Chapter 147: Chapter 147: Do you want to link arms or something?_1
Accompany?
Carson Flores tilted his head, slightly surprised, "Social obligations?"
Shirley Miller pursed her lips, her expression a tad unnatural, "Sort of. He’s my college classmate from the west of the city, he’s running a business in Seashore. Seems like he’s here in Polgel to discuss some kind of partnership and has asked me out to dinner. I’m the local host, so it wouldn’t be nice to refuse."
Carson Flores nodded in realization and chuckled, "A suitor?"
Shirley Miller nodded, "That’s right. I told him I was already married, but he didn’t believe it. He even said that if I really was married, he’d invite both me and my husband to dinner. I don’t want him bothering me, so I want to completely dispel his thoughts."
Carson Flores laughed, "So this time I’m not playing the driver, but the husband, right?"
Shirley Miller looked a bit embarrassed. After bringing up the matter, she also realized that it was somewhat inappropriate to ask Carson Flores for this favor. After all, her nominal husband hadn’t benefited at all, yet he still had to play her husband without some sort of benefit to himself.
"Let it be... I can bring our marriage certificate, that should prove I’m married."
Carson Flores laughed, "He’s come chasing all the way to Polgel, seems like a die-hard admirer. Even if you show the marriage certificate, it probably won’t help. After all, people can divorce even after they’re married... Anyway, I’ve got nothing else going on, I’ll accompany you."
Shirley Miller gazed at Carson Flores’s hearty smile, her eyes slightly puzzled, "Aren’t you angry?"
Carson Flores was taken aback, "Why should I be angry?"
Shirley Miller answered frankly, "We’re a fake married couple, yet I still want you to protect me from the wind and rain. I haven’t given you any real benefits..."
Carson Flores chuckled amusedly, "I thought it was something serious. We have a certificate after all, and even if we aren’t a real couple, we could still be friends. Helping out is no big deal. Besides, I’m helping you now as a way to repay an old debt; you don’t have to feel embarrassed."
Owed a debt?
No wonder Carson Flores had always been so easy-going. Whatever she requested, he would comply, thinking of it as repaying a debt while interacting with her.
Shirley Miller’s mood grew subtly complex, as if everything was within expectations, yet she also felt a twinge of inexplicable disappointment.
"Alright then, I appreciate it," she said.
Carson Flores joked, "And I get to enjoy a nice meal out of it, pretty good."
Shirley Miller glanced at the T-shirt Carson Flores was wearing and thought for a moment, "We’ve got some time now, let’s go browse the mall."
Carson Flores instantly understood. If he was to appear as Shirley Miller’s husband, wearing a T-shirt that cost just a couple of dollars indeed seemed quite inappropriate. It might just attract another round of mockery.
"Sure, I’ll buy a few decent clothes to spruce up my facade," he said.
After breakfast, Shirley Miller and Carson Flores drove to the mall.
Once inside the mall, Carson Flores became a walking clothes rack, constantly trying on garments that Shirley Miller selected for him, eliciting subtle expressions from the sales associates.
Carson Flores had the look of a handsome scholar, but his outfit totaled less than a thousand dollars while Shirley Miller was decked out in designer labels with an air of elegance, obviously wealthy and beautiful.
A poor boy hitching his wagon to a rich beauty, scaling the pinnacle of life?
Could he be a gigolo kept by a wealthy woman?
After the shopping spree, Carson Flores had transformed from head to toe. Clothes make the man, and the newly attired Carson Flores seemed like a different person, turning from a poor boy into the young master of a prominent family, and his languid, casual demeanor added even more to his roguish charm.
So handsome!
Shirley Miller was dazzled, silently praising, "With that face and aura, truly the epitome of a male deity."
If it weren’t for all her troubles, Shirley Miller might have wanted to turn their fake marriage real.
As evening approached, Carson Flores drove Shirley Miller to the restaurant.
After getting out of the car, Carson Flores asked with a smile, "How about we link arms or something?"
Shirley Miller’s cheeks reddened a bit, "Okay!"
Carson Flores bantered, "Act natural, otherwise, our charade might be exposed."
Shirley Miller murmured an agreement, as if justifying her awkwardness, "I’ve never linked arms with anyone before; I lack experience."
Carson Flores said soothingly, "Take it as a lesson in etiquette between men and women. You see, at many award ceremonies, the female guests always link arms with the male guests."
Taking his advice, Shirley Miller felt her nerves ebb away, and her arm linked with Carson Flores’s much more smoothly and naturally.
Shirley Miller’s classmate Santino Vasquez had already arrived. Seeing Shirley Miller entering the restaurant arm-in-arm with Carson Flores, his handsome face instantly grew darker.
Shirley Miller said she was married, which Santino Vasquez didn’t believe.
He had been keeping tabs on Shirley Miller all along. Wasn’t she busy managing the Miller Group? All this time without even a boyfriend, how could she suddenly be married?
Perhaps Shirley Miller had purposely said that just to make him give up pursuing her.
As for this man who appeared out of the blue, Santino Vasquez leaned more toward the possibility that he was Shirley Miller’s friend, or simply an actor she’d hired purely to put on a show for him.
As Carson Flores and Shirley Miller approached, Santino Vasquez scrutinized them, his eyes filled with a hint of doubt.
This guy was very MAN, very handsome, clad in designer from head to toe, with a million-dollar Patek Philippe on his wrist. He exuded a relaxed and easy confidence characteristic of a wealthy young master, and he oddly matched Shirley Miller.
Suddenly, Santino Vasquez wasn’t so sure anymore.
Could it be that she really was married?
