Chapter 78: Problematic relationship
How could he pull away immediately if he could feel a smooth, soft skin that touched his wrist for the first time?
Canillas’ heart unknowingly fluttered. He finally was able to feel her skin, which was not covered with gloves, touching one part of his rough body, and he was glad, as it was regarded as significant progress in their problematic relationship.
However, a fleeting moment later, Canillas cursed inwardly. It seemed that what he had frequently heard when he was on the battlefield with his troops was proven to be right. Most men were beasts. They fought and killed. They also devoured their prey.
How could he not agree with that if he was now feeling there was an urge inside him to feel more than this little part of the woman’s skin? He wanted her to touch him more, just like he wanted to feel her more.
He was not sure why, but he felt so thirsty at the scent that enveloped him at the moment. He did not know why, but he wanted to quench his thirst at the source of the scent that he found to be soothing, just like he did in the forest. He also could not explain the feeling of her in his arms, which made him want to embrace her again.
However, the fear-looking face and the trembling cold hands that could not be hidden despite her attempt to look brave were not the things that he wanted to get from her.
He did not want to taint such a pure and rare gem. He could not do the deed that she said she did not like and was out of her consent, no matter how much the beast inside him urged to surface.
He did not want to make her despise him more, although he could easily reason that it was her duty to serve him as her husband, and it was normal for a married couple to complete their marital bounds, having a marriage consummation that they had not completed yet.
However, when Canillas decided to step backward, another malicious thought tempted his mind.
If they had consummated their marriage, would she still be eager to demand a marriage annulment? Would she still have an idea to act rude and cold and leave him like she had in her mind until now?
If it made her tame, wasn’t it better if they completed it now, even if he had to force her?
Although she was angry at him, resenting him to the bone, and would not forgive him like she said, she could not do anything for something that was irreversible. What she could do was walk down the marriage pathway with him.
Canillas decided, and he eliminated all the space that remained between them. He was an inch away from the source of the soothing scent that he uncovered in the forest.
However, instead of doing the same action as he did in the forest, which made him look like a moth chasing the flame, Canillas straightened his back and leaned his forehead on the wall behind the cornered, trembling prey, who looked about to pass out any time soon.
He had also pulled his hand away from her thigh, placing it back on the wall as he did when he caged her.
Canillas closed his eyes, trying to calm his rapid breath.
He could not hurt her. Apart from the fact that she would resent him more, he was more concerned about her feelings.
He could not ruin her just to fulfill his desires and ego. He could not force himself on her, making her be forced to walk down the marriage pathway with him because of the irreversible bond that was made out of her consent. Although he refused to agree to her absurd idea for a marriage annulment, he would never do a thing that made him the real sinner in her eyes.
And it was a mistake. Canillas blamed himself.
He only tried to play a little joke at the cold-hearted woman, who looked overly bewildered, like a real prey meeting a hunter, when finding him in her room before. But who ever thought that the result he obtained was his tortured self, his resurfacing desire to claim her, like when he embraced her in the forest?
He deserved such a tormenting punishment. Not once, but twice in only a day.
When the man was busy blaming himself and extinguishing the raging flame inside him, the woman took a sigh of relief when she found him removing his hand from her.
However, she could not go anywhere as she was trapped between the large, tall man before her and the wall at the back. Joanna felt like she was still in the forest, as her situation was the same, trapping her between two large things at her front and back.
And she chose to stay still without making any deliberate movement or sound, as she was afraid to wake up the wolf in front of her, which would make him change his mind and resume what he intended to do before.
Besides, she was not that oblivious to not knowing what he had tried hard to suppress at the moment.
The knowledge that she had earned from the strict governess and the information he received from her brother about how to carefully act around men, including not to enter a man’s room in the morning, was really helpful to guide her on what to do at a dangerous moment like this, especially when she felt something hard poking in her lower stomach.
And it was the second time she felt today, which was, of course, the first one when he embraced her when they were in the forest.
Joanna tried her best to control her breath, even holding it when the man moved, making the raging breath of the wolf more vividly heard in the room.
About a few minutes later, after finding himself rather calm, Canillas pulled away from the wall and took a step back to look down at his wife, whose height barely reached his shoulders.
His laugh resonated in the room when he found her standing stiff like a statue, even holding her breath.
As laughter faded away, with a smile on his face, Canillas bent over and moved closer to her face again, which made Joanna return to her alarmed state and turn her head to the side again.
And a fleeting second later, Joanna turned stiff.
"Don’t hold your breath too long. Go to sleep. It is already too late." After saying that, Canillas left her, making his way toward the bed in the room.
However, it was not his words that made Joanna turn like a statue. Bringing her hand to touch her temple, she averted her eyes toward the man who had just landed his lips there.
