stay more than a forte night’s hunt.
The dragon could share energy with the two eggs, but they also needed some energy from their maternal bloodline. And, the dragon had forbidden him from taking them with him deep into the mountains.
To be fair, Xuan Jian would also leave the eggs behind when he went hunting.
Xu Zeng wasn’t scared of fighting like his kin—Xu Feng—not zombies, humans, or animals, but this dragon—Xuan Jian—was of the Krav bloodlines. In comparison, he and Xu Feng weren’t even naturally offensive or even defensive.
They were clearly better suited to supporting warrior bloodlines who kept the peace between all the demon beasts. Even so he wasn’t scared of a fight between him and Xuan Jian. He was battle tested in Dongmen, and he wouldn’t feel ashamed to fall to a Torann Dragon.
It might even be a point of pride, depending on how he was feeling that day.
Still, keeping the peace was for the best. He wouldn’t take Da Long and Xiao Long into the mountains until after they broke their shells.
Xu Zeng tightened his jawline at the thought of his own bloodline and all their ancestors had to endure. It was easy to ignore the inherited pain when all he could think about were his brother and the never ending zombies as well as the modern distractions.
In Dongmen, he could keep himself from thinking too deeply about things relating to bloodline. Survival was his top priority and other than that getting home was constantly on his mind.
Now, he had more time to think as he took part in what he considered more mundane tasks like monitoring the state of the wines they took so much effort to process and store.
This silver haired demon beast wanted to be more than just a breeding tool. His main goal in life was to protect his brother and himself only two months ago...but he had already lost his brother...
Unpleasant thoughts. All of them were unpleasant thoughts.
In a blink, the grounds were beneath his quick strides, and the cellars were nothing but a distant and forgotten memory.
The two eggs, nestled securely in their basket, still showed the tranquility of deep slumber. They were completely out for the count.
Following their routine, they should remain embraced by dreams for the next stick of incense—approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Xu Zeng had already accomplished the impossible.
He’d gotten the two fussy cubs to nap.
This should make him ecstatic, however, the silhouette Xu Zeng had been anticipating remained elusive, and a subtle shift in his calm expression betrayed a flicker of disappointment.
Not even a glimpse was seen.
"Hmm," he mused, making a snap decision. He pivoted promptly, his gaze momentarily grazing the stables before picking up speed. The pathways before him glided by at a rapid pace.
Heading back to Blooming Courtyard, the place where he had retrieved the eggs earlier, Xu Zeng was on a mission. The caretaker’s duty over his slumbering nephews had been fulfilled, an obligation given while their papa toiled in the greenhouse.
Purposefully avoiding Xuan Jian during his inspection, Xu Zeng had carefully maneuvered through the estate’s intricate layout without stopping at Blooming Courtyard during his initial stroll.
He was already acquainted with the state of the cellars in that courtyard, but now it was his destination. If he had wings, he would probably fly there.
"Master Zeng," "Master Zeng."
The greeting from Jie and Bo came swiftly as Xu Zeng become visible to the two men admiring their hard work.
The greenhouse looked beautiful. The wooden beams looked even studier, and the rice papered roofs were of a clearly superior quality. A small smile played at Xu Zeng’s lips, Xu Feng would like this.
Acknowledging the presence of the two men, Xu Zeng pointed discreetly to the sleeping cubs, signaling that the delicate mission of naptime had been accomplished.
"Ah," Bo caught himself, aware of his booming voice. Prematurely waking the young masters was not an option. The adorable six year old Xuan Jian he once knew had evolved into an overindulgent papa with a fierce protective streak, not to be taken lightly.
Hearing the chorus of "Master Zeng," Xuan Jian, turned while wiping sweat off his brow as he surveyed the completed greenhouse.
A rare smile—scarce these days—graced his lips, the source of happiness unclear. Was it the presence of his cubs or the fulfillment of Xu Feng’s greenhouse that stirred this unfamiliar feeling?
"Thank you," he greeted Xu Zeng quietly, the gratitude carrying weight. The younger man had come to present the slumbering cubs, a gesture preventing Xuan Jian from venturing out to find him. Lately, solitude had become a daunting prospect.
It was better to stay busy and with company if possible. The nights were the worst, only equal to the pain he felt during meal times.
Xu Zeng quickly turned around, directing himself to a new target before freezing and relaying some parting words, "We need to talk later."
"Yes, we do," replied Xuan Jian, their interaction brief and purposeful, oblivious to the awkward atmosphere it created for the onlookers.
With an agreement silently sealed, Xu Zeng redirected his course, marching with determination.
His pace when spending time with his nephews was peaceful, his aura bright. His pace when returning the sleeping nephews was quick and stern. Now, his pace as he made a beeline for this target to calm his nerves was quick, but optimistic(?)
There was a noticeable pep in his step. The standoffish temperament melting away and an air of mischief burning through.
The tall man was almost skipping across the estate grounds.
