Chapter 978: Chapter 978: Who Would Be Interested in a Stone?

The Dharma Seal landed on Carson Flores, and all signs of life on his body suddenly disappeared.

He was a corpse, and he was also a stone.

In short, he was no longer a living person, devoid of any vital fluctuations.

The undead that had been ready to surge over and tear Carson into pieces suddenly halted, bewildered.

The ghostly flames flickering in their eyes, they twisted their heads around, searching left and right in confusion.

Where was their target?

How had it suddenly vanished?

Carson watched this scene and silently laughed to himself.

As expected!

Their targeting wasn’t about truly seeing their prey, after all, they didn’t even have eyes left.

Fluctuations!

Their method of targeting and locating prey was solely based on special fluctuations.

The life vibrations emanating from their bodies attracted them, like candles burning in the night, naturally drawing them in and prompting their attacks.

Now, the candle had been extinguished.

The cold, lifeless candle, offering no light, was hidden in the darkness. Even if it was right in front of them, it had essentially escaped their perception.

In their sense, Carson at that moment was just a stone.

Who would bother attacking a mere stone?

Amid an ocean made up of thousands of undead, Carson remained unattacked, as if an undisguised member of their ranks.

Carson heaved a sigh of relief, a tinge of retrospective fear surging in his heart.

He hadn’t expected to comprehend the Mark of Life and Death’s Death Imprint in such a situation. Otherwise, who knew what kind of battle it would have been, or if he would even be able to escape alive.

Carson dared not employ Spiritual Energy to take flight, knowing that if he did, the large fluctuations would make it hard to maintain his "stone" status.

If his opponent were Demonic Beasts, this state wouldn’t work as they could still see him. That was the reason why, back in Harmony Hollow, the eldest senior brother had instructed him to conceal himself well so the Demonic Beasts wouldn’t see him directly.

These undead, lacking eyes completely, sensed the vibrations of life. So, once he concealed his own, they could no longer perceive Carson. To them, he was indistinguishable from the surrounding rocks and mountains.

Considering he’d been sneak attacked by Liam Malone, Carson felt a complex mix of emotions, though he couldn’t exactly say he resented it, since he had intended to kill Malone himself.

He hadn’t expected Malone to be so bold as to assault him at such a time.

Perhaps, Malone thought Carson, surrounded by the undead, was sure to die.

Too bad for him, he had miscalculated.

Even without mastering the Death Imprint, with the Ground Shrinking Technique at his disposal, he could still break out, at most sustaining a few injuries—his bones were solid enough that a few bites wouldn’t kill him.

Now, without any reason to hesitate, he could rightfully make his move and slay him.

Carson looked around but faced some difficulty.

He was on a platform protruding from a cliffside—no connection to the heavens above, nor to the ground below. To leap into the air would require using Spiritual Energy, which would alert the undead.

Moreover, through the crevice above, he had already spotted the dense swarm of Demonic Beasts in the sky. If he burst out now, he’d surely be pursued and hunted down by the beasts. Among them were many Great Demons, and one misstep could spell the end.

Carson turned to look at the cliffside, and to his surprise, he discovered that the protruding platform also led to a cave.

The cave wasn’t tall, merely about two meters in height, but the exit faced the side of the cliff. If someone looked from the outside, it would be totally invisible, extremely well-hidden.

Carson glanced at the mass of undead outside, thought it over, and then turned and walked toward the cave entrance.

Inside the mountain belly, it should all be connected, right?

He might be able to use this path to find the others. Not to mention anything else, at least he could avoid the endless Sea of the Undead outside and the pervasive Demonic Beasts.

The undead made no response to Carson’s movement—who would take interest in a stone, even if this stone could move on its own...

The cave wound and twisted, heading deeper into the mountain’s belly.

Carson moved cautiously forward, the cave widening as he progressed, the air gradually filling with a subtle scent of blood.

His steps suddenly paused, his gaze landing on a huge skeletal frame on the ground ahead.

The skeleton was enormous, with its structure suggesting a height of at least twenty or thirty meters, complete with massive wings and teeth sharp as giant steel spikes.

Carson’s eyes settled on the creature’s giant wing, where he noticed one part of the wing bone was only half intact. Examining the clean cut, it was apparent it had been severed by a clean strike.

Who could be so formidable as to sever such a colossal wing with a single blow? Carson’s Three Provinces Sword couldn’t even kill the undead outside.

As Carson watched it, the skeleton suddenly stirred, turned its head, the ghostly flames in its empty eye sockets flickering as it glanced in Carson’s direction. It tilted its head slightly, as if puzzled by the movement.

A chill ran down Carson’s spine.

Dread!

He hadn’t expected the mountain’s belly to also harbor undead, and clearly, those inside were far more powerful than those in the Sea of the Undead outside!

The owner of this skeleton had been dead for who knew how many thousands of years, yet it still exuded a majestic and formidable air, evidence that it must have been a terrifying sovereign in life. Now, it had become an undead guard within this mountain.

An undead guard?
