Chapter 226: What is a Cultivator?
Chapter 226: What is a Cultivator?
"Cultivators" in the Dongzhou continent were nothing short of legendary figures, their presence and existence shrouded in mystery. These unicorn like beings had become increasingly scarce, even more so after the original five immortal beasts disappeared from the realm.
Xu Feng pondered this as he contemplated the scarcity of those he considered true cultivators in this day and age.
In his view, the genuine original cultivators were a rare breed, few and far between. If there were any left, they likely dwelled in seclusion, hidden from the prying eyes of the world.
The era of true cultivators seemed like a distant memory, a time when their extraordinary abilities and powers were more prominent. And even then, there were likely only a handful or so of them outside of the original demon beasts of Dongzhou.
Within the realm of cultivators, there was a hierarchy—a complex system of rankings based on the purity and potency of one’s immortal bloodline.
Immortal blood was not created equal; it varied in strength and heritage. Among these rankings, the lowest were those with immortal bloodlines that could only be measured and traced through the relics of major clans like the esteemed Deng clan (fox clan) or the renowned Bai Clan (fox clan).
While this rank, the fourth rank, was more populous, its members still took immense pride in being of "immortal blood." It was an honor not bestowed upon the majority of the Dongzhou population. In fact, only a mere 2% of the population possessed immortal bloodlines that could be measured in any way.
Ascending the hierarchy, the next rank consisted of individuals with physical attributes affiliated with the five original immortal beasts. These attributes didn’t necessarily have to mimic the exact characteristics of the original immortal beasts; instead, they often manifested as distinctive features or traits.
For instance, descendants of the snake beast ancestor, while not mirroring the original black snake, predominantly shared features like pupil shape, eye color, a forked tongue, or the presence of scales, typically in shades of green or brown.
This occurrence was not uncommon in cultivation worlds, and Xu Feng had encountered similar concepts in the novels he read in his original world. In such tales, it was readily accepted that demon beasts could give birth to offspring with inferior bloodlines, especially when they mated with non demon beast partners.
All five demon beasts that had descended upon Dongzhou had indeed sired or birthed offspring with the local inhabitants who were cut off from the world of cultivation. It made perfect sense that these later generations would inherit weaker traits.
Even human cultivators would give birth to children with poor or no cultivation roots, while some prodigies would also birth prodigies. Life wasn’t fair in either case. Neither was Dao, Xu Feng smirked a little at the thought of the Dao and the will of heaven...He was falling down a deep rabbit hole.
What truly intrigued Xu Feng, however, was the strange existence of people with unusually pure immortal bloodlines, like himself or actually Xu Zeng.
As the carriage continued its journey through the streets of Yilin Town, Xu Feng couldn’t help but think deeper into his theories as he sorted through all the new information he’d just received.
The ranking system among those with physical attributes—the so called rank three cultivators—was even more intricate, breaking down into subcategories based on the purity and quality of their physical immortal beast characteristics.
Within this tier, distinctions were made between high, mid, and low purity individuals, further delineating the extraordinary from the exceptional. Xuan Yang, the prodigal scion of the Xuan family, "belonged" to this unique rank, carrying within him the most promising lineage of all the snake clans.
It was no wonder Lady Xuan coveted a child from this extraordinary son of hers, despite not having an immortal bloodline herself. She recognized that her son’s unique heritage would open doors and elevate her status.
Old Xuan, Xuan Yang’s grandfather and the sole other carrier of an immortal bloodline in the Xuan family at a higher rank (rank three, mid to low), had a similar desire for purer descendants. Although he hadn’t pressured Xuan Yang into early marriage, his interest in meeting Xu Feng now made perfect sense—he could have easily skipped their wedding.
The offspring of Xu Feng and Xuan Yang held the potential to reach a second rank immortal bloodline—a significant improvement compared to the many pure human descendants fathered by the current Xuan patriarch (Xuan Yang’s dad, also a pervert, but in the wrong way), who had proven himself to be rather unproductive.
The next rank, denoted as rank two, included those with more complete animal attributes and the unique ability to conceal or retract those characteristics. It was a category where Bai Mo, with his retractable ears, likely belonged.
Then came the most coveted rank, rank one—a realm that had become the stuff of legend. These individuals possessed immortal bloodlines of such extraordinary strength that they could channel the "immortal abilities" of their ancestors.
In simpler terms, they were cultivators, although not in the human sense. They boasted demon beast ancestry and transcended the boundaries of ordinary creatures.
They didn’t fit the mold of full blooded demon beasts who could freely shift forms, nor did they originate as animals or demon beasts that cultivated a human form through the absorption of energy from the heavens and earth, culminating in the development of a dantian or a beast core.
The rank one immortal bloodline carriers were the true cultivators in a world where cultivation was similar to magic. In the background of Dongzhou, a continent that appeared to be a distant backwater realm, they were undoubtedly seen as unicorns.
If there were other continents in this vast world, the inhabitants of Dongzhou would likely be regarded with condescension and pity.
Xu Feng’s mind churned with these revelations, his thoughts wandering to the original immortal beasts and their interactions with the inhabitants of this remote land.
Did these beings look down on the denizens of this small realm, or did they cherish this place as a sanctuary where they could thrive without the need for relentless cultivation and survival competition?
Perhaps it was a haven where they could lead carefree lives, focused solely on siring countless offspring and basically being Gheng*s Kh*ns?
Even if their ancestors were clearly into free love, the current inhabitants of Dongzhou had fallen into a society that didn’t value those who birthed their children...
Xu Feng glanced at his two lovers.
