The General's Wife Wants to Leave -
Chapter 110: Future plan
Chapter 110: Future plan
Following the direction of the shop that was pointed out by the woman before him, Canillas hummed. "Will you accompany me there, Joanna?" He asked before adding,
"It would be good if we could spend the afternoon together, not only drinking but also reading. But please make sure not to choose books with sad endings. Otherwise, people would think that I did something bad to my wife." Canillas let out a chuckle after saying what made the lady before him purse her lips and shoot him with a flicker of glare with her puffy eyes that she tried to hide beneath the shadow of her hat.
"Unfortunately, I can’t be a companion because that is a tea shop specifically for gentlemen. If Sir Canillas needs a companion to go there, I will ask Sir Sylvester to accompany Sir Canillas there," Joanna replied in a crisp tone.
She felt luck was on her side this time, as the shop that she randomly picked to shift the cunning man’s attention from her was a tea shop that was really specified for gentlemen in Barasca, especially those from upper-class society who wanted to spend their days with colleagues or without any companion.
"Then, show me a place that can be visited by a married couple because I am not interested in enjoying what Barasca offers with men," Canillas replied with a smile that made Joanna quickly drift her eyes away, back to the direction of the window.
"Look!" Joanna pointed in another direction outside the window. "The long queue in front of the bakery shop over there." Joanna attempted not only to shift stubborn eyes that never left her this time but also from the topic of the previous conversation that she knew very well where he would direct it.
"They try to get the fresh, warm, and soft bread that is made by the famous baker, Mr. Dinn. The customers have to queue as early as possible in the morning so that they can get a share of the delicious bread," Joanna chirped.
The bakery shop that Joanna pointed to was an old, small, and simple building where all the building material was sourced from wood, except for the brick tiles of the roof, which still looked sturdy despite the old age. The entrance could not be seen as there was a long queue of people who wanted to enjoy the bread.
"Do you want to eat that bread?" Joanna turned to look at the man who questioned her. "If you want it, let’s stop. Let me buy it for you."
Surprised at the sudden offer, Joanna blinked her puffy eyes as she tried to see the expression of the man before her clearly. She wanted to know if he was joking or serious at the moment, as it was getting hard for her to read his emotions since their encounter last night.
Meanwhile, Canillas, who still fixed his eyes on her bewildered countenance, let out a chuckle when he noticed a questioning expression drawn on her face.
"I am serious, Joanna. You said that the bread is delicious. If you want it, let me buy it for you." Canillas repeated what he said before, and a smile appeared on his face. "It also seems to be a shop that can be visited by a married couple. Then, let this husband buy the delicious bread for his wife," he added his words with a grin.
At the answer to her silent question, although it was still hard to decipher if he was really serious or not at the moment, Joanna could not help but feel her heart pound again in her chest. It was a simple offer, yet the indescribable feelings surged once again inside her.
However, before she was able to get rid of those feelings, a quick reaction came from Joanna when she saw the man who made her restless raise his hand as he was about to knock on the carriage’s top to signal the coachman to stop the carriage.
"No, Sir Canillas." Joanna waved her hands, preventing the General from doing what he wanted to do. "The queue is too long. I am also already full. We need to arrive at Mr. Simone’s shop soon so Mr. Simone can work on the suit as early as possible." Joanna used all the reasons to stop the General from knocking on the carriage’s top in a hurried speech, as she saw him still placing the back of his hand there.
"Then, let’s go there tomorrow morning," Canillas suggested, lowering his hand back to the previous position, clasping with his other hand, and having them rested on his right thigh as he sat with his one leg crossing over the other. "Let’s have breakfast with that bread," he added.
As he waited for the predicted response from the woman before him, whose bewildered expression could not escape his eyes, a faint smile cracked on his face when the response came from her.
"I am sorry, Sir Canillas. Personally, I have actually eaten enough of them. But if Sir Canillas wants to give it a try, I will ask a servant to buy it for you to try tomorrow morning," Joanna voiced her mind, turning down the offer of the General.
She actually sensed that the man, who was sitting in a calm and relaxed way across from her, was not teasing her with his offer. It was just her who could not accept anything from him. Hence, deep down in her heart, she expected him to not be serious with his offer to buy something for her.
Less she wanted was feeling like she had a debt, so when the time came for them to separate one day, there was nothing that would be used to emerge one’s kindness as a memory.
"Then, I will take you to Mrs. Lancey’s bakery shop in Orbane. That is the bread that you haven’t had before, so it is something that you haven’t had enough of. We will have that bread for our breakfast. I am sure you will like it as the queue is longer than that of Mr. Dinn," Canillas replied calmly, enjoying the change of demeanor from the lady before him.
Joanna was speechless at what was relayed by the General. Once again, he seemed to know what lay inside her heart and mind. It was like he revealed the future plan he had set with her, ignoring her intention to be away from him.
Anxiety once again emerged inside Joanna, as he looked so sure that he would return to Archess with her.
Not replying to the future plan he had for them, Joanna chose to stop distracting the piercing gaze that penetrated her entire being.
Nothing could distract this man from his goal. The topic she brought up to distract him only ended up becoming a topic that distracted her, making her unable to form a word because anxiety grew deeper inside her.
