Chapter 108: Special Seeds

Erlang watched the young mistress...Master Feng spend silver with an almost careless abandon, as if it were as common as water. Despite the seemingly excessive spending, Erlang couldn’t help but want to smile.

Occasionally, Xu Feng would glance back at him, a look that seemed to seek reassurance or confirmation. It was hard to decipher what was going on in Xu Feng’s mind at any given time, but Erlang was certain it was not unkind.

Everything was different with Master Feng. He was more than just grateful; he was so so so so so thankful to all the gods. This new master was really kind, a blunt difference to others who had tried to take advantage of the servants, like Steward Wu. He had never tried to touch anyone like the pervert either.

*SIGH

"Why are you sighing now," Xu Feng asked the big teenager without even looking back. He was fully absorbed in watching the store clerk, making sure the white rice he had finally found after three stores and the good quality flour wouldn’t be switched out during the check out process.

The original owner, Xu Zeng, had memories of people in Sun Village frequently claiming that they had experienced such scams. It had even happened to the original owner’s father a few times. This might not be the same town as the one nearest to Sun Village, but Xu Feng remained on alert.

"I’m very grateful for Master," Erlang began, his voice tinged with emotion. "I know how hard life would be without Master Feng."

Xu Feng paused his meticulous inspection of the food, thoughts wandering to the boy before him. Staring at the sad little giant in front of him. He wondered if he could still feed the boy enough for him to reach his full potential.

Would Erlang grow taller than Xuan Yang, he wondered?

It was clear that years of hardship and malnutrition had taken a toll on Erlang. He should never have been forced to endure such suffering. Auntie Lifen and Auntie Lan should have shown compassion to these poor, orphaned children.

*SIGH

This time, it was Xu Feng who sighed. Why was Erlang so skilled at tugging at his heartstrings?

Xu Feng swiftly glanced at Erlang, offering a small smile and even a wink, before returning his attention to the store clerk who was finalizing the transaction. "I’m grateful for you too, Erlang," he said.

As the words left their lips, both of them contemplated the uncertainties that the future held. However, for now, they were content with their unique family or whatever it was, quirks and all.

Whether they would both regret their words one day, was yet to be seen, but for now Xu Feng was happy about his new family. They would need to buy some big bones if there were any butchers in the market at this time.

He hadn’t planned to buy any meat since they had so much meat at home that they still needed to treat. It would be more than enough for them even with a few dozen new mouths and stomachs to feed.

He needed to fatten some people up and make sure they hit their full potential and to do that he didn’t just need meat, continuing with the bone broth soup for the kids would help supplement their nutrition.

As Xu Feng remained somewhat preoccupied with the little exchange with Erlang and ensuring the transaction went smoothly at the store, he had managed to maintain his observant demeanor throughout their trip.

When they were in the company of Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian, it was apparent that more well-dressed suitors gathered around, competing for the attention of the two men. In such an atmosphere, it was harder to pay attention to their surroundings.

However, now that they had moved away from the allure of the snakes, Xu Feng began to notice the peculiar patches of poverty scattered throughout Yilin town.

These weren’t extreme levels of destitution, but there was a noticeable shift from the colorful and well-fitted clothing worn by the wealthier residents to the ragged jackets worn by those in less fortunate circumstances. On his last visit to the town, he hadn’t noticed such an obvious contrast.

Had there been an influx of newcomers to Yilin, or had he simply not paid enough attention during his previous trip?

Noting this, Xu Feng and Erlang dropped off their final batch of goods from the stores they’d visited at their carriage. Xu Feng’s legs were already beyond sore at this point.

His previous rest seemed like a dream. He didn’t know if he wanted to go back to Nanshan estate or take another rest on Xuan Yang! But he still had to go to the seed shop and the bookstore.

The two proceeded to Xu Feng’s secret place. Not really a secret place, it was a normal store, Xu Feng was a bit embarrassed and wanted to hide it from Xuan Yang and Xuan Jian.

If it was what he thought he might be hiding this trip to the seed shop for another reason.

It was a simple seed shop adjacent to the cloth store where they had separated from the rest of their group. There was nothing too eye catching about the storefront or even the interior design.

Xu Feng entered the shop with an air of nonchalance, although anyone who knew him personally would detect a certain eagerness in his step. For those with a keen eye, it would be apparent that hidden within his sleeves, seeds were germinating rapidly before losing their vitality in a continuous cycle.

"Welcome to Yilin Seed," the older man at the counter greeted with a little enthusiasm. This was one of the most deserted shops on the street at this time of year.

Who else other than Xu Feng, in their right mind would be visiting a seed shop in the middle of winter...in January? No one had planting plans at the moment. Most were just trying to make it through the winter without being bored, the rich, or without losing a life, the poor.

Xu Feng nodded at the older man who was clearly shocked by his appearance. This was the man who had sold them their seeds on their last trip, Xu Feng was in luck!

The man on the other hand didn’t seem to recognize this patron of his until Xu Feng got closer or maybe it was Erlang’s face. Either way, the confusion on the man’s face disappeared and in its place, real happiness appeared.

"Young mistress!" the man called out familiarly, calling out the address Si had called him with no shame or hesitation. "Welcome back!"

Xu Feng grinned at the cunning man who was looking for a sale. He was just as chatty as Xu Feng remembered him being. He was looking to buy too, but it wasn’t anything common this time.

He had finally gotten rid of the Xuan family elders and Steward Wu and the other shady people in the estate. He was ready to bring back a treasure for his greenhouse.

"Does the master have any new seeds?" Xu Feng asked in an uninterested tone but with anticipation brimming just beneath the surface.
