Chapter 296: Plan B? What’s That?
The forest seemed to stretch out endlessly, a vast expanse of towering trees that cast long, eerie shadows on the forest floor. The sky above was a dreary canvas of gray, shrouded in thick, ominous clouds that seemed to hang heavily, blocking out the sun’s rays.
It was as if the very heavens themselves had conspired to create an atmosphere of foreboding and gloom. A scene out of a horror movie.
Xu Feng’s thoughts were consumed by a turbulent mix of emotions, his mind a whirlwind of confusion and self doubt. The soreness in his ankles gnawed at him, an uncomfortable reminder of his physical discomfort.
It felt as though he had been walking for days, no weeks, no months! Okay, maybe not that long. Just the hike up the hill with Xuan Jian and Xuan Yang was only a few hours long and that was enough to wreck him. He didn’t need to exaggerate that much...
Had they always been sore, though? Xu Feng couldn’t remember how sore they felt after that hike, it felt like it had been months...and it had...
Maybe the soreness was a result of sitting cross legged for nearly four months within the Xuan Ancestor’s space?
Or was it because he’d gotten chubby and his body was showing...showing certain signs!!!?
The thought of his body changing, of certain signs manifesting, sent a surge of panic coursing through him. Xu Feng wanted to wail and cry out, but he knew it would change nothing.
As he trudged through the unforgiving forest, his vision clouded with red rimmed eyes, everything around him appeared dark and dreary. The woods seemed to loom menacingly, like an evil haunted forest from a nightmarish tale.
Yet, the cranky ger’s perception of the world was at odds with reality.
For the teen following closely behind him and anyone else with two eyes, or even a single eye, everything was bathed in bright sunlight, and the forest exuded an aura of welcoming serenity.
The trees appeared vibrant and full of life, their leaves shimmering with a gentle luminance. The forest was a complete contrast to the bleak landscape that Xu Feng saw.
Although Xu Hu Zhe kept his gaze firmly fixed on Xu Feng, he couldn’t help but feel the blatant difference in the forest’s ambiance.
It had been normal, or somewhat normal, before they had entered the strange otherworldly realm. The forest like Xu Feng’s garden in the underground house, no cellar, no greenhouse! That was the word!
Xu Hu Zhe was not unaffected even as he followed along silently. Was this the power of a pregnant ger? Was this just the power of Xu Feng? What in the world was happening?
A normal forest had changed. Now, it felt like a place of magic, like stepping into a fairy tale.
Anyone from the modern world would immediately understand, this was a Disn*y Princess setting, with the birds and the bees—okay maybe not the bees—with the birds and the squirrels and Bam*I frolicking around the princess.
However, despite the apparent beauty of the forest, Xu Hu Zhe couldn’t escape the ominous feeling that had been following him.
The Xuan Ancestor himself was a dream Hu Zhe wanted to stay a dream, but he couldn’t possibly. Because while the forest like Xu Feng’s greenhouse welcomed him with open arms. The birds singing, the trees seeming to make way for him, everything was singing and dancing like when a Disn*y Princess showed up, there was a scary aura following Xu Hu Zhe.
It had been there even before they entered the secret realm, a lurking presence that he had dismissed as his imagination. But after their encounter with Dong Yang, he knew that the feeling was not a figment of his imagination.
The specter had been trailing them, looming in the shadows, and it harbored a deep-seated dislike for him. When they made their way to the entrance of the other realm, it had been watching him menacingly.
Inside the realm it had been crushing him with its disdain, and an aura filled with killing intent.
Now, as they left the realm, Xu Hu Zhe felt like he had stolen something from the ghost. The feeling wasn’t as bad as when he was inside its domain, but it was still ever present. There was no killing intent, but the feeling of being carefully watched and scrutinized remained constant.
As they continued their short trek through the forest, the sense of foreboding grew stronger, and Xu Hu Zhe wanted to plead with the specter for mercy. This was a targeted attack. It was nice to Xu Feng, and he was nice to Xu Feng—that was his benefactor who he would give his life for—they should be on the same side.
"Hah," Without realizing it, Xu Hu Zhe joined the ranks of Xu Feng, the sighing king.
A bone chilling feeling coursed through Xu Hu Zhe as he walked alongside Xu Feng, the forest around them seemingly closing in. He was taller than his companion, but his normally confident strides had been replaced by an unsettling withdrawal.
His raven black hair took on an almost otherworldly bluish glow in the dim light, and his back was curled, as if trying to shield himself from the eerie sensations that seemed to seep from the shadows.
In contrast, Xu Feng appeared lifeless, his silver hair haggardly tied up in a messy top knot that was slowly turning into a disheveled ponytail. It was evident that he had been fussing around for some time before leaving the other realm, and now he seemed drained.
The difference between the way Xu Feng felt and the vibrance of the world that surrounded them, was earth shaking.
The journey back to their campsite was a short one, a mere stone’s throw away from where Dong Yang had released them from his realm. Although only an hour had passed since they entered the other realm, it felt like a lifetime had gone by.
