Chapter 475: Chapter 475: The Undecayed Corpse_1
The most valuable items were likely to appear in those obviously higher-class large houses, but Carson Flores did not compete with the Howell Family.
For one, the Howell Family outnumbered him, and they were already hostile to him, so if a conflict really broke out, it would probably turn into a big fight, and secondly, this place was just a village, and in the center of this Underground City, there was a much larger town occupying a wide area.
Carson casually entered a nearby residence, looked through several households in succession, and found nothing of value.
He simply stopped checking the other residences and strolled along the central path of the village. After a while, he crossed the village and arrived at an open area at the edge of the village where there was a vast plain and a completely desiccated giant locust tree.
Standing on this plain, Carson looked around. He could vaguely imagine, before this field had perished, that perhaps a group of old men might have been chatting in the shade here, with frolicking children running around nearby...
Just as Carson was about to turn back, he suddenly froze, frowning and looking into the distance.
A few hundred meters ahead of the village, there was a mountain-like shadow, and on a protruding part of that mountain, there seemed to be a figure?
Hesitating for a moment, Carson continued to walk, and after three hundred meters he stopped. Before him was a mountain.
The mountain might have been tall originally, but now it was only about one hundred and fifty meters high. The part above one hundred and fifty meters seemed to be sheared off as if by a knife, and the cut section of the peak and the rock layers had merged together completely, making the mountain look more like a giant pillar holding up the heavens and the earth.
Carson leaped up and climbed up the slope towards the protruding plateau he had seen before. Soon, he leaped up again and landed on the platform he had previously seen, shining his powerful flashlight.
Under the light, there was a stone platform and a stone bench. On the bench sat a middle-aged man smiling at Carson!
Carson’s hand twitched involuntarily, almost dropping the flashlight.
Even with Carson’s courage, this horrifying scene had startled him.
Steadying his mind and taking a closer look, Carson slowly exhaled.
A dead man.
Jaiden Howell had mentioned that some bones were found in this area. Carson wouldn’t have been as surprised to see a skeleton, but the sight of a living person was all the more haunting.
Shifting the flashlight around, Carson’s feeling of shock became even more pronounced.
The protrusion should have been a huge rock, but now, this part of the rock was as smooth as if it were sliced horizontally and vertically to create an extremely flat stone platform.
On closer inspection, the stone stool on which the man was sitting, and the stone table in front of it where the chessboard lay, were all squarely shaped, each side smooth and flat, as if cut by a sharp blade.
The middle-aged man sitting on the stone looked to be in his forties, with handsome features, wearing a hemp robe similar to that of ancient times, very plain yet unable to obscure his scholarly and elegant demeanor.
He was smiling peacefully, looking at Carson, no, actually looking in the direction beyond Carson, which was where everyone had entered this realm.
Walking up to the middle-aged man, Carson felt an inexplicable peace settle in his heart.
After standing for a few seconds, Carson cupped his hands in salute and bowed slightly.
"Junior Carson Flores, entering this realm for the first time, disturbing the elder’s peace, please forgive me!"
Although he knew that the man before him was dead, the fact that the corpse was undecayed and his majestic bearing made it apparent that this man was no ordinary individual, so Carson simply followed his heart and apologized to the elder first.
One can never go wrong with being polite.
Just as Carson was bowing, it was as if the wind swept past him, causing his hair to dance about.
Carson was startled and quickly lifted his head, his eyes suddenly becoming fixed.
The middle-aged man’s body seemed to suddenly turn into a flat painting, and then this painting shattered into countless particulate specks of light, carried away by the wind.
The action wasn’t particularly fast, but it was incredibly fluid, and quickly, the smiling middle-aged man turned into countless points of light, scattering with the wind and completely dissipating into the atmosphere.
The stone table remained, the Go game still laid out, but the man who had been playing was no longer there.
"Ding!"
The crisp sound drew Carson’s attention. He turned his gaze awkwardly and fixed it on the chessboard.
Atop the black and white intersecting board, there was a shiny, gleaming ring.
Carson leaned in for a closer look. It was a golden-yellow ring with intricate, ancient patterns on one inner side. Other than that, there was nothing particularly striking about it.
Carson tentatively reached out and gently picked up the ring, examining it closely.
It seemed unremarkable.
He put the ring into his pocket, felt the outside, patted the pocket, hesitated for a moment, and then took the ring out again.
Comparing the size, Carson slipped the ring onto his ring finger.
