Chapter 72: A rare scene
Sitting alone on the side of the bed where Liam was sleeping, Joanna looked at him in silence. She carefully caressed his cheek and brushed his greasy hair, which was caused by profuse sweat that occurred the previous day.
Under her palm, she felt his body was cold, although there was no perspiration this time.
The room was very quiet, as there were only the two of them, each of whom bore tranquility.
Mrs. Powel could not be there with them at the moment as she was calming the kids, who were eager to play in the forest, like how they filled their days so far.
Joanna thought that it should be hard for the old lady, as she should try to explain as wisely as she could about the unexpected presence of the wolves so that she would not ignite fear that would make the kids panic afterwards.
"My lady."
Joanna turned her head in the direction of the call that came in a low voice and gave a nod as a response. Soon, Lucy, who was standing on the doorway as she waited for the response from the young lady, came into the room with a tray of a glass of purple-flowered extract that she made based on the explanation of the young lady.
As Lucy arrived and stood by her side with the tray in her hands, Joanna turned to look back at Liam to wake him up.
"Liam... Liam..." Joanna called the little boy with a soft voice, softly patting his little shoulder. "Wake up," she added. But Liam was still closing his eyes, refusing to respond to the call, which made Joanna frown.
She called to wake him up once again, but Liam still refused to cooperate. She held one of his cold hands, and when she released it, it slipped and fell on the bed.
He was not responsive, and if she let him sleep without taking the herbal extract that had been prepared for him, he would not open his eyes ever again.
At least, she had to try to make the herbal extract be consumed by him, making it enter his body and react in his internal organs. If until then he still refused to wake up, she would admit it to be the fate of this poor little boy.
With that thought, Joanna, who could feel her hands dampen because of the fearful possibility, decided to make Liam drink the herbal extract no matter what.
Turning to Lucy, she ordered her to take a spoon from the kitchen as she tried to feed the extract to Liam through the spoon. Not long after, Lucy came back to the room with a spoon and handed it over to her, to which Joanna thanked her.
With the spoon in her hand, Joanna scooped the liquid extract and brought it to Liam’s lips, which she pried open with her other hand by gently squeezing his jaw. But it was not as easy as Joanna’s thought, as the liquid extract instantly slipped out through the corner of Liam’s irresponsive mouth.
Joanna took a sigh before wiping Liam’s wet lips and jaw with the napkin that was prepared by Lucy in the tray.
It was the third time she tried to feed him the remedy, but it only ended up dampening the area around his mouth and the pillow underneath him.
"Liam, wake up, please. Come, drink this like you drank the ginger tea before," Joanna said to the sleeping Liam in an urgent tone.
Pondering for a moment as she found it impossible for the little boy to respond to what she said at the moment, and not wanting to waste time on something useless, Joanna lifted Liam from the bed and made him sit on her lap. She then positioned him to sit to the side, where one side of his body was close to her front body.
Lowering her left hand, she put Liam’s head down to lean on her left arm.
She then took the glass of herbal extract from the tray and took a sip from it. Placing the glass back on the tray, Joanna opened Liam’s mouth in the same way as before, which was gently squeezing his jaw with her free hand. She then lowered her head, pressing her lips on Liam’s cold lips, and transferred the extract in her mouth to Liam’s mouth.
Pulling away, she tried to make Liam swallow the herbal extract that she had transferred by closing his lips and adjusting the position of his head on her arm so he could swallow it. But her first attempt was a failure as the same amount of liquid that she had transferred slipped out from the corner of his lips.
She took the napkin and wiped away all the liquid that Liam refused to swallow.
Refusing to give up, she then took another sip of the herbal extract and repeated the previous conduct. When she closed his lips and adjusted the position of his head to prevent the liquid from slipping out again, Joanna muttered under her breath, "Come, Liam. Swallow it. Get healed, please." Anxiety and nervousness filled her voice.
However, the liquid that was not swallowed was again flowing out of Liam’s mouth.
After thinking for a while, Joanna repeated the same conduct. Nevertheless, this time she did not instantly pull her lips away from the little boy’s, as it was an effort to block the herbal extract that she had little by little transferred to his mouth from slipping out.
Joanna wanted to make sure all the herbal extract was swallowed by Liam. She was again adjusting his head on her arm to ease the liquid seeping into his throat, which she hoped would stimulate him to swallow it when he felt there was something in his throat, regardless of whether he was unconscious or subconscious.
And Joanna, who still had her lips on Liam’s, closed her eyes as a response of relief when she noticed Liam moved his throat as he gulped, swallowing the liquid.
Meanwhile, the action that had been taken by Joanna to save the little boy caused Lucy to open her eyes wide, as she was shocked at what was done by a noble lady like her young lady. She could just stand there, watching the shocking yet heart-touching scene in silence.
It was a totally uncommon case for noble women to be willing to care for poor and lowly children whose backgrounds were unclear, particularly having close physical contact.
And Lucy was not the only person who was shocked at the young lady’s conduct. A man in black attire, whose stature was tall and well-built with his dark brown hair tied to the back of his neck, watched unblinkingly at the scene in the room with his deep, green eyes.
