The General's Wife Wants to Leave -
Chapter 92: Nothing to regret
Chapter 92: Nothing to regret
Feeling impatient with the sort of hide-and-seek game, Canillas reached out his hands to gently pinch Joanna’s chin, which made her unable to shift her head.
"Are you crying?" Canillas asked once he got to see his wife’s face clearly.
Shifting her head slightly to the side and her hand gently pushing away the hand that made her unable to hide her face anymore, Joanna shook her head once she was freed, as the General did not force her to stay still this time.
"No, I am not," Joanna answered in a voice barely above the whisper without looking at the General, as she still avoided showing her face that was already revealed to him.
"There is nothing to worry about, Joanna. I have taken care of them. So, you are safe now," Canillas assured in a low voice, looking down at her.
He understood her emotions at the moment. It was not hard for him to tell that she was terrified. Even the trembling hands were enough to inform him that she was not fine, although she denied her current state.
Joanna gave a nod. Lifting her head as if she had given up hiding something that was already unveiled, Joanna looked up at him and opened her lips, about to say what had disturbed her mind.
"They are the Tres," Canillas suddenly said with a soft smile plastering on his face, making Joanna instantly close her lips as the unspoken question was already answered.
"Have you heard about them?" At his inquiry, Joanna slightly tilted her head, taking a moment to think, and nodded her head about five seconds later.
"The tribal group?" She answered. Her soft voice was laced with doubt, as she might give the wrong answer.
Learning about the history of the kingdom where she was born was a must, and she received that knowledge from her governess when she turned into a teenager. Therefore, the name that was mentioned by the General was kind of familiar to her.
However, since she had learned it years ago and after experiencing so many stressful events lately, she was not sure that the memory that she dug from the piles of memories in her head was right.
"Yes, the opposing tribal groups on the Maldava continent." Canillas completed her answer.
Walking toward the bed, Canillas placed the daggers that were already clean from blood underneath the bed and his clean, polished sword underneath the pillow.
Prior to heading back to the room where his wife might have been waiting for him anxiously, Canillas had washed up in the knight’s quarter and changed his clothes, as he did not want to appear dirty with sweat and dirt covering his entire body after digging the graves for the dead Tres.
Aside from that, the blood that belonged to the corpses had tainted his clothes and body as well. As he thought that it was not a good sight for such a delicate lady as his wife, he headed to the knight’s quarter after finishing burying the corpses, and he did not worry about her being unattended as the Barasca knights who had come to join them in capturing and burying the Tres had guarded her outside her room.
He had asked Fabio to inform the Barasca knights about the Tres and what happened in the forest right after he told Fabio about them when he talked with him in his assigned room in the orphanage.
As the information had been shared and they realized what danger lurked behind their young lady, they actually increased their alertness and security in the orphanage. However, if the Tres were able to trespass on Terra, the Powel Orphanage was absolutely no obstacle at all for them, who moved like a shadow.
Nevertheless, Canillas admitted that they were not to be underestimated, as they moved very calculatedly. If they were not, they would not have sent five fragile subjects to dig up information about the tightness of the security surrounding their target. They also wanted to test the water, finding a possible way to approach their target.
What made Canillas more concerned was that the Tres were not afraid of losing their lives in succeeding their mission. All of them were ready to die in order to not share anything they had with their so-called enemies.
Canillas believed it was not only the loyalty that had grown deeper into their bones but also their passion for getting back what they called home.
Positioning himself on the bed, Canillas took a relaxed seat, leaning against the headboard. He tapped the bed on her side, as if gesturing for her to be on the bed as well. However, he did not voice it out, as he let her choose to sit in bed with him or not. It was no matter at all, as she would sleep in the same bed with him after all.
"When I was in Seidel, I was informed that they had kidnapped six Terran noble ladies, and one of them was found lifeless." Canillas began to narrate the information he had received to Joanna, who was still standing across the bed. She had her eyes widened and her mouth covered with her hand once she digested the information she heard.
He did not hide sharing the most important part, although it would only ignite fear in her, as he wanted her to not be reckless and stop being stubborn so that she would not put herself in danger. He wanted her to be well aware that the Tres, who were targeting her, were a dangerous tribe and not to be underestimated, as he believed that they did not have any slight good intentions.
"It is positive that they have fixed their target on you now. Not because they have targeted you since the beginning, but because they have seen you. To their luck, you have fulfilled the criterion they set." As his wife looked more shocked with a mixture of anxiety and fear at the information he revealed, Canillas added,
"There is nothing to regret. We can only hope the Terran security officers can move faster in capturing them so there will be no more victims in the future."
He sensed the regret she felt at the moment. He did not want to add regret by stating clearly that they would not have targeted her if she did not come into the Powel Orphanage in order to avoid him, which made them see her.
He also could not be proud that he was the right person whose words should be followed, as he was also to blame. He could not be ignorant that she might also blame him for that. The truth he had grasped was that she might not have been here if he had given her what she wanted, not being stubborn enough to bind her in the marriage with him.
However, since it was the thing that he could not do, especially after he was certain to keep his marriage with the woman who had robbed him of his peacefulness, he would protect her at any cost, facing all the threats together, just like how he wanted to inhale the future with this enigmatic woman.
