Chapter 481: Chapter 485: Rebirth in the Apocalypse (22)
Qi ersheng woke up from his stupor, his head pounding, and the last scene he witnessed before losing consciousness suddenly emerged in his mind.
He frantically reached for his neck, widened his eyes, and looked around, his spirit stretched to its utmost limit.
That’s when he realized he was in an unfamiliar environment.
All around him were transparent glass walls, through which he could see people walking around outside.
Those people were clad in thick, white biochemical suits, just like in a...
"laboratory" - the word popped into his mind.
Qi ersheng had never seen a real laboratory, but from the descriptions in movies and novels, and his general understanding, he deduced he was indeed in a laboratory.
Having been abducted by unconventional means, he thought it definitely wasn’t for anything good.
His first thought was that something unusual about him had been exposed.
Other than being reborn, the trading system he had acquired by accident was his deepest secret.
He wasn’t any great figure with significant energy—being reborn only meant he knew the general direction of major events for the next few decades, which couldn’t significantly influence any organization’s decisions. Even if people knew he was reborn, it was unlikely that many would expend substantial resources to study him.
So, the most likely suspicion was that the trading system had been exposed.
Only those who truly experienced this "Golden Finger" knew the immense profits and value it contained.
This was the outcome Qi ersheng least wanted to encounter.
Glass surrounded him on all sides, as if a container lid had trapped him inside.
He could see the movements of people outside, their mouths opening and closing, apparently conversing or discussing, yet everything was as silent as watching a mute film; not a sound could be heard.
It seemed as if overnight, he had become deaf, unable to hear any noise.
The people outside soon noticed that he had awakened.
Two of them, holding recorders, stood in front of Qi ersheng through the glass, their eyes scanning him up and down, then documenting something on their devices.
Just one glance brought a massive wave of humiliation surging from his heart, spreading rapidly throughout his body.
Qi ersheng felt a chill throughout his body; the unfeeling gaze of the others, as if assessing an inanimate object rather than a living, emotional human, was chilling.
Fear and fury compelled Qi ersheng to lose his composure. He aggressively hit the glass and shouted, "Let me out! What you’re doing is illegal, I’ll sue you...."
Qi ersheng didn’t know that all his behavioral patterns and emotional responses were being faithfully recorded by the instruments, and since his awakening, the footage was being transmitted wirelessly and observed by someone at the other end.
Negotiation experts were promptly dispatched.
Yet it seemed Qi ersheng clenched his teeth and refused to speak a word, adamantly denying he possessed the Golden Finger.
He was convinced that, apart from himself, no one could see the trading system, let alone use it. As long as he firmly denied it, these people had no way to handle him.
In his past life, Qi ersheng had been a successful businessman, but in this life, his empire had yet to begin before it was prematurely shattered, so his vision and mindset hadn’t reached a certain level.
Naturally, he still harbored some illusions.
He should understand that when it comes to national interests and the welfare of the people, no one cares about your civil rights.
Spending time reasoning with you, conducting political and ideological work, it’s great if it’s successful, but it’s also fine if it isn’t.
There’s a different plan for scenarios where reasoning fails.
The people of Hua Country always liked to start with courtesy before enforcing the law; if respectful offers were not accepted, then enforceable penalties would follow.
Qi Ersheng had been under investigation for all of his uncharacteristic actions since his rebirth up until now, and the documents were laid out before him.
It was only then that he began to take them seriously.
His eyes wide with anticipation, Qi Ersheng hastily skimmed the stack of documents and realized he had long been exposed; otherwise, the details of the investigation wouldn’t be so extensive.
Everything took time.
He couldn’t figure out at which detail he had slipped up, but the only thing he could think of was that it must have been someone very close to him who had betrayed him.
Qi Ersheng’s face darkened, and in a fury, he tore the documents into shreds.
He quickly searched his mind for every little detail.
Soon, he had a suspect in mind from among those close to him, though he felt this person was the least likely.
Su Li... the wife who had loved him in his past life.
Under the impression of ingrained beliefs, he had overlooked many of her unusual behaviors.
Days later, through the glass, he saw a familiar face which confirmed his suspicions.
Su Li was following behind her cheap cousin, standing out among a group of people in green military uniforms.
Qi Ersheng erupted like a madman. Before he could stand up, the negotiation expert in the same room quickly exited, and a current appeared out of thin air from the ceiling, paralyzing him entirely, forcing him to collapse in his spot.
The organization was well-prepared for the unknown defenses on his body.
Smiling radiantly, Su Li approached and, seeing Qi Ersheng’s disheveled appearance, could hardly contain her joy, not the slightest bit worried that her true intentions were now known, which might cause her significant hatred from him.
Indeed, Qi Ersheng now hated Su Li to death.
He thought the guilt and regret he had carried for his wife from his past life since his rebirth were a joke.
He paid the price for his pride.
He couldn’t understand why Su Li, who loved him deeply, would do such a thing. How could she bear it?
"Why?" Qi Ersheng lay on the ground, silently questioning with deep-seated hatred.
Su Li’s smile remained unchanged as she turned to her cheap cousin and asked, "Can I try to persuade him a bit?"
Among the military officers present, it was clear that Su Shaoqing was the leader.
He pondered for a moment and consulted with the others before deciding to allow Su Li to communicate with Qi Ersheng once more before implementing plan B.
Only after ensuring that Qi Ersheng had completely lost the ability to move did Su Shaoqing feel safe to let Su Li enter the isolation room.
Su Li said, "You should just hand over the items to the country; it’s better for everyone."
With a look of ’I’m doing this for your own good’ and barely concealed schadenfreude in her eyes, she irritated him even further.
If it weren’t for the fact that Qi Ersheng was still entirely paralyzed and unable to move, he would have really liked to rush up to her, grab her by the neck, and demand, "Do you have no heart? Haven’t I treated you well enough? Why would you betray me?"
Seeing Qi Ersheng stubbornly unresponsive, Su Li frowned deeply, grieving and agonized, "Why are you so unkind, lacking a sense of the bigger picture? The organization can benefit more people with that item than you keeping it for yourself."
"You, shut up...." Qi Ersheng rasped weakly.
Su Li shook her head in disapproval. "How have you become so unreasonable...."
"I’m only thinking of your best interests."
With an appearance of ’you don’t appreciate the good people,’ Su Li cruelly plunged another dagger deep into Qi Ersheng’s heart.
