Chapter 1563: Chapter 1563: Struggling Sister Xin (9)

"Oh no, my hair got messed up!" Erni quickly pulled Yang Ruxin’s hand away.

Outside, Du Juan and the others heard the commotion and immediately came in to assist the two with freshening up.

When the sisters stepped out of the room, they found that lunch was already being prepared in the kitchen.

"I’ll go help out in the kitchen," Erni said, leading Xiaoyun and Hong Ye to the kitchen, while Yang Ruxin went to greet her grandfather, her master, and Tang Wanqian in the back.

Ever since Dong Xun arrived, he had been hanging out with Dao Xuzi and Tang Wanqian, the two old men, and even moved to live next door.

At this moment, Dong Xun was assisting Dao Xuzi in grinding medicinal herbs.

When Dao Xuzi saw Yang Ruxin come over, he immediately tested her on the medical texts he had assigned her to memorize earlier. After confirming she had recited them completely, he brought out a clay figure, named the depths of acupuncture points, and had her practice. She nailed it without any mistakes.

The old man immediately beamed with satisfaction. "You’ve managed to learn in half a year what would normally take others three to five years, or even longer!"

Yang Ruxin smiled slightly. She wasn’t about to admit that she possessed a cheat-like talent, was she?

Dao Xuzi noticed that Yang Ruxin wasn’t particularly excited and didn’t make a big fuss about it either. This made him even more pleased – this girl was steady. Stability was what a doctor needed most. Excellent, he had certainly chosen the right person. Without hesitation, he tossed over another book, "Miscellaneous Medicine."

This book was specifically about rare and complex medical cases, with detailed examples. It recorded the various symptoms and pulse conditions of different individuals, then concluded with tailored prescriptions for each person.

Yang Ruxin sighed quietly. She didn’t need to ask to know—she’d have to memorize it entirely again. Although she felt bitter about it, she couldn’t complain. Why? Because the books she was being given became increasingly difficult. The initial "Collection of Hundred Herbs" was mostly filled with illustrations, making it simpler to memorize. But later on, the books contained fewer images and were packed with text—ancient text in traditional Chinese characters with prose-like classical Chinese. Though she had a bit of foundation, it was still exhausting.

Nevertheless, she knew that if she wanted to study medicine, she had to overcome such challenges. And so, she continued memorizing.

"I’ve got a book here, too. You can memorize it along with mine," Tang Wanqian remarked before throwing another book her way.

Yang Ruxin accepted it expressionlessly and glanced at the title. "Thousand Poisonous Insect Collection"? She raised her eyes to look at Tang Wanqian. Was he planning to teach her techniques related to poisonous insects? Though she knew nothing about them, she understood this book was similar to the beginner-level "Collection of Hundred Herbs" given to her by Doctor Wang.

"Keke said she doesn’t have the brains to learn it, so I’ll have you study it instead." Tang Wanqian shrugged. "She said that if you learn it, it’d be as if she learned it too... This is the most basic material for studying poison-insect techniques—you must remember it!"

Yang Ruxin’s lips quivered slightly. Fine, this sounded exactly like something that lazy girl would say. Anyway, the more skills she accumulated, the better. Who knew when they might come in handy?

Sigh, she hadn’t been a top scholar in her past life, but who would’ve thought she’d end up being one after coming to ancient times? By calculation, she was practically memorizing one book a month now.

What a tough life.

Seeing how studious Yang Ruxin was, even Dong Xun decided to join in on the action and started teaching her calligraphy after noticing how awful her brushwriting was.

"Grandpa, why don’t you teach Xiaofeng and the others?" Yang Ruxin suddenly had an idea. "I can learn along with them."

"That works," Dong Xun quickly nodded in agreement. After all, he had once passed the scholar’s exam, though he didn’t pursue further imperial examinations afterward. He loved practicing calligraphy and had stacks of calligraphy manuals. His handwriting was indeed pretty good.
