"...you are ranked third in this year’s Xuicai exams..."

"...you are ranked third..."

"...ranked third..."

Ranked third. Ranked third. Ranked third.

RANKED THIRD!

Three. Tres. Trois. Drei. Tre. Meteta, Três. Talto. Три. Sān. Atọ. San. Thalātha. Tīn. Sam. Drie. Tría. Tre. Uku. Trzy. Üç. Shalosh. Kolme. Tre...

*Tre is three in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Albanian, and Italian!*

There were many more languages, each with its own unique word for "three," but Xu Feng didn’t know them, he didn’t even understand why that internal chant was playing in his head.

Had his brain broken into another intelligence level in shock? That was a question for the fourth wall, for now, he ranked third place!

A man, ger, raised in another world swooped in and after killing himself with both books and jade swords for an entire season, he passed the Xuicai exam. He passed and ranked third!

Xu Feng nodded proudly like a cock strutting around, but Xuan Yang seemed shocked. Mister know it all was shocked! This was even better than ranking third!

The momentary pause in his little happy dance was completely ignored. Xuan Yang was in shock, and Xu Feng would rather enjoy the moment and gloat, than pause to wonder what exactly he ranked third in.

Was he third in the province, or third in all of Donghua? Bai Mo could be number one in the Kingdom of Donghua, but him, a self proclaimed salted fish, ranking third in the entire kingdom? That was too much to think about.

But above everything else, Xu Feng was excited he was now like a secondary school graduate. All was well in the world.

His adoptive parent would stop rolling around in their resting places, the investment they made into his schooling through secondary school wasn’t in vain. But he still hadn’t fully lived up to their goals of finishing university...

The reason Xu Feng really wanted to get his scholars title in this world, was because of his foster parents. But now knowing they’ll--Xu Feng, Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang--likely leave this continent, does it even matter anymore?

’Will a scholar’s title mean anything?’ He thought, would it mean anything for his family?

Xu Feng’s excitement dwindled at the thought of his parents. He was still excited though, but also a bit tired. "Hah-" As he sighed, Xuan Yang released a long breath, "Haaaaah," releasing himself from his frozen state.

First, he looked at the toothily grinning Xuan Jian who was clearly proud, then the ger who should be ecstatic, but was looking quiet and reserved with only a small smile.

Xu Feng looking quiet with no outsiders around?

Xuan Yang’s brows furrowed, had he missed something in his shock. He took a quick survey of the greenhouse—empty—before his head snapped back in place and his lazer sharp snake eyes came back to his prey, still shocked.

Shocked, but more proud than anything.

"Our children have the most talented dad in all of Donghua." He said in a seemingly calm voice, but if one paid attention, one could hear the quivering in Xuan Yang’s voice. He was in awe of his newest lover, his bride.

He had helped teach Xu Feng a thing or two, mostly guiding his studies, so he knew how quickly the ger learned new things, but still...

"The most talented dad in all of Dongzhou!" Xuan Jian joined in, the most visibly excited of the three.

Xu Feng looked up at both men, a small smile on his face, but he didn’t take it to heart. They were just humoring him. "They have a very talented father and papa too. We need to decide whose going to be father, and who’s going to papa though..."

"Papa?" "A papa?" The two bewildered snakes questioned in near unison. The ger was making up words from thin air again, it didn’t even sound like human words this time! More like a sound.

Xu Feng was more focused on whether he should plan to take the Juren exam in the fall or not. Did that make sense? Would it serve him in any way?

He didn’t want to serve the court, so getting a Jinshi title like Xuan Yang’s wasn’t in his plans even from the beginning. That palace drama wasn’t his cup of tea.

Xuan Yang was usually the quickest to asses Xu Feng’s moods and this time held true as well, but even Xuan Jian had paused his celebration to let the two other men realize they should be celebrating.

None of these titles meant much to Xuan Jian, but it seemed to mean a lot to them—Xuan Yang and Xu Feng—yet, he was the most excited. Too strange, he was missing something.

"There is no need to take the Juren exam if you don’t desire it. But if you do, having children will not hinder your progress." Xuan Yang stared deeply into the Xu Feng’s bright eyes. "Jian and I will be here to support you in any choice you make."

Xu Feng’s smiled brightened the greenhouse once more and he nodded. That hadn’t even crossed his mind yet, but Xuan Yang was so sweet. Much sweeter than he let on.

"I don’t want to take the Jinshi exam, but I was thinking about trying the Juren exam in the fall with Bai Mo," Xu Feng then looked over to the blood stained man. "And maybe Xuan Jian?"

He hadn’t asked what anyone else, other than Bai Mo, wanted for themselves or for him. But from the way their lives had been going, becoming a scholar seemed out of their plans. Would Xuan Jian even want to be a Juren?

Xu Feng thought this would be a great opportunity for a former servant of the Xuan family to rise in rank, and ride on their heads. But, Xuan Jian had never been from this continent to begin with. Did any of it matter to him?

Xuan Jian’s smile returned in full flare like a megawatt bulb as the silver haired ger looked at him questioningly, his reservation strange but endearing. He couldn’t help but want to play along in this continent with his lovers.

There wouldn’t be any portals weakening or opening quite yet, they still had time till the events in the prophecy. They had years.

Taking an exam, in the fall to cheer up their ger wasn’t too big of a sacrifice. They could spend more time together this way, but...
