Chapter 232: Do You Want to Start a Cat Fight?
Outside the serene courtyard, the scene unfolded with an air of intrigue. The teahouse, where the gers had initially gathered, was bathed in the warm, golden hues of the setting sun. Its elegant facade exuded an old world charm, inviting patrons to linger over cups of aromatic tea and engage in hushed conversations.
There were even live performances taking place in the depths of the establishment. Hidden from casual view, a world of enchantment awaited.
Muted sounds of harmonious and bewitching melodies wafted to the street in clusters. The occasional high point of a poets recital could barely be heard.
Such a harmonious scene. Or at least, it should have been.
The three gers from the teahouse had exited its ornate wooden doors, their polished shoes clicking lightly on the cobblestone path that led them to the other side of the street.
The distance between the teahouse and the location where they now loitered was more than a stone’s throw, yet their intentions were clear—to keep a close watch on Xu Feng and his entourage.
The street, in this affluent area of Yilin Town, exuded a sense of quiet opulence. Lush greenery adorned the surrounding buildings, and the architecture spoke of the peak of an era long past—at least in Xu Feng’s opinion it was long past.
It was a place where the town’s more privileged residents sought respite from the hustle and bustle of the everyday world. Though not teeming with activity, the street was not entirely empty of passerby.
Some strolled leisurely, enjoying the tranquility of the affluent neighborhood, while others, drawn by the allure of the nearby teahouse, ventured closer. It was a place where people from different walks of life converged, a crossroads of curiosity and intrigue.
In this setting, the two groups—Xu Feng’s entourage of charismatic heartthrobs...and the other group of impeccably groomed gers from well to do families—stood as contrasting figures. Each group had its own magnetic aura, and together, they created a captivating spectacle that couldn’t go unnoticed.
While none of their faces were directly visible to Xu Feng, who remained inside his carriage, he couldn’t help but recognize the voice of one of the gers from the opposing group. The tension in the air was palpable, and it seemed that something significant was about to unfold in this quiet corner of Yilin Town.
As the three gers continued to exchange snide and pointed remarks about Xu Feng, the shame of the Xuicai exam incident echoed in his mind. He couldn’t help but recall that fateful day (Chapter 140: "Strip Search"). The memory resurfaced vividly, the embarrassment and well cloaked annoyance still fresh.
Xu Feng’s excitement about turning his life around, both with his men and his family, began to wane. He had thought that Xuan Yang’s intervention had resolved the stripping incident at a political level, but he was advised not to show his face in Yilin Town for the foreseeable future.
He had adhered to this request by Xuan Yang as best as he could, even sending Xu Hu Zhe, Xu Si, and Xu San to Yilin Town on their own the day before. The only reason he had come was to settle his family matters. Yet, here he was, confronted by gossip from the very exam he had tried to put behind him.
As Xu Feng overheard the conversation of the three gers, his eyes contracted in suspicion. How was it that they started discussing this topic as soon as he and his group exited the building? Their remarks about his past and present character seemed oddly timed.
Xu Feng had taken great pains to conceal his identity during the exam—dulling his bright red mole, temporarily dyeing his silver hair brunette, and adopting an even more subdued style.
He believed the ger who took the exam with his name would look nothing like him. However, someone had seen through his disguise on that fateful day and orchestrated the stripping incident.
Annoyance welled up within Xu Feng as he pieced it all together. His initial excitement had turned into frustration. One of the gers should be the culprit who had orchestrated the incident and now he was the same one gossiping about it now with his acquaintances.
In his mind’s eye, Xu Feng vividly replayed the scene of his daring strip tease.
The memory was a mix of embarrassment and defiance. Xu Feng’s actions had shocked and amused the crowd, but they had also saved his reputation as a scholar. It was a bold move, and it had swiftly shifted the focus away from the cheating allegations.
As he stood there, recalling the events of that day, Xu Feng’s annoyance grew. It was clear that these three gers were behind the incident. He couldn’t let them continue spreading rumors about him—true or false.
"Some gers are born to be inferior," the familiar voice twittered, its arrogance dripping like honeyed venom, "Inferior gers socialize with inferior gers. And no matter how they try, they can never compare to a well-trained ger."
The words cut through the air like a sharp blade, carrying with them an intense air of condescension.
Xu Feng’s gaze narrowed as he pinpointed the source of the voice, his own expression an intriguing blend of amusement and irritation. The pampered ger who had dared to utter such disdainful words stood before him, oozing arrogance from every pore.
At that moment, the stage was set for a clash and eyes had wandered over to the groups and lingered for far too long.
As Xu Feng took a determined step forward, his thoughts were filled with a mix of annoyance and anticipation, his heart chiding a certain pampered ger, Sun Ming Hua and his friends, who had dared to provoke him. But just as he was about to make his presence felt, a sudden flurry of movement caught his attention.
Long legs, agile and swift, moved quicker than his own.
Three pairs of them, to be precise.
One moment, he was ready to stride forward, and the next, he found himself frozen in place as Xu Hu Zhe, Xuan Jian, and Xuan Yang surged ahead with those ’daddy long legs.’
