The General's Wife Wants to Leave
Chapter 81: It is a pleasure to see

Chapter 81: It is a pleasure to see

As her senses did not perceive any pain but only aches from the fatigue, Joanna lifted the blanket that wrapped her body.

She then slightly shifted from her seat and groped the sheet underneath her with her hand. Soon, Joanna let out a sigh of relief at the revelation she found.

Apart from finding her nightgown and robe that she tight-tied still in the right place, the white sheet that covered the bed was clean, with no foreign traces tainting it.

"I am offended, Joanna." Joanna, who was patting her chest as a sign of relief, turned her head toward the speaking man. "Your suspicion really made my effort to hold myself from doing the thing that you disliked a waste," Canillas said, sighing in the end. "How could you doubt me like that?" And it caused Joanna to wonder if she did something offensive, given how disappointed the man was at her conduct.

But wasn’t it normal to check her condition when she happened to share a bed with a man who did not have blood related to her and happened to be her husband, particularly after experiencing being trapped between two large things twice in a day?

However, not long later, the man changed his disappointed expression to a beaming one, as if the previous expression was only an illusion. "But I forgive you this time." She then watched him move his position from lying to sitting on the bed and offered a beaming smile at her.

And as usual, there was nothing to worry about the man who liked to tease her for his amusement.

"Good morning, my dear wife. Did you sleep well?" Canillas greeted and asked his dazed wife, who still had her eyes on him, despite knowing how well she slept.

Although there was nothing like what a husband and wife usually craved when they were in the same bed under a supportive atmosphere in the room, Canillas felt warm inside him as he finally shared a bed with his wife for the first time. He finally won over her, shaking the ground where she had tried to stand firmly.

He had familiarized himself with the look of his sleeping wife as he had taken the details of her figure when she changed her sleeping position with her back not on him anymore. Different from his first experience observing her sleeping figure when she was sick, it was more relieving to look at a figure who was in a healthy state.

It was not easy for him, as a normal man, to hold himself back from not touching a beautiful woman, who lay defenseless before his very eyes and within his reach. Further than that, her scent, warmth, and soft breath radiated in the air surrounding him. Even the bed, the pillow, and the blanket that covered his body were engulfed with her soothing scent.

However, he had said that he would not do anything without her consent, and he did not want her to not trust him because of his irresistible desire. Aside from that, finding her sleeping so peacefully by his side, as she should have been very much spent because of the mishaps she faced during the day, he had no heart to disturb her.

There was so much time ahead for them to pass through together, so there was no need to rush over a thing and make it ruin to the point it was impossible to be rebuilt. He would prefer them to flow naturally, although he was not sure how much of his patience would remain.

Meanwhile, Joanna, who felt relieved that her so-called husband fulfilled his words to not do something that she disliked, replied his greeting after offering a nod as a gesture of gratitude for him being trustworthy. "Good morning. I slept well."

She could not say that she did not sleep well, as proof showed that she did, just by how she forgot about his presence in her room. And she was sure that her reaction did not slip from the sight of such a sharp-witted man before her.

But Joanna was once again in a daze after sending her reply. She then hastily turned her head away, removing her innocent eyes from the wild look of the man next to her. Apart from that, the advice of her brother about not entering a man’s room in the morning was popping up in her mind.

Without wasting any more seconds, Joanna got off the bed, slipped on her slippers, and dashed out of the room to get Lucy to help her start the day.

And her sudden change of reaction made Canillas burst into laughter, as he did understand the reason behind that action.

-----

In the dining room of the Powel Orphanage, the giggling and chattering sound of children lived in the room, but soon it died down once the meals were served.

There were about twenty children sitting at a long square table, and their eyes never left the big cut of sandwiches of vegetables, bacon, and fried egg, together with a bowl of stomach-relieving chicken ginger soup, that were laid on the trolleys that were pushed by Mrs. Powel, Mrs. Valore, and Joanna. A portion of sliced apples and a finger of banana were also to be served to each kid.

Joanna chuckled at the look of the kids, whose eyes were like puppies, as they stared at the served food, almost drooling.

"Eat it slowly. Don’t get choked," Joanna softly reminded every kid when she, who took part in serving the food, served the bowl of soup to each of them, and the kids replied to her with a sharp nod and a beaming smile that showed their teeth.

And when it came to the turn of a big man who got his share of food, which, of course, was a double portion from the kids, he spoke when the lady kept her lips shut, not delivering the warm message like she did to the kids. "I will, ma’am. Thank you."

At the mischievous, grinning man, Joanna just sent him a flicker of glare with her lips pursed, making Canillas giggle in delight at the treatment of the cold-hearted wife to him.

Sitting together with Mrs. Powel at the dining table, it was the first time for Canillas to have breakfast with his wife, and his gaze never once left her, who was sitting across from him.

Not like when they had their lunch together the day before, when they were invited by Mrs. Powel, who wanted to welcome him, he almost did not share her a look as he admitted that he was in a state that was still upset by her declaration to not have children with him.

Aside from that, Mrs. Powel showed her eagerness to talk to him, asking him about so many things, and he believed that she wanted to know what kind of person he was, including whether he was a good husband for a young lady whom she shared her affection with.

On the other side, Joanna, despite feeling the heavy gaze of the man in front of her, just lowered her head while slurping the warm soup enthusiastically.

It was when she heard a chuckle coming from Mrs. Powel that she lifted her head in the direction of the elderly, who was sitting at the head of the table. Joanna then heard her say, "It seems that the food that is served in this orphanage can’t take the interest of Sir Canillas, as his eyes never leave you, my lady." Mrs. Powel chuckled after uttering what she had seen from the young couple sitting on each of her sides.

Before Joanna could refute, the General replied, "It is because looking at my wife enjoying her meal is a pleasure to me, Mrs. Powel." A smile was spread across Canillas’ lips while his eyes settled back on his wife after he spoke to Mrs. Powel.

Mrs. Powel chuckled. "It is true, Sir Canillas. Lady Joanna has always made me happy when she is having her meals. Every food that she eats looks so delicious, although the truth is not like that."

"No, Mrs. Powel." Joanna shook her head, showing her strong disagreement. "All the food that is cooked by Mrs. Valore is delicious. As you know, I am a picky eater myself," Joanna stated the truth.

She was indeed a picky eater. If she happened to enjoy food, then the food served to her should meet her palate. Otherwise, she might take only one or two bites of it if the taste did not suit her appetite completely.

"I also like it when I see Lady Joanna eating," came a small voice from Joanna’s left side.

Turning her head to see the kid who joined their conversation all of a sudden, Joanna, whose face blushed, asked, "Does the sandwich taste good, Denny?"

She tried to shift the topic off of her. It was all because of the man in front of her that she became the center of attention during the breakfast. Joanna nagged him again in her mind.

Meanwhile, Denny, who tried to hide his flushed face by lowering his head at the question given by the beautiful young lady who was sitting beside him, gave a sharp nod as his answer.

"Then, finish it well. Okay?" said Joanna in a gentle tone, and the brown-haired boy nodded once again before opening his mouth wide to take a big bite of the sandwich in his hands, as if wanting to show the young lady that he would finish the sandwich well.

Watching the scene in front of him, Canillas had one corner of his lips lifted as he thought that even a little boy was smitten by his wife. Shaking his head with his lips still tugging up, Canillas started digging for the food that was served by the ladies of the orphanage.
