Chapter 1403: Chapter 1403: The Lamb’s Struggle

Spencer Steele had hidden himself for half a day.

She guessed that the pursuer must have left by now, and that was when she struggled to crawl out of the mud pit.

But just as she emerged, she was stunned.

Sitting cross-legged on a rock not far ahead was a youth, who was quietly watching her.

He was clearly there, yet she couldn’t sense his presence at all, as if he was just a rock, devoid of any signs of life.

Spencer’s hair stood on end. Had she been discovered all along?

But if he had discovered her, why didn’t he just pull her out directly?

Was this like a cat playing with a caught mouse?

No, that’s not right!

The youth in front of her wasn’t among the previous pursuers. In his eyes, there was sympathy and appreciation, but no malice.

Who was he?

As soon as Spencer prepared to ask, the youth spoke, "You are very vigilant, but you lack patience. Had you stayed in this small mud pit for three, or even five days, you might have truly had a chance to escape from their pursuit. But now, you have been discovered."

Discovered?

Before Spencer had time to speak, a loud laugh came from the sky: "Haha, the little mouse can’t hide anymore, I’ve caught you!"

Spencer looked up to see a Golden Light approaching from afar, arriving in an instant, breaking through the canopy and hovering midair.

The white-haired elder, looking at Spencer smeared with mud, chuckled, "Kiddo, hand over the map, and I’ll spare your life—I keep my word."

Spencer wiped the mud off her face with a hand, instinctively turning her head to look at the rock, only to find that the youth who had been there was mysteriously gone.

A sense of inexplicable loss surged in Spencer’s heart. She intuitively felt that the youth was not associated with those pursuers, and that he was probably more formidable than them.

She gritted her teeth and said coldly, "Do you think I would trust you?"

The white-haired elder smiled, "My girl, do you still have the right to bargain? If you don’t give it up, you will definitely die. If you hand it over, you might not die. Why not try it?"

Spencer spread her hands: "The map isn’t on me."

The white-haired elder narrowed his eyes slightly: "Then where is it?"

Spencer spoke solemnly: "In a place only my grandfather and I know of, and now that my grandfather is dead, only I know of it..."

The white-haired elder suddenly laughed, "You know? Then that’s all we need. My little lady, perhaps you don’t know that in this world there’s a spell called the Soul Searching Technique. It can search your memories directly. Of course, it’s very painful, like stirring your brain with a stick. Once the search is finished, I’ll know where you’ve hidden it. As for you, you’ll probably turn into an idiot, or die painfully..."

Spencer turned pale. Intelligent as she was, struggling to remain calm, struggling to find a chance to live, she was, after all, just a sixteen-year-old girl.

Spencer bit her lip as a parchment map suddenly appeared in her hands.

The white-haired elder’s eyes lit up, reaching out for it, but his hand suddenly stiffened.

The moment the parchment appeared, Spencer clapped her hands together and rubbed it vigorously, turning the parchment into countless pieces of dust that fell to the ground.

The white-haired elder’s face darkened instantly: "You little wretch, refusing the toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit. It seems I must let you experience the severity of the Soul Search Technique."

Spencer clenched her fists. In front of these wolf-like pursuers, she was like a little sheep, without any means of attack. Her only strategy was to find a way to keep them from killing her for now.

"I do remember the content of that map, but even the Soul Searching Technique can’t possibly know all of my memories, right? What if it fails to find out?"

The white-haired elder’s brow furrowed instantly.

Indeed, the Soul Searching Technique was not omnipotent. After all, human memory is boundless, and the technique can’t possibly clarify every memory, only able to reveal some of the most important and deep-seated memories, and even then not wholly.

Using the Soul Searching Technique to extract memories of the map from Spencer was highly likely, since Spencer would certainly have taken great care to memorize it, but what if it failed?

"You little clever girl, what do you propose?"

Spencer felt sweat in her palms, trying hard to calm her nerves, and said solemnly, "I just want to live."

The white-haired elder stared at Spencer’s muddy little face, at those obstinate and calm eyes, and suddenly chuckled coldly, "All of your family is dead, and yet you can negotiate with me without batting an eyelid. You are a tough one, and I’ve heard you’re a Sword Spirit Body. With your character, if you were to grow up, you’d be a threat to us all."

"I’m not keen on leaving trouble for later. Besides, once those other guys come, it will be even more troublesome. Killing you and enjoying the loot alone, even if it amounts to nothing in the end, I won’t be at a loss!"

The white-haired elder stretched out his hand, reaching towards Spencer: "Little girl, blame your bad luck!"
