Chapter 90: Digging graves

The captured young Tres was well aware that there was no way out for him anymore. There was no way to return to where he came from. There was no chance for him to share any information he had obtained with their cronies, particularly when his limbs screamed for help.

And it became more impossible after he mentioned a word that actually worked in provoking the man who was in rage and wanted to protect his wife.

"What an answer we have here," Canillas hummed, trailing up the tip of his sword to create a line scratching up to the filthy man’s jaw. "Fortunately, she is exclusively mine, and I will not share her with whoever it is, especially a filthy man like you," Canillas sneered. "So you better give me the proper answer. Who knows, I will spare your life after that." A sinister smile spread across his face, along with eyes that hid no mercy.

"So, tell me the truth now. Where do your people keep the ladies? What did you all want from them?" He continued to ask, and the young Tres was again quiet, only staring unblinkingly at him.

About five seconds after Canillas questioned him, the young Tres, who stubbornly clamped his mouth shut and only stared at Canillas, blinked, and his expression drastically changed into fear. And in a blink, he grabbed the blade of Canillas’ sword that was pointed at his neck and pushed it deep into his throat.

Finding the man, who one second ago still breathed and stared bravely at him and was now lying motionless on the ground with blood profusely streaming from his neck, Canillas clicked his tongue. Instead of showing condolence, annoyance was clearly depicted on his face.

"Is he dead?" Fabio, who just arrived with a lantern, asked. Another set of footsteps broke the tranquility as Ben appeared not long later behind Fabio.

Pulling his sword from the dead man’s throat, Canillas replied, "Yes. Choosing an easy death rather than being tortured to death." Turning his head to look at Ben, he asked, "Have you checked? Found any?"

"We have found one who tried to escape. Tillo will be here soon," Ben answered.

"Are you sure it is all clear?" Canillas wanted to make sure that there was no trace of the Tres inside the orphanage.

"Worry not. It is clear," Ben confirmed. "The duchy’s knights were also in the search."

Canillas nodded his head at Ben’s confirmation. "Let’s burry them and keep this one alive," Canillas ordered, nudging at the unconscious Tres.

He then crouched down near the bleeding, lifeless body, wiping the blood on both his sword and dagger on the clothes of the corpse, whose eyes were slightly open.

"Digging graves to bury corpses in the night. What an eventful night," Fabio commented before letting out a sigh.

Instead of replying to the complaining Fabio, Canillas turned his head in the direction of the approaching footsteps to find his man-at-arm named Tillo striding toward them with a motionless body on his shoulder.

"Can’t we just throw them away in the forest? Just let them be one with nature naturally," Fabio suggested while checking the body whose life had been taken by Canillas’ sword. He wanted to make sure that the young man was really dead. Subsequently, he closed the opened, souless eyes of the corpse so that he would rest in the dark.

Following suit, he checked the dead body to find something that might be useful as a hint. And Canillas’ comrades did everything in sync without much direction from Canillas, as if they knew already what to do in such a situation.

"Which one do you think is better? Spending an hour digging graves to bury souls or spending many hours fighting to not be buried in the graves they prepared for us in the forest," Canillas replied nonchalantly, checking another corpse that was just brought by Tillo, which was now lying near the first corpse.

"Well, it’s always better to not exert our bodies too much at night, especially when it is a rest hour already," Fabio hummed, moving to check on the unconscious Tres.

"Oh my..." Fabio suddenly mumbled. "Do you want to see what we got here?" He asked, causing Canillas to turn to see him.

"A defective product." A low chuckle escaped Fabio’s lips at the fact he found.

Canillas narrowed his eyes at Fabio’s information. Looking down at the still-collapsed man who had received the impact of his fists, Canillas sighed when he found no tongue in his mouth.

"That’s why he became the one to be on the frontlines," he commented, clicking his tongue. A fleeting second later, he added, "But he still has hands and feet. Just hand him over to Terran officers for further investigation."

If he could not speak, he would answer with his hands or feet when he was not able to resist the impact of the torturing chamber. Canillas thought in his mind.

"Where should we bury them?" Ben asked.

"Here," Canillas answered curtly.

He would not choose other places to bury them as he had to keep his wife’s room in his sight, preventing any unwanted occasions from happening as she was alone in the room. Besides, he had promised her that he would not go far away.

However, in turn, there would be graves around twenty meters from her room. Canillas thought it was fine as long as she did not have any knowledge about the graves.

"Please get us hoes or anything to dig, Fabe. Ask the Barasca knights whom you are acquainted with. Trying not to disturb the rest of the people here," Canillas ordered. The least he wanted was that the presence of corpses was known by the kids and the elderly, which would only haunt them.

In terms of dealing with the intruders, they had tried to minimize the noise that would awaken the people of the orphanage. He was not sure if it worked or not. What he knew was that it was fortunate to have the elderly woman’s room in the front part of the building, far across from his wife’s room.

"I don’t want to," Fabio said, making Canillas frown at him. "Because they are already here without being asked." Fabio grinned, nudging his chin forward.

And what Fabio pointed out was the approaching Barasca knights, who had come with another two corpses and digging tools in their hands.
