Chapter 730: Chapter 734: Fairy Tale Town (23)
Suddenly, Su Li sniffed the air as she caught a whiff of a salty, damp sea scent.
Somewhat fragrant, yet with a faint, almost imperceptible stench of fishiness.
It reminded her of the time she had encountered the Carp Spirit.
Although there were major differences, the feeling was still strikingly similar.
Su Li glanced towards the beautiful girl beside the Prince, and unexpectedly, their eyes met.
In an instant, she thought she saw a layer of red aura of malevolence flicker across the girl’s eyes—then it was gone, disappearing so quickly it seemed like an illusion.
All that remained was the girl’s pleasant, smiling expression.
She politely offered Su Li a slight smile, revealing two even more adorable, sharp little fangs.
Turning her head, she asked Cinderella again, tilting her head to the side, "What did you say you saw?"
Before Cinderella could answer, the Prince impatiently glared at her and said, "What could she have seen, spending her days mingling with servants, not even capable of fulfilling the most basic duties of a Princess...."
"If it were you..."
"Don’t be like that. I am not your Princess, and you shouldn’t speak to me in such a way."
"But you saved my life, and my father would understand. You’ll soon be able to become a Princess, my Princess."
The two flirted as if no one else was present, which made Cinderella feel awkward and humiliated.
The tavern owner’s face turned as black as the bottom of a pot.
No one would have guessed that the Prince, who seemed so tender and perfect, could actually be so despicable behind closed doors.
To this, Cinderella felt sad, yet there was a vague sense of relief and anticipation.
It was as if she was eager to leave this place.
Although the tavern owner was dissatisfied with her former stepdaughter, seeing the Prince’s abhorrent behavior, she became extremely angry.
She immediately spoke up, "Since the Prince is so dissatisfied with my daughter, then I will take her away today. Let the position of Princess be given to the young lady beside you."
The Prince cast an indifferent glance at Cinderella, but was frightened by her ghostly appearance at that moment and quickly turned his head away.
He waved his hand dismissively, just about to agree.
However, he overheard the beauty beside him interject, "This doesn’t seem right. What would people think, they might believe I drove the Princess away."
"This is not good, besides, I never agreed to be your Princess."
The Prince also became troubled. He was reminded by the Princess that public opinion is to be feared.
He conveniently ignored the latter part of the Princess’s words.
"In that case, you may as well stay in the Imperial Palace. After all, it’s not like we can’t afford to feed another mouth."
Originally, he was truly captivated by Cinderella’s grace at the ball, but part of it was also due to public pressure.
He could not let his people think that their Prince was a man who did not keep his promises.
It was agreed that whoever could wear the Crystal Shoes would become the Princess.
But after just a few days together, he felt that the Princess was a better fit for him.
Especially since she was the Princess who had saved his life.
Particularly, he could not comprehend how the once fairly beautiful face of the Princess had suddenly become so repulsive.
The change was too harsh.
He even began to suspect whether magic had been cast upon the Princess to make her so attractive.
Ah, he was actually right about one thing.
There was indeed magic on Cinderella.
The matter was thus settled, Cinderella was both shocked and angry, but she dared not retort.
The girl at the Prince’s side spoke again, "It has been no small effort for the Princess’ family to come to the Imperial Palace, why not let them stay here with the Princess for a while?"
The Prince gave a noncommittal response, then left with his Princess.
Turning her head, the Princess gave Su Li and the others a grin, revealing a row of snow-white teeth that glinted with a chilling light.
What a set of teeth, both white and sharp.
Su Li also grinned in amusement.
Interesting, it seemed she had become the selected prey.
Cinderella was trembling from the girl’s seemingly harmless smile, even her voice carrying a tremble.
"Just... just..."
The innkeeper also felt out of place in this scene; seeing Cinderella only half express herself, she asked impatiently, "Just what the hell are you trying to say? Spit it out..."
"It’s her, I saw her eating humans."
----------
Su Li and the others were arranged to stay in the guest room of the Princess’ chamber.
The Prince, after the few days of his recent marriage, had rarely set foot here ever again.
So, it wasn’t inconvenient for Su Li and her company to stay here.
But, after all, it was the Princess’ dwelling place; there seemed to be far too few servants.
Even their home conditions weren’t this lacking.
Back when her stepmother was in charge, there were always four servants, three old women, a gardener, and a coachman at home... These were the long-term staff, not to mention the occasional workers who would help during parties, holidays, and festivities.
But now, in Cinderella’s living area, Su Li only saw one young maid and one old woman in a robe.
She never saw anyone else.
The already vast place hardly felt livelier with the addition of Su Li and the innkeeper.
Moreover, with two more people, the staff was obviously insufficient.
They had to attend to many things themselves.
The innkeeper’s expressionless face grew even more severe.
However, she hadn’t relaxed her expression since the first time she saw this stepdaughter.
Cinderella actually wanted to order Su Li to do some chores, as in her mind, this person was just a hired hand from her family.
But she was immediately stopped by her former stepmother.
"Miss Su is my honored guest, how could I let her do work?"
"We haven’t had our dinner yet; why don’t you go to the kitchen and bring us something to eat?"
Cinderella’s mouth fell agape, unable to believe that these words came from her former stepmother.
Ever since her stepmother had entered her life, although she was indifferent towards her, she had never made her do any work.
But now, she would rather have her do chores than tire out a servant; was this revenge on her, or rather revenge?
"Why are you still standing there, go on! If you don’t, I’m leaving right now. After all, your father only asked me to check on you, he didn’t require me to stay here."
The innkeeper’s words gripped Cinderella’s heart like a vise. Startled, she quickly stood up, pouting and imploringly said, "I’m going now, please don’t leave..."
The innkeeper watched Cinderella’s hurried departure with a thoughtful gaze, pondering something.
It seemed that this perceptive woman had also noticed something amiss, otherwise, she wouldn’t have agreed to stay here for a while.
But it appeared that even if they wished to leave immediately, someone, or rather something, would not allow it...
