The General's Wife Wants to Leave -
Chapter 69: Settling on a decision
Chapter 69: Settling on a decision
With a piece of fabric in his hand that he obtained by tearing the hem of the maid’s skirt using his sword, Canillas ran deeper into the forest with a frantic beating heart. He really wished he was not late to find his wife.
He was not sure where to head if he did not pay attention to the trace she left behind from the point where she left the initial area where the wolves appeared.
When the trace was blurred as there were no trampled grasses and some other evidence that showed the presence of someone who had ruined the peacefulness of what seemed to be an untouched forest, he chose the flat and opened path compared to the path that was hurdled with bushes and plank roots as he learned that it was the type of road she tended to choose during his way of tracing her whereabouts.
However, the clues were not always there to be found, especially when he was faced with two identical flat paths. It made Canillas stop running and take a moment to observe his surroundings, standing with his hands on hips and his chest heaved up and down repeatedly as his breath raging heavily.
Before choosing the path, a sliver of thought came into his mind that she might not run as far as the point where he was standing. What if she hid somewhere behind him? He questioned himself in his mind when he felt that he had run too far.
When he was about to turn around to search for his wife, not continuing to run ahead, his gaze fell on the sight of a shining item resting on the ground among the grasses on the left path, about three steps away from where he was standing.
Taking a deep sigh of relief over the clue he found, he bent down and took the golden pocket watch, which no doubt belonged to his wife.
Without thinking any longer, he rushed to the left while observing his surroundings. He was not sure when he had to stop until he heard a faint noise. Taking an abrupt halt from running, he took step after step carefully while trying to suppress any sound that might be created. He focused his sense of hearing on one point behind a large tree.
She was there. A quiet sigh of relief came from his lips.
Nevertheless, he could not help but be upset, yet he felt astounded by how she ran so far away from the initial point, although he understood that she might lose her control due to the fright. At this rate, she was completely out of the range of Fabio and Luca. Anything could have happened to her.
Looking up at the sky that could not be seen due to the thick, dense forest canopy above him, he was relieved and grateful that the universe was still on his side this time.
Before he made his way to approach her hiding place, he went in the opposite direction, trampling grass and throwing breaking twigs on the ground as he tried to create confusing evidence of the presence of someone, making others think there was a possibility for her to run in the opposite direction of where she really was.
He did not forget to drop the piece of torn fabric that belonged to the maid, placing it visibly on the bushes that were lining the pathway. He hoped the Tres fell deeply into his trap.
But then, who ever thought that after what he had done to find and protect her, and when he felt that he could breathe again when he found her to be fine, standing leaning against the tree, he received such a mind-blowing kick between his legs? As if it were not enough, she even tried to stab a dagger at him.
However, he was not mad, as he knew that it was a reaction to defending and protecting herself. In contrast, he found such a meek-looking lady who tried desperately to defend herself, apart from her baseless defensive skills, amusing. Even proving her strength to be in stark contrast to her look made him overwhelmed yet amazed at the same time.
With that way of thinking, was he counted among others who found her to be alluring, as he considered everything about her, even her coldness and rudeness, to be attractive?
Canillas contemplated before strongly objecting, saying that he was not among those people. He was different from those people.
In his inner perspective, what he had done was normal conduct as a husband to his wife. He was just trying to tolerate her, to play his role as her husband, and to protect her, as it was his responsibility.
But how should he describe that kind of feeling if, at the present moment, he was mesmerized by a beautiful sight before him?
The woman who had twirled in his mind was standing there, in the middle of the meadow.
The light blue dress that she wore was like the color of the sky above her, providing a bewitching contrast to her long, black hair that danced along with the gentle breeze of the mountain.
The veil of the golden ray glimmered on the pale skin on her face, painting the true appearance that was not masked behind the facade of sickness.
He could finally see her appearance more clearly.
The appearance that was not enveloped under the dim light of the deep forest or behind the cover of rashes was his to behold. It was the true figure of the woman whom he had chosen to be his wife.
And at this moment, he could not deny but confess that she was not only intriguing but also an alluring woman.
Canillas just stood there, on the side of the meadow, watching the alluring woman who was standing a few steps away from him, among the lush wild flowers and grassland. Although she was out of his reach, he was somehow in bliss just to see her from afar in this very peaceful moment.
Suddenly, a pair of hazel eyes that he longed to see met his eyes.
The curtain of golden rays lay between them, making the cold gaze feel somehow warm.
Canillas smiled. And he kept the smile on his lips, even though she did not return it.
She turned away as if not wanting to see his smile any longer, choosing to resume picking up the herb that she finally found, which was a bunch of bright white and flattened clusters of flowers.
But it was fine, as he was now sure that he would not let go of her, no matter how much she rejected him.
He would bound her in the marriage with him no matter how much she would stab him with the dagger in her hand.
Canillas had settled his decision.
