"Let’s give it a try," Yang Ruxin nodded slightly.
"This way, miss," the shop assistant hurried them into an adjoining room upon hearing this, not daring to neglect them, "Please sit." Then he went to another room and soon came out with a sheet of paper, "Please have a look, miss."
When taking the paper, Yang Ruxin didn’t know why she felt a bit nervous, and when she unfolded the paper, her heart inexplicably trembled, her hunch was right, the paper didn’t have any strange characters, but instead asked the same question in two different languages, "Where do you come from?"
The first language was English, followed by Japanese, then came a π with an equal sign after it, and surprisingly, there was also content from the periodic table of elements at the bottom.
"I won’t read it aloud; may I borrow some paper and a pen?" Yang Ruxin glanced at the shop assistant.
The shop assistant quickly provided the paper and pen.
Yang Ruxin answered the question in English, and as for Japanese, she understood and spoke a few words but couldn’t write it, so she just used modern Chinese characters to write that she didn’t know Japanese. For π, she simply replaced it with an approximately equal sign and wrote 3.14. Regarding the periodic table, the other party wrote hydrogen, helium, lithium, beryllium, and boron, so she responded with carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and neon. Truth be told, having left school so many years ago, she had almost forgotten all that chemistry knowledge; she only remembered the first four terms. If the person she was corresponding with had written something else, she might not have been able to answer correctly. After writing, she handed it to the shop assistant: "Show this to your boss."
Her guess wasn’t wrong; this really was a fellow time traveler.
However, this fellow traveler was really bold. Based on what was on the paper, someone could have said it was a spell and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration. She took it out so openly for others to see, unafraid of being considered an oddity by those with intentions?
The shop assistant, though puzzled why the guest didn’t read aloud, didn’t say more and took the paper to the next room. Soon enough, there was the sound of a stool scraping the floor—it seemed someone had stood up and moved the stool.
Gu Qingheng had been silent the whole time, but since Yang Ruxin hadn’t hidden the paper from him, he saw both its contents and what Yang Ruxin wrote. He couldn’t help but be astonished; he didn’t understand any of it, and he was sure that you couldn’t find another person in the whole country who would. Who exactly was his Xinxin?
The shop assistant returned shortly, his smile now even more respectful: "Miss, please come upstairs." She had passed the test.
"This is your room, miss," the shop assistant led them directly to the third floor, a part not usually open to the public, "Please come in."
"What about their rooms?" Yang Ruxin pointed towards Gu Qingheng.
"This gentleman’s room is right there," the shop assistant pointed to the next door, "As for the two young masters, their rooms are opposite."
"Thank you," Yang Ruxin expressed her gratitude, then entered her room—a large suite. Observing the antique decorations in the room and the sketches hanging on the wall, she couldn’t help but smile. The combination of ancient and modern elements seemed oddly harmonious yet eerie.
"How is it? Didn’t I draw well?" Just then, a voice came from the inner room, "It’s just a pity that there’s no running water here, no electricity... and no piano..."
